Staredit Network -> Lite Discussion -> My look on just how robust our brains are.

When you think about it, what is one of the primary things our brains have to store? Our memories, of course!

I did some calculations on how big a video file you would get if you recorded 65 years of video straight, AKA most of your life.

Think about it, if 2 hours of 16Mbps (megaBITS, an eighth of a megaBYTE) video is about 14 gigabytes, and you do the rest of the math, (multiplying by 12 hours to get the size of a days worth of video, and on like that until you get to 65 years of video.) you'd eventually reach a size of exactly 4,099,680,000 (4 trillion) megabytes.

Now, to simplify it a bit, you can get that number down to 4,099,680 gigabytes.

Still too much, you say? Well, you can still get that number to 4,099 terrabytes (YIKES!)

Anyone who runs a big website should be familiar with a terrabyte, it is literally 1,000 GBs.

So, with 4000 TBs still too big, I researched on Wikipedia and discovered that 1000 TBs=1 Petabyte.

So, we finally the answer, 65 years of HIGH quality video=4 petabytes.

Wow, the human brain IS robust.

And of course, these numbers don't include everything else we store in our brains, knowledge, etc, but you must admire how big our brains really are smile.gif

Note: There is NO ONE who can perfectly recall everything they've experience, so most of this "video" is probably lost. Also, since we sleep for about 10 hours a day, a huge chunk of the video is boring.

Now I just wish I could watch my life video! Since I don't know any single person who has a petabyte hard drive , I can't sad.gif

Not to mention my head doesn't exactly have a USB port...

Now, discuss your views on this subject...

the exact is not 1000 its 1028- see its exponential of 2
2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256 512 1028, this is the number they use in computer engineering.
1028 megabyte = 1 GB - 1028 GB = 1 Terra = 1028 TB = 1 PB

Uh, 512 * 2 is 1024. tongue.gif

And I think our brain has a lot more things that would take up space besides memory... such as actually running the body, for instance.

Think of the RAM required. Perfect video quality, no loading screens, no lag.

Yeah, I considered that, but our brains weren't enginneered by humans smile.gif
(Thank Goodness!)

Let's see, with the extra 24 per 1000 bytes (starting from the very bottom) that adds about 2.5% to the total. A little math I guess...

(4*0.025)+4=4.1PBs

At least now the number is more exact now smile.gif

And for the RAM, uh, I don't think CompUSA can help you there, let's say you have a unit of ram for every 8 units of memory (1 byte of ram for 8 bytes of storage)

You'd have to have AT LEAST 512 terrabyte ram!

OK, now all of this is driving me crazy, that figure is still only for memories!

But you also forget alot of things you experience. Remember anything from when you were two? wink.gif

Also, you don't remember everything in exact detail. I remember I played Uberena an hour ago, but couldn't replay the whole match in my head. The details I do remember probably take up less space than the entire match in perfect video.

The storage capacity of the brain is still immensely huge though.

i heard that our brains can store enough information to fill the grand canyon like 14 times with books...

God. If our brains lagged we'd be screwed. Walking on the street one day, and the lag comes. O noez. GG us. I want to download my songs onto my brain. I could fit like 100,000,000,000 songs on it. That way i wouldnt need an ipod. Our brains prolly got like 30gb RAM.

It depends on what part of the brain you are talking about. Running of the body is generally done with the thalamus and hypothalamus. The Cerebellum also plays the main role in muscle movement. The cerebrum is the main tool for memory, although it is also used for sensory, so that would take a little bit away from it.

Plus the file of "life" (I suppose it would be called) would take up more space than a normal video file, as it includes the sensory of smell and taste as well as simply sight and sound.
Another factor would be whether or not our brains compress the file...
I can't believe I'm saying this.

Brain specs:

RAM: 3-4 terabytes (You need that much. Think about it, you need about 2 terabytes just to have sight (that's 12 frames per sec, resolution at least googolplex^googolplex, at least googolplex^googolplex colours, all with NO lag))
Storage: approx. 6.8 petabytes -- Used: approx. 1.9 petabytes
Operating System: WindowsHuman 7.8
Processor: Pentium 5824 (constantly updating)
I.Q.: 130+

P.S.: I.Q. is our ability to conduct basic logical processes (puzzles, comparing data, etc.), and would be the human equivalent of A.I.

We remember everything (Barring those first few years). It's the recollection that's the problem.
