This game will rock the foundations of the Battle.net Community...

For any of you who have read this epic tale, you know that well, it is grand and all-encompassing. Just think of the possibilities that I am coming up with.

This will of course take all 8 normal players and Player 12 to complete. I'll use a combination of X-Tra Editor for the easy stuff, and StarForge for the hard stuff : )
Yoshi had an ingenious idea with the skyscrapers... well, I'm going to recreate the vast cities of Robert Jordan's world. Now we'd all have to be fools to believe that this can fit in ONE map, wouldn't we? Since I'm only on Book Six (Lord of Chaos) at the moment, that is about all that I can write about. But fear not! I'll get to work reading night and day on the other ones. Well, about the map size, I'm not going to include Seanchan. As far as I can tell, it's pointless up till now.

I'm guessing that this little project could take all summer, but here is a list of the things I will include.

-Grand cities, courtesy of an original idea from Yoshi
-A massive command system:
a. I borrow this from C&C: Generals. You will pick a commander and get bonuses for having that commander. I'm thinking of a couple of categories:
1.Infantry General - Infantry costs are reduced by 25% and you can upgrade your infantry to an elitist unit (this basically goes for all the generals, and you can pick other generals mid-game, but if you do, all your bonuses disappear!)
2. Cavalry General
3. Siege General
4. Naval Admiral

-Recruitment of "Civilian" Units: these will be weaker than normal army units, but they will cost less and you can train them faster!

-A morale counter: This is a very sketchy thing. It could go two ways, and I plan to make it go the right way. If you lose a city, a battle, etc. your morale goes down. If it goes too far down, there can be open rebellion. Too far and the entire populace goes up in arms against you! Now, on the other hand, if your morale is high, civilians will join your ranks. Also, if your morale is higher than surrounding nations, their civilians could always try to join your country : ) Wow, I'm coming up with this stuff as I go along! In fact, it's turning into a Diplomacy map, which won't be hard to explain as essentially all the nations in the WoT fight each other.
*Make a note* Most of the morale things done in the past to maps have sucked ass. If you know of anything that worked well please notify me!

-To be really in-depth, you must keep supplies ready for your forces! I'll check into that ammo counter, and convert it to all supplies in general.

-I actually noticed this while making a map some years ago (back in the dark days). Once you go to war with someone (you'll have to declare it), they can surrendur. Or if someone is too massively powerful, and you are by yourself, the populace will submit to the bigger nation if they decide to invade. This can be easily stopped by buying upgrades such as "Loyalty to the Motherland" among other things.

-Off the top of my head, I remember playing games such as Star Wars: Rebellion where if you sieged a planet too long the whole galaxy became pissed at you. It will work much the same way in this map.

-A spell system sounds rather neat. I'll simply use the various "science-oriented" units in SC for the spells. There will be 2 categories: Saidin and Saidar, the two sides of the one power. Now in those, there will be things such as Healing and Balefire (really neat stuff that simply makes things cease to exist).

-To keep the interface a little smoother, instead of assigning civilians to the various jobs such as weavers and farmers, you simply make them join the workforce. This generates more income (from your population of civilians, the army pays no taxes). You will raise and lower taxes, which will affect morale too.

-Minerals will be the gold treasury, and gas will be the supplies (like food).

-Once you capture a nation (their last city), you can:
1. Leave them alone.
2. Make them pay tribute to you for however long you wish.
3. Execute their leader (which makes that player lose).

-Of course, as a diplo oriented game, you can also give aid to fellow nations, in the form of supplies and gold!

-Sadly, there are only so many units to work with, so I'll probably just leave the many random villages as simply beacons or doodads :*(

Last but not least, I want your input! I don't know how much faith you can or will put in a rather new member of SEN, but I will assure you to the best of my abilities that this map will beat Yoshi's Matrix title. : P I am a moron, I have no life.

Sounds interesting to note, just make sure you keep the gameplay balanced for all sides, and that not one side has an advantage over the rest, which is difficult.

It looks complicated, but remember, some times amazing complicated scenes and triggers do not make for the best map, people do not enjoy slow maps, well not always, so try not to make it so slow its hard to do anything.

It should be open to different strategies and possibilities, so that playing more than once will not get repetitive, thats an important part.

Try not to rush yourself, keep testing at every important part, and always make back ups to go back to, when mistakes or errors appear, X-Tra Editor and Starforge are not perfect programs!

For the taking of cities i suggest you view a map called; Republic: Europe 1800, created by Fenix'01, which is very similar to your idea, and is completed, and on Battle.Net growing in popularity.
(NB: PM, if you really want it and cannot locate it anywhere)

Small Villages, try and vary how the doodads make it look, and try to keep from using Sprites, as they are limited to 256 (I checked) and once over will effect the game, in the most horrible ways!

Make sure that the commands are easy to follow, and that it is at least easy to get to grips with. Also take note that many on this site can help you, in testing, trigger help and such, so don't be afraid to ask.

As most will say, good luck on your project and hope to see an alpha soon!

All your doing is you're taking a bunch of ideas me and deathknight came up with and trying to throw it into one map. Of course theres nothing stopping me from letting you do that, however I can garentee you that my map "The Matrix" is like no other.

The triggering my map uses is actually highly complex. If you're going to read my matrix thread to steal ideas then you'd better read it all. Its not going to be "finish your objectives and thats the end of the game". Theres going to be so much interactivity. You can watch a movie. Join a gang. Rob a bank. and so on.

I'm not being compeititive, but if thats really what you want, bring it on!

Sheesh, almost every mapper person I know of has tried, in one form or another, to make a "ultra super mega uber map"... and failed. Not to piss into your milkshake, but I'm a wee bit skeptical either of you are going to finish... at least to the degree of majesty you intend.

I'm guessing that this little project could take all summer, but here is a list of the things I will include.

So many times have l heard this lie, only 1 map maker has been able to achive what they have said, and sucessfully finished completely. You on the other hand, have been gloating, bloating, and mostly boasting about your map skills yet you have nothing to show for what you say you are. Not after asking questions that an advanced map maker would know, a mod [Or you] finally changed your map skill to average. The person sucsessful of his map is Mp)3, and his map is so high in quality, that it took him almost a whole year to complete. If you expect to complete a map in summer, then l dont think your 'little project' will 'rock the foundations' if you know what it means.

Edit: Map was Everarcha Rpg, so big, it cannot be attached, Email me for it.

EDIT- Wow, my earlier post did get through after all. Blah to forum downtime/ISP glitching. Blah I say!

Which map was that?

Anyway I partly agree, since virtually all non-casual map makers I know have at one point or another attempted an "ultra super mega uber map", in one form, and to this date I've only seen a handful actually get finished, or even released at all, as incomplete of abbrieviated. Myself included.

As a matter of fact, as the self-appointed master of uber map projects, let me give this advice (if you really are serious about it): don't set yourself up for too high an expectations. The way I find I finish all my larger map projects is by simply never believing that I couldn't. Whenever I start a map project, usually I begin with a notion that I can get it done in a few days of hard work. Then that turns into weeks. Then it turns into months. Though I may have it in some corner of my mind that I KNOW a given map will take much longer than I ideally hope it should, I never really fall into believing that and thus continue to work at it like i'll have it done the very next day.

I dunno if that just means I'm crazy, naive, ignorant, or just plain over the top. You decide. tongue.gif

So far, you guys have seen some pretty nice results with my matrix map. The chance of Felagund finishing is bad, and even badder for it being better than my matrix map.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2004-05-27 at 11:35:37
Heh heh, I may yet have nothing to show for my... expertise, but I have been testing various ideas for a long time. And, I do not know if you will believe me when I say that I have not glanced at Yoshi's list of ideas. Maybe I should...

And you guys should realize that competition churns out better products! Well, I must admit, my map is going in a little different direction than Yoshi's. Mine will have a grand scale, involving most of the world of the Wheel of Time. It will, of course (not to say in a better way), be "bigger" than Yoshi's as his takes place in a city. I won't involve a movie in this because it doesn't pertain to the story, so you'll have to consider the differences in our maps when criticizing them! And by that I do not mean quality.

Well, I know that one of your points can go either way : P

In this... "contest," it sounds as if Yoshi's map will be extremely complex as well. Don't worry, the commands will be tested thoroughly and streamlined, though perhaps n00bs won't understand the finest points. On another point, it sounds as if Yoshi's map's triggers will be more directed to a certain point on the map, while mine will be for generally the entire map. I don't know if this is the case as I haven't even seen the map, but that sounds to be the case from what I've gathered on the official thread.

One thing that ticks me off is that you guys barely give the underdog the benefit of the doubt. I'm going to come back in less than three months with a great, impressive map and spit it in your faces! ranting.gif Gahahahah!

I'd like to point out that I haven't used any of Yoshi's ideas as I came up with them on my own ; ) They might be the same but it isn't as if he copyrighted them. And Yoshi, you should feel complimented if a person strives to make a better map than your's, because it probably means that your map will be one of the best!

And yes, we can say both maps will be great, and only time will tell which is the victor...

Yoshi, as a good sportsman, good luck!

I sure wouldn't. But how can you say: "It will, of course (not to say in a better way), be "bigger" than Yoshi's as his takes place in a city" if you haven't even peaked at the topic hmm?

QUOTE

actually, all spells and abilities are globally compatible. They work all across the map.

I'm not insulted, I'm just rather skepitical about you coming in here and the first thing you do is mention how better this will be than my ideas smile.gif

You can say it'll be "good", but its not all that great of an idea to insult my map. Expecially when theres so many people here waiting for it.

Anyways, if you want compitition, you got it.

Well, i wish you both good luck, and lets not have anything like a flame war, because there would only be one winner, anyhow, lets just hope for two "great" maps worthy of playing, side-by-side, Starcraft is for anyone, and everyone to enjoy! As should you maps.

You cant really do that considering your map skill is only average, and you have proved that you cant be an advanced. We dont give you the benifit since all you do is boast that your the best, but from what l've seen, your doing it right now, and you have nothing to show for it.
