Report, edit, etc...Posted by killer_garfield on 2005-12-02 at 02:57:35
When you build a melee map, look at these tips:
-Don't place resources or doodads straight near each other
-Use doodads
-Balance players resources
-Not more then 10 mineral fields and 1 vespene geyser in start area
-Not more then 14 mineral fields and 1 vespene geyser in expand area's
-Balance players terrain
-Be creative and make a original map
-Don't place two players too close to each other
-Equalize player distances
-Don't make expand area's too close to the start location or other expand
-Do not use more then 1 critter type, and that critter type must match the tileset
-Make at least 1 expand area/player
-The players must have exact the same terrain area
-Give your map a matching name
-Give your map a description
-Don't place units/doodads on illegal places. Use staredit to prevent that.
-Don't steal any ideas

I put them here because much melee map makers are having problems creating a nice map.

Why don't you think about the tips you give and make sure they are correct before you post them?
QUOTE
-Don't place resources or doodads straight near each other
Not great advice, because you can if you want that to be a diff syle, but on some maps I would agree.

QUOTE

-Give your map a matching name
-Give your map a description
= Make map look nice and attractive.
You don't have to give it a "matching" name... Just a good one.

QUOTE
-Not more then 14 mineral fields and 1 vespene geyser in expand area's
14 is too much unless its a special case, and some times you can use 2 gas in a special case.

QUOTE
-Don't place two players too close to each other
You mean if there is a straight path to eachothers base. But if there are cliffs and stuff and a long path around its not as bad.

QUOTE
-Don't make expand area's too close to the start location or other expand
Why?

QUOTE
-Do not use more then 1 critter type, and that critter type must match the tileset
Bad advice.
QUOTE
-Don't place units/doodads on illegal places. Use staredit to prevent that.
Why would you?

Alot of the things you say are quite... Stupid. Much of it depends on different circumstances, and people try and come up with new concepts so alot of your advice goes against that.

Also, you don't need to post this because we have one thats more in-depth and about 60 times better than yours.
Good attempt though.

[sub]Get out of my domain naab.

But seriously, most of that stuff is obvious. You say 'much melee mapmakers' are having trouble making maps, well, if your such a gosu melee maker, why not give some advice that might be helpful. Like tips on balancing on all Race vs Race scenarios possible. Thats something that might be used..[/sub]

The guy meant well, he just didn't give great advice, lol. Might wanna wait until you get a bit more experience here before you start posting topics about how to do stuff.

Meh we all were at a time, I still am sort of. BTW I've always wondered how you could even call someone a "noob" in an argument without sounding like a nerd.. It's like YEAH I'M BETTER THAN YOU AT STARCRAFT NOOB! hehe.

yea, you can give tips, at the expense of you being yelled at/mocked/maimed/raped verbally.

Usually verbally blink.gif

They're good tips but...kinda basic. Even I knew that, and I don't make melee maps.,

Some of them aren't even correct.. In extreme cases you can have two geysers in an expo. Also critters don't have to be matching tileset. How exactly do you make a map name fitting? Make a badlands map named 'Dirt'? Or maybe a desert map named 'Sand'. I think there was more, but I'm tired so yeah. G'Night.

Mate, if you enter a good name for a desert map on a space map, that just won't work out, it must match.. Or else it would be... BAH!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yenku on 2005-12-31 at 23:29:08
Not really... I think many maps have names that don't agree with the the style and it works out fine..
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Valug on 2006-01-02 at 01:12:00
[sub]Like my 'The Walrus' map? Or how about 2112, that name really fitted with my map. But according to this list, those two maps are bad, because the name does not fit with the map.

Man, I must be an idiot, I always though noname's maps were incredible, but he uses the weirdest names, I guess those maps all sucked.[/sub]
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Falcon_A on 2006-01-02 at 15:04:35
oh yeah you don't get it, those maps are total garbage because their titles don't match the map.

valug, he's far superior to all other melee map makers because he named his desert map "dunes of korhal" (actually, it WAS a name i was considering but i fark up too much with desert terrian pinch.gif ). the maps quality is good as long as it has ~ 14 minerals for each expansion and the name matches.

dots.gif

wink.gif the advice here is...subpar. that's all im gonna say.

can't flame someone for trying. well, i could, but it takes too long...i'll just say that those 8 player space maps that maybe should be in pro (i never actually played on them, but they look insane) with the wierd names, i'm sure they suck because of their titles. i would get a link but i'm too lazy tongue.gif

Map names in relation to gameplay are completely irrelevant. If Lost Temple was called "Best map in the universe" it would still be an unbalanced piece of shiz <- thank you censors...

If you need an extensive guide on how to make a melee map, then you shouldn't be making one... End of story.
