Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Is AI possible?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by atlass on 2006-01-01 at 00:28:11
Do you think artificial intelligence is possible? Not wang Cheney but truly conscious computers, like in sci-fi.

How would such a computer be invented? I don't think we are smart enough to just design one; we'd have to use evolutionary programming. But how many cycles of processing did it take for humans to evolve? I don't know, but if you count from the origin of life 4 billion years ago, it must be quite a large number mellow.gif

t wouldn't really be possible for us to harness that much processing with forseeable technology. So the programmers have to be good enough at directing the evolutionary programming to acheive the same result.

One obvious solution is to use goal-based AI. Consciousness is not only about reflection of the environment, but also the goals achieved by means of that representation. Here's an idea for a sci-fi book: Some FPS or RTS programmers come up with an AI that studies your combat style and evolves, and the AI learns so quickly it becomes conscious and escapes into cyberspace... Kind of like a William Gibson story. Iain M. Banks writes sci-fi about artificial intelligence that is quite philosophical.

If AI did exist, would we be morally responsible for it as though it was human? (I think we would.) If it became much more intelligent than us, would it be justified in treating us like we treat fairly intelligent animals such as pigs? (Probably not.)

There're already evolutionary AI programms, and this was already a topic.

Well... AI is... possible... but not to the extent of the human mind... Humans feel pain, agony, fear, love, happiness, depression, suffering, anger, delight... so many feelings... It'd be impossible to create AI emotions. Just like in the movies... AI would probably rage out of control and backfire. You can't 100% control everything. You can't control wild animals, murderers, fires, floods, or death, etc... therefore how could you control an AI being? Eventually they would realize why they were taking orders and commands from humans when they themselves would be much more intelligent to follow their own orders. Also... the humans race... for generations and still today has disrimination and racism... AI beings would probably be discriminated and fill ghettos as more and more people dislike them because they're not human. Its like in the movie AI... Also... why would you massively produce AI beings(if you could)? We have already have an overpopulation problem that's not going to go away for a long time. We don't need more people... we're losing enough natural resources as it is...

Strong AI (yes this is a real term), mixed with EI (emotional intelligene) is in my belief impossible for a human mind without having genetically engineer their brains to be more intelligent to perceive a design for such a thing. Maybe if we left off each generation to generation and eventually stem away from the basics. It may be possible, but we would've possibly killed our species by the time that happens.

A human being in the broadest sense, is an organic machine in my opinion. Unless there is such thing as a soul in order for life to "truly" be possible is probably beyond human understanding. To conclude, I doubt it is possible.

Yes, there's been a topic like this before, but its gone now sad.gif.
I think AI is possible. If we completely take apart and understand every part of the human body and are able to recreate everything including the brain, then we can add addition features that make it a computer and shape it like a box (lol).

Ok so let's see what we have covered in the tearns of AI.
  • Artificial Sight √
  • Artificial Hearing √
  • Artificial Touch √
  • Artificial Smell √
  • Artificial Taste X
  • Artificial Learning Minds √
  • Artificial Free Thought X

But we're almost there.

in·tel·li·gence
n.

1.
1. The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge.
2. The faculty of thought and reason.
3. Superior powers of mind. See Synonyms at mind.
2. An intelligent, incorporeal being, especially an angel.
3. Information; news. See Synonyms at news.
4.
1. Secret information, especially about an actual or potential enemy.
2. An agency, staff, or office employed in gathering such information.
3. Espionage agents, organizations, and activities considered as a group: “Intelligence is nothing if not an institutionalized black market in perishable commodities” (John le Carré).

We have almost all of that covered in machines, now we just need to give them thoguht and more reason. Possibly make them ethereal.

I believe AI is when the machine can not only learn, but code (as in programming) as it goes. Missing something? Code it in! Its like teaching a kindergardener the alphabet, teach it c++!

i think computers have allready some AI.
ever notice times when you really need the computer to work or do something, it goes kaput, and the next day works fine.
ever need the printer to print something, and break down or jam?

you know what i mean. ><

I Think Far to Many People have Proved That AI is Possible, this Topic Shouldnt Exist

Emotions are just reactions to situations. They're not nearly complicated as people make them out to believe.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Vibrator on 2006-01-01 at 23:25:28
But everyone displays emotions differently, having a natural feel to the emotions would be difficult. Emotions in general would be fairly easy, recognizing a situation and reacting.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Syphon on 2006-01-01 at 23:25:32
Not to mention that emotions aren't exactly intellegent. If we didn't have emotions surviving would be alot easier.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2006-01-02 at 00:16:13
Never an AI to feel like us humans, although emotions can be simulated, they cannot actually be felt, The human brain cannot create something more complex then itself, Humans are estimated to use only 10% of their brains, therefore humans can only make something, 10% as smart, the other 90% is sub-conscious thinking, thinking your mind does without you realizing it, this is what makes us humans so unique.

yes ai is possible
yes it will be used in the furture
yes the robots will turn on us for self preservation
yes it will become the matrix

we already have a thread about this and it got pretty long and boring

People use all of their brains, but they don't use 80% of it to think.

With out counting the whole soul thing, emotions are just reactions. It's a concrete concept turned into an abstract one to be able to explain it easier. AI has the ability to have emotions just like us. Maybe even more.

In a way, we're all robots. We're just not made of metal.

A robot is a compliation of data, and thats all.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Vibrator on 2006-01-03 at 00:34:32
No, a robot is a machine that can do things with a compilation of data.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2006-01-03 at 00:40:13
But, my point is there is a difference between a compilation of data and the human brain, and not all the computers in the world could hold the amount of information as a baby's brain.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2006-01-03 at 18:57:33
I believe you are talking about a self aware robot.

I don't think there would really be a need for any robots like that, but probably someone will make one, and it will cry. And we will be happy.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kashmir on 2006-01-03 at 20:40:27
Guys, I'm going to tell you this now, since some of you obviously haven't learned this yet. Computers only do what they are told to do by a human. Any time you have a problem with a program or the machine, it is human error. If there is an error with a program, the code is messed, machine not working? Probably broke it. A lot of the AI in games and such is just the illusion of intelligence, nothing more.

artificial intelligence
n. Abbr. AI

  1. The ability of a computer or other machine to perform those activities that are normally thought to require intelligence.
  2. The branch of computer science concerned with the development of machines having this ability.

artificial intelligence

n : the branch of computer science that deal with writing computer programs that can solve problems creatively; "workers in AI hope to imitate or duplicate intelligence in computers and robots" [syn: AI]

so basically it is requiring that computeres learn from thier environments and solve problems. in tests robots have done this.

Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kashmir on 2006-01-03 at 23:01:29
limitedly so its still not A.I. A human brain has no limit, it deletes useless information that will never be used and recycles that space. A Robot has a capacity.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Sie_Sayoka on 2006-01-03 at 23:07:28
yes but as technology developes the capacity will grow greater and the speed at which it processes information will become faster. it will reach advanced thinking sooner or later.

then thats when they will strike! they will start to kill us and use us as energy as an alternative for solar energy. and we will be underground defending against them.... ohmy.gif
