Ok it may look like a pile of orangish goo, sitting in a pool. But it seems to be sweeping the ocean, in what could be the next big threat to the environment. It is a sea squirt, and a newly found form of one at that. Sea squirts are commonly found as single organisms that have an underdeveloped backbone and have a cellulose shell. (stuff normally plants have) They have never been that big of a threat to really anyone, until now.
Scientists have discovered a new form of the sea squirt, that has made its home along many regions of coastal areas. One difference between this squirt and others is that it develops in groups, has no predators and is rather acidic, and is eating many underwater plants. This creature does not follow normal breeding patterns, as it is asexual and can reproduce sexually as well; and will continue to reproduce even when normal conditions have disappeared. (Such as the amount of food in the area, or the amount of creature in the area. A test showed that in a short period of time the organisms spread across the floor of a container, up the wall, and clung to bubbles on the surface of the container, eventually filling it up) This might possibly be the next devastator of coral reefs and other coastal areas.

Yucky, isn't it.

Yup, hope it doesn't become a big threat and an addition to the others contributing to the END OF THE WORLD. Oh and where did you get the information?

wow thats really disturbing. especially how it appeared out of nowhere and its irregular behavior. maybe an alien attack to destroy our ecosystem?

Woah that's weird. It's kind of like a cancer, reproducing continously no matter what conditions occur. I hope they can contain it some how... ermm.gif

I wonder what kills this stuff, although I suppose using a poisen would be a bad idea, seeing as it would do nearly as much damage to the ecosystem anyway.
Nasty stuff by the way.

Mutant species that evolved through time through DNA evolution? We can wait, and they'll probably go legs and come onto land.

Umm, if I poked it with my finger, could it hurt me?

evolution works through millions of years... or so they say. while this just appeared. it could be an ancient form of life that has been trapped in a rock or something.

since the growth is acidic we should use bases on it. or just nuke it.

Well...Why don't they just breed a certain kind of fish to eat this stuff. Isn't it true that the more you try something, the more you become immune to effects from it?

if we use an animal to clean it up it will most likely be microorganisms. they eat almost anything even non organic matters

Is it possible to make a sort of underwater vaccuum to suck these goo-ish meanies up?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathawk on 2006-01-02 at 18:55:45
So why is it all of a sudden such a big threat?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by HorroR on 2006-01-02 at 19:05:14
Well, we were unprepared for it.

Nature is hurting the environment. We need to protect her from herself. Nature is being unnatural. disgust.gif

the goo is a micro organism. somewhat like a plankton i believe. it reproduces asexually and sexually a vaccuum will not suck up all of it. it will however slow its progress

This is probably a biological mutation caused by chemicals in the ocean.

I got it reading a weekly magazine I get, called Science News. Its quite informational.

Thats one of the things they are worried about.

It won't slow it's process, even when physical conditions say that it should.

I'm guessing that pollution has something to do with it's creation, as they suspect it was made either near japan or on the coasts of the united states.

no i mean sucking up all of the goo will slow its progress.

And either disposing of it or quarantining it? Yeah, that could work... it would just be pretty hard to do...

So... this is man made life?

Or possibly, even genetically created by man.
