Staredit Network -> Lite Discussion -> Space Age Near...

NASA says were near the space age. Last developements I looked at they have an vehicle that can fly with no wings. Amazing. I bet you guys are all nerds here so I had to say about this , you know I know your all interestest in it.
Hey guess what? You know those STARWARS Tie Fighter the Lucas said they were accelerated? It was Ion... well thats what they use it in your local galaxy explorers.

I dont believe this.

If we are so near, then where is the confirmation speech that NASA will begin building their first "spaceship" (apart from shuttles) that can support up to 50 people. We don't even have the technology to build massive aircrafts (the size of BC's) to carry hundreds of personell.

Im my opinion, we are very far from the Space age.

[center]Haven't we been in the 'space age' since the '60s?
We've already got space tourism, commercial spave flights, and the Chinese now have rockets that spin real fast, whistle, turn green and fly into outerspace. I'd sure call that the 'space age'.

If it was the Space age, then arent there any cities in space?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Shapechanger on 2005-12-07 at 08:06:39
We've had Ion Drives for ten years now.
Anyhoo, that'd be the 'Colonization Era', this is the 'Space Age'. See the difference?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Cayden on 2005-12-07 at 08:19:18
hmm not really.

I would then think of it as the Space Era instead of age. If we can send shuttles into space, probes, drones, then thats fantastic. Our satellites are doing fine orbitting Earth, providing us with the weather pattern and intel for military operations.

Then if so, we have been in the Space "Era" for ages.

No wings? u mean a hover car? AWESOME w00t.gif im only 14, wonder wat will happen in 10 years, next gen!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by ... on 2005-12-07 at 15:14:51
They did invent a hover car.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kashmir on 2005-12-07 at 16:14:21
nuclear is right, the space age is an age when you finally arrive in outer space. The colonization era is when we start colonizing in space...

NASA says that the Space Age started in 1957 with Sputnik 1. You must've misunderstood it for the "Space Colonization Age".
We've had vehicles that can fly with no wings since the 1920's. Robert Goddard's rockects were similar in the overall structure to conventional rockets.
Ion engines have been around since 2001, Deep Space One was the first probe to use Ion engines. Afterwards, there have been a few (about 5) more space missions that use Ion egnines.

Also, they are making the Space elevator, an elevator that goes to space. Making that thing would cost so much to build and to maintain.

They're right. THIS is the Space Age. Imagine living in the 60s and being worried about the Soviets. The Space Age was really just a d*** wagging contest between the two countries (US and USSR). That's why so much money was poured into it. There's a lot of money to be made in war.

That was a turning point for me in life. When I realized most of our space knowledge and exploration wasn't because of genuine interest, but to get an edge over the Soviets. My poor little innocent mind was crushed.

Until space plays a major role in a war, don't expect to see ANY great advancement in that field. No country wants to spend that much money just to give a bunch of nerds some boners.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Sie_Sayoka on 2005-12-07 at 21:19:41
yeah we are VERY far from the space age.
NASA comes up with all these money costing ideas but they dont actually start building it. probolly the only reason we would go into space is to advance in war technology with defensive laser grids and that stuff.

but really... you look at our space vehicles, stations, etc. they are very unstable and vulnerable. we really need to rethink our means of getting to and from space and our transports.

people might consider the commericial space travel and deep space explorers advancements in space travel. i think of it as a waste of money. the technology hasnt really changed in 40 years.

PS. by the rate that we are sending sattelite into the orbit we will most likely keep ourselves earthbound by all the debre.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Freedawk on 2005-12-07 at 22:07:07
If it is the Space Age, wouldn't there be a breifing base on Mars by now? They would have the technology to do it if we are in the Space Age.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Do-0dan on 2005-12-07 at 22:08:54
i think we do have the tech, its just the resources that we dont have
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Freedawk on 2005-12-07 at 22:11:52
So...which type of resources do we not have yet? And I don't think President Bush would help out with the Mars Project more than the President of NASA would...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Do-0dan on 2005-12-07 at 22:13:58
energy source to fuel the engines and metals to make bigger shuttles
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Freedawk on 2005-12-07 at 23:22:51
I bet they can get that much resources in about...20-30 years...If they work hard on it and the americans also contribute to it...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Doodan on 2005-12-07 at 23:38:18
Which they won't. Like I said before. So many many many of the technological advances in the world were not created because of curiosity and wonder, but because of war. If space becomes valuable in a war someday (which it isn't currently) then I guarantee there will be great advances in that area. The current time period was named the "Space Age" by people from the 60s because most people back then believed that space travel was in the very near future. If only you could bring a person from the 60s to the present... That sounds like a groovy movie idea...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Do-0dan on 2005-12-07 at 23:42:11
i think we reached a point in time where wars aren't needed to further advance our technology
we could just do it out of curiosity and for the sake of science now ^.^
*gets shot*

I think you misunderstood just what satellites can do. Satellites can pick you up, in your bathroom right now. That's scary isnt it? Thats pretty valuable in war. Specially when your provided with enemy territory information. Plus, space can take people faster than airplanes, cars, and ships. NASA is supposed to be researching aerial vehicles and rockets. Theres only non-noticable changes in space instruments and you won't be able to know them unless your a complete geek and read all of those articles in wikipedia. "Search: Spaceships"

Please note, we are entering it not in it. US almost found out a way to make artificial oxygen over the years, and Europe, Asia has rocket technology now too. For europe, it's all of them. EU, and then for Asia it goes for China for the Rocketry and Spaceships.

Many other countries will soon have those if they get enough funds to be spent up.

The U.S. government has something like Cloaked Blimp, and stuff...

the blimp isnt actually cloaked, it has camaras on the top and screens on the bottom, and does like a play of whats up there on the downside, which makes it look like nothings there.

They can see through roofs?!?!?!

Unless I'm mistaken, we entered the space age in the 60's when we sent man into space.

Monkeys entered the space age before humans by that definition... blink.gif

I just can't see a moon base anytime soon.
Unless google manages to pull this off. tongue.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Lithium on 2005-12-08 at 05:34:59
For the moon base, they would need that chemi-reac oxygen production to make it, or else they would need to make permanent round trips to bring fresh oxygen and food supply, especially oxygen that would be problematic.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Cayden on 2005-12-08 at 08:22:17
How would the get gravity on the moon if you were to colonize there.
