Staredit Network -> UMS Showcase -> Gassers!

Yeap, I suppose I'll round out this brief mapping spree of mine (before I get back to my bigger projects) with one final map idea I've had on the back burner and wanted to finally get made: gassers!

Anyhoo, here's the nutshell: each player starts with 3 lives and a defiler. The goal of course is to be the last person left alive. To kill other players, you have to suffocate them in gas (dark swarm) clouds, which gradually and increasingly wear away at their HP, the longer they stay in it. Swarms cost 10 energy per casting, though, but every minute and a half each player spawns a burrowed zergling in the center, which they can use to recover part of their casting energy by consuming. Furthermore, every 20 seconds or so a random item will appear somewhere on the field, just to make things interesting. You'll have to play the map to find out what they are, though. wink.gif

This is probably my second shortest official map in development time (second to Borrowers, at about one hour total), but thankfully it doesn't show for it. I spent much longer of course testing/playing it at various stages (hence the version number), as I figured I'd rather release a relatively completed product than smaller part-way ones that wear down people's patience to re-download with each new version. So anyway, here ya go! Enjoy!

P.S. This is also my first official map that uses all player slots for humans, has players with random start locations, is vanilla starcraft compatible, and has all triggers belonging only to All Players. Just a little factoid, in case your interested. wink.gif

Can i ask how you worked the HP, is it set to an Death Count system for the Cloud amounts they are under and can be updated with time?

Just minerals. They go down the longer you're in a cloud, and at a faster rate.

So it works like the one in Worms then?

Oh come on, of course I would tell it's a good map but that decision can't really come from me with justice, can it? Go on and play it and decide for yourselves.

Besides, I need some help spreading it. wink.gif

Our downloads database gives about every map about 100 downloads after a while.

And the map night is another way to get it out to the public.

Well Moose, it will soon be not the map of the month. Dun dun dunnnn!

Anyhow sounds interesting, although I can't test it because my comp is bonkers and I only get on SC every 10 days. And I'm usually working on other things...

Well, I'm open to making one more new version of this, if anyone has any ideas for it. Suggestions?

Maybe include a four player version with the ability to do minor tricks, like jumping positions, converting clouds into disruption webs, which improve life and such. Maybe? Doesn't need to be four player, just a thought.

V1.8 is here! Changes include...
  • 3 new powerups (full vision of map (lasts 30 seconds), vacuum (removes gas and sucks everyone to center for 10 seconds w/ death), money)
  • Purchases include-
    - +50 HP (even over natural limit)
    - Random teleport
    - 8 hallucinations
    - Metasynaptic Node upgrade (more energy)
  • Voting at the start (lives, round-based or continous, and whether to have powerups or not)
  • Cheasy briefing animation (one of the first I've ever done, believe it or not)
  • Gas damage tweaks (duration inside a given dark swarm increases rate of damage indefinitely)
  • Full view of map after death.
Horraj!

Yah! You included the random teleport, was that fun to work with?
