Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2005-12-08 at 01:38:40
Here to ask your advice:

I'm currently stuck with this lump of black plastic for a computer:

Intel Pentium 4 1.39 GhZ
256 MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX (64 MB)

..and who knows what else.

I need a new computer. The thing is, the most I have is $500, so I need to be able to talk my parents into getting it for me for christmas.

My dad hates Windows and computer games and thinks that my computer is only crap because of magically hidden stuff using resources. He also thinks that a "perfectly good" computer would be like the $199 Dell cover desktop.

My mom sympathises with me and can try to talk my dad into getting a computer.

ANYHOW, I'm into getting a computer on a budget, preferrably under $2500. However, I also want the computer to last me and be able to play top-of-the line games fairly well until I got to college in 3 1/2 years. I'm currently looking at this:

I got an $800 E-Machine from Best-Buy, a $300 dollar video card, and off we go!
Half-Life 2 on max graphics. happy.gif

Eww E-Machine. My last computer was a E-machine tower. That peice of crap couldn't run starcraft reliably.

Thankfully, now I have an Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop. Widescreen movies baby. This thing costs $1500 but I got it half off through a deal with Dell. The deal was next 1000 people to buy certain laptops got it half off. Shweeet!

My dad hates Windows and computer games and thinks that my computer is only crap because of magically hidden stuff using resources.  He also thinks that a "perfectly good" computer would be like the $199 Dell cover desktop.

He could be right. But, I'm assuming you're like me and you've spent hours removing tons of spyware and tweaking everything left and right to make your computer run better. I'd say my computer could give another computer with better hardware that's been infested with Windows and spyware a good run for its money. A Dell is a pretty good computer, I've had my Dell for over 4 years (got it on Halloween, so maybe its protected against evil tongue.gif). Either way, I haven't had anything break or anything, and what I paid $800 for back then is probably the $199 cover desktop.

Processor - Between you and me, I don't know what a "512 MB Lv. 1 transfer" means. I'd investigate and research these.

Windows XP Home - Remember all that magically hidden stuff your dad talks about? You'll get tons of it here.

Warranty - Take the one year warranty if you can afford it. You don't want anything to break and be stuck with the bill.

Video Card - Ah, yes, the wonderful video. Personally, I'm getting along fine with my 32 MB video card. But, since you say you want to play the "high-end" games, you might want a little more. If you're willing to sacrifice here, you can probably save some money by getting a lower end card. I would consider one of these:
256MB PCI-Express x16 ATI RADEON™ X1800 XL - May delay your order [-$175]
256MB PCI-Express x16 NVIDIA® GeForce™ 7800 GT [-$172]
256MB PCI-Express x16 NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6800 GT [-$220]

RAM - RAM is fun. I would get at least 1GB these days, Windows XP and other high end programs can eat up a lot of RAM if you don't manage it well (I'm fine on 256 tongue.gif). The only thing I don't like is they don't offer a single 1 GB piece or anything, just a mass of 512s or GBs.

DVD Drives - Do you have a DVD player? Do you USE your DVD player? Would you rather a DVD player be on your computer? Do you plan on burning DVDs? Only you can answer these questions. tongue.gif

256MB PCI-Express x16 NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6800 GT [-$220]

I have that one with my 512 MB RAM, 3.2 GHz (Pentium IV) works great.
80 GB hard drive space. DVD-RW drive and CR-RW drive. Flat panel monitor.
Surround sound system with a sub.

I paid $1500 for my comp. What more can I want?

Hold on, when I ordered my computer I wanted 512 MB, but on my comp it says 1 GB, what should I trust?

Anyway my baby works like a charm.

My laptop with these features cost just under 1500.

Overview:
Laptop, Grey. Sentia Model
3 USB Ports. One of which is hidden
DVD/CD-RW Drive
Touch pad (mouse)
Windows XP
1GB RAM (Two modules of 512)
40 GB HardDrive
1 PC Card Slot.
Cable and Phone line jacks.
Extra monitor port (For dual)

Minor problem with the fan, you gotta kick start it with a toothpick or other slim object to get it running some of the time. Overheats otherwise.

I'm using an alienware aurora 5500 right now and I can say it works like a charm. The only trick to a new alienware desktop is that all the tech support have spanish accents and they arive in slightly less than mint condition. Well for me it did, considering I live about 20 hours away from the alienware factory. Anywho, go with the aurora. It's totally worth it.

I got a E-Machine T2875 and it works pretty good for me I just bought a videocard and a ram card and all together it was about $800

E-Machines are very reliable computers. I got one for $650 a year ago and it still works perfectly.

2.92 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 Procesor with HT
512 MB RAM (Upgraded to 1.024 GB RAM)
256MB Video Card (Probably Radeon)
All your fancy gadgets. It reaches from drive C to like drive I. That's 7 drives without the external drives.

The best computer is the one that you built yourself. Alienware is just too expensive, especially for your needs. Yeah, you get a cool tower and support for one year but guess what? They won't send a technitian to your house to actually see what's wrong. Your best bet is to go to CompUSA or BestBuy and fix it there.

You want a top-of-the-line PC while it being not too expensive, make it yourself. Sure, you won't have all the parts for some time, and then you have to build it, but, you only pay the parts and nothing else.

One sentence. Don't get a Dell. My dad has a Vaio. I love it. My mom has a Dell. I hate it. I often want to throw it out the window, but that would result in bad things... The Dell was bought like 2 months after the Vaio, yet it has a slower processor and less RAM. I'm not sure about the graphics cards in either. They can play Renegade... that's about as far as I've pushed them. The Dell runs REALLY slow (I scan it for viruses and spyware, and defrag keeps telling me I don't need it... I think it's lying, but even after I actually do it, it's still just as slow). I hardly do any scanning on the Vaio, and it runs probably twice as fast as the Dell.

In conclusion, get a Vaio, not a Dell.

I wonder why everybody hates E-Machines. There is nothing wrong with mine. In fact, I've had far more problems with my old Dell.

I have a DELL here, I almost never have a problem with mine. I take care of it though.
I paid $1500 for mine.

On the other hand my friend bought one for $1000 and it ran OK, some screw ups here and there. There were occasions that he couldn't start it though. He had to restart it like 3 times.

If you guys ever need a good program to get rid of spyware and shiz like that get SPYBOT: Search and Destroy.

Yeah Moose, I've done everything short of reinstalling the OS. I'm going to do this in a few days -- not because I think it will help -- but to prove to my dad that this computer is a hunk of junk.

Oh yeah, what I'm using now is a Dell and it was $1600 or something like that 5 years ago.

Looks like I picked just about right, maybe a little overboard on graphics card, but hey, I'm getting a free game tongue.gif
