Here are some free programs that I use, or have used:

Computer Utilities

Internet Browser: Firefox
-Opera

Browser Toolbar: Google Toolbar for Firefox

Anti-Virus: AVG Free Anti-Virus
Useful for identifying viruses. While the free edition is unable to heal corrupt files, it can delete them and quarantine them, or lock them so the malicious aspect cannot harm your computer.

Anti-Spyware: Ad-Aware SE Personal
-Spybot Search and Destroy

Overclocking Utility: RivaTuner
Used to overclock ATI and nVidia gpu's (graphics cards). Very powerful, and it warns you if you overclock the card too much. Still, use at your own expense.

Ram Defragmenter: Ramdef
Defrags your memory as it gets fragmented through general use

Computer Identification Utility: SiSoftware Sandra
Not sure about what is on your computer? Use Sandra to determine everything from what brand motherboard you have to expansion slots and memory set-up.

PC Benchmark: 3DMark 05
A great benchmark tool.
-PCMark 05
3DMark 05's complementary benchmarking tool.

Productivity and Media

Office Suite: OpenOffice
A great replacement for Microsoft Office, with a nearly perfect compatibility with many office suites already out there.

Media Center: iTunes
-Winamp

Music Notation: Finale NotePad

P2P Network: Morpheus
-Limewire
-Bittorrent

Image Editing: Gimp
A rather decent Photoshop substitute, even if it's not a replacement.
-TerraGen
A fun program to render terrain with realistic effects.
-Photofiltre

Programming Utilities: Eclipse
-JCreator
-C++ Compiler

Programming Languages: Java SDK and Runtime Environment
-Python

Entertainment

Games: StepMania
PC Spinoff of Dance Dance Revolution
-DOS Games
Download and play many of the oldies, including Doom, Quake, and over 400 other classics!
-GunBound
-Lineage 2
A 2 GB download for a free and awesome MMO (massively mega online) RPG. While the official servers cost money, there are many private ones that you can play on for free!

Instant Messenger: Trillian
Talk in AOL, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ instant messengers, all in one program!
-GAIM
GAIM supports a whole host of IM protocols

Feel welcome to make suggestions. If you want to add a free program to this list, please provide a link.

Is this for computer aiding software only? Becuase I know of a couple (such as:

Noteworthy Composer

) that have been very helpful to me in a musical aspect. Also I'm not sure if this the right thread for this.

Thanks, but when you submit a link, could you make sure the link is to an information page about the program? Also, please indicate whether or not it is a trial version or complete version of the program.

My bad... try this: http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/

And yes its evaluation software. But you get all the options of buying just an annoying message at startup.

I needed some Protection from the things that harm your computer all the time. Those protection tools seem suprising for free tools...

they work by getting donations from happy users :0

Lol guys...To me, some software is free...

Why don't you put SpyBot: Search and Destroy and Spy Sweeper on the list? They are both great, but Spy Sweeper has a 14 day free trial.

Trillian rocks. It taught me how many messengers there were, and brought them into one biggrin.gif. But the basic version had problems transferring files through YIM.
Oh, and of course I use free software such as MPQ Draft, Win MPQ, etc. And bots, spyware blockers.. etc.

Trillian seems a little confusing for me because of the way that the layout is different. The profile setup is different, too. I prefer to stay with AIM if you are "basic" but stay with Trillian if you like the "future layout" of IMs.

EDIT: Why not add iTunes or Morpheous? They are both free music players and Morpheous lets you browse the internet on a different tab and search for music files too!

For P2P programs theres stuff like Limewire, Morpheous, eDonkey/eMule, KaZaA, WinMX, etc. But some of those might have been taken down already.

Fun programs:
Stepmania
PC version of DDR. You have to hunt for stepfiles yourself though.

You must add the Gimp.

Awesome image editor, almost photoshop quality.

Alright. I updated with those and even added my own (DOS Games).

P2P is the gateway of free software!
But meh, for trials... I'd have to say Webroot's Spy Sweeper and Windows washer.
I can't give you the link right now because my computer sucks and is laggy. Oh well, google is your friend.

Wait a minute...Morpheous is Pay 2 Play? I thought it was free. My friend just downloaded it for free...Or is it just the basic?

Ermm....
I think what people mean by p2p is Peer to peer.
I'm not sure though.

The best P2P is limewire. tongue.gif

for more free stuff, go visit downloads.com and the features section.

Moose what's wrong with your computer? Trillian is using a whopping 7 mb of memory right now... though for some reason StarCraft has decided to use 48% of my 3 GHz cpu? confused.gif

GAIM is NOT Google Talk. Jeez.

GAIM can connect to Google Talk, but that obviously won't make them the same thing.

Sorry. Thanks PCFredZ though, for pointing that out. That's why you should give links though.

I'll give you some free softwares that people may find interesting or use. I like this list but you should make it more organized (*hint hint*).

Also, please remove any trial programs from the list. It sort of destroys the purpose to create a list of free programs. Besides, we have a good music notation program already ;D
