Staredit Network -> Games -> /USERS -- Starcraft outlive Warcraft III?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathknight on 2006-01-06 at 11:57:58
I play on USEast, and it's 12:25 AM right now. I want to keep checking this.

I did a /users and there were:
23424 games of Starcraft being played, 53326 games total.

I asked Syphon how many Diablo II games were being played, and he gave me:
25350 games of Diablo II.

I noticed this didn't exactly add up, assuming Warcraft III was bigger than Starcraft, so I went on W3:TFT and got:
1540 games of Warcraft III:TFT.

Now regardless of the 12 players maximum in Warcraft III, I would have expected it to be a much larger number. I'd like to do a few /users throughout the day to see if there really is such a difference, or if the Warcraft III players are just all in bed, which also brings up a couple question:
Are Warcraft III players generally younger than Starcraft players? Or are the Starcraft players from a distant time zone?

-------------
11:23 AM

USEAST:

45497 games total.
68 games of Warcraft II
19170 games of Starcraft: Broodwar
2881 games of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne

~~11:40 AM
USWEST:
2858 games of Warcraft III: TFT
17933 games of Starcraft: BW

ASIA:
2860 games of Warcraft III: TFT
17876 games of Starcraft: BW

It's becoming conclusive that more people are playing Starcraft, and Diablo II, than Warcraft III.
--------------
The /users command looks like it's designed to include all the official servers.

For the information to be accurate, you need to check all of BLizzard's games.

Diablo I
Diablo II
Diablo II: LoD
Starcraft
Starcraft: BW
Warcraft II
Warcraft III: RoC
Warcraft III: TFT

The reason why there aren't so many WCIII games is that most of the Warcraft community in general plays WoW and as you might know, WoW can have over 500,000 players online at once with 5million subscribers total.

This isn't about WoW though. It's about the standard Blizzard games.

How can that be?

There's still a handicap because of WoW; Though Starcraft will probably survive longer than WCIII, but probably because of WoW. So, yeah, your probably right about sc lasting longer than wc (to some extent...)

I think the servers are capable of handling 500,000 people on at once. However, only 5 million people suscribed.

My bad, it's 500,000.

Heres the thing, on Starcraft most of the "users" are clan bots and I mean MOST, like 80% The only thing holding Starcraft together is the desire to hold onto a dying game. Now personaly i dont think 1000 users would be on WC but 20000 be on SC espcially since to me Starcraft is dead.

I think the reason why there are less WC3 players is because WC3 sucks ass. That's just 2 million dollars more that could've been used on making SC2 and not some other crap. I heard they're making a Diablo 3, wtf!

Yeah wow is a killer for warcraft but I dont understand why personally I dont think wow is that cool I played it once and hated it its just like another diablo

I believe Warcraft takes a step forward in someways, but misses the vital element that keeps Starcraft played, BALANCE.

Warcraft only requires a dozen workers. I do NOT enjoy pressing P, D or S 50 times every SC game I play.

Warcraft does not have as many super tactics like reaver drops mutalisk raids, etc. That way I don't have to worry about my 50 workers dying in 2 seconds.

Warcraft has more strategies because there are more upgrades, races and units to choose from.

Warcraft has an automatic skill matchmaking system, so you won't get completely pwned or win easily.

Now why I don't like WC:

Orcs. They have the best defenses, Blademaster and many units.

Orcs have burrows. If you smack some peons, they can go into burrows and that's 500 hp you have to kill to get that peon, and hopefully it won't go into another one. Undead workers are exposed and you can't replace them if you are teching. Humans are also exposed. Elf wood miners are exposed, but can go into mines or explode.

Blademaster has Windwalk, which combines cloaking, speed and bonus damage, into one incredible spell. He already has high DPS with critical strike, but consider any waek unit or hero to be instantly KO'ed. He forces you to get detectors, unlike any other hero or unit in the game.

As for the units, Orcs have the only unit based stun which is ensnare. This can hold your hero infinitely if they have two or more raiders. Anti air? Bats make mass air against orc suicide. Does any other race have a unit that completely cancels air units? Finally, Orcs have the most amount of units available at tier 2, since they get the powerful wyvern. So not only do they get the most powerful anti air, but they get the most powerful tier 2 air.

Did I mention that they don't need a huntres hall, graveyard or blacksmith in order to get their tier 1, 3-food unit? Did I mention they only have 3 unit upgrades, instead of 4 as other races do? Did I mention they have the least amount of buildings to build, in addition to one building that makes 4 units? Did I mention they have a 100 gold item that heals 1200 hp? Yes, Orc makes me mad.

Anyway, I'd like it if auras did not exist, so people would actually use DIFFERENT heroes rather than the usual ones like the DeathKnight or ArchMage.

Or better yet, remove heroes to make balancing much easier.

Nearly every custom game in WC3 plays the same. You are a hero and you fight stupid enemies to level up. BORING.

At least in Starcraft they have games like baseball, cat and mice or bounds (yes I am complimenting bounds). Where's the creativity or variety?

Did I mention that WC3 lags more because it requires more specs to handle the poly heavy models, instead of the 2d sprites of SC? Performance is what I care about, not looks. If they can fit 12 players in WC3, I'd expect at least 16 players should be possible in SC, if they attempted it.

And my final complaint is the map editor. At least, if I hated custom maps people make and the melee, this should be my haven right? Nope, it's a giant leap in SCs in terms of power AND complexity. Maybe this is why we don't see creative maps?

So it's a mixed bag for me.

To make this really conclusive we should take a reading for every game at about 9 o'clock for a week, and average out the numbers. We'll jsut need to find someone who either has every game or split it up.

Revelade, that last part. Someday people will become more creative with modding and we'll have 20 player starcraft games floating aorund tongue.gif

Golden-Fist, they are gonna make D3 by 2007 and SC2 by like 2007 or 2008. (supposidly) But D3 will most likely be ruined with pay to play. I wouldnt mind it be a MMO but P2P would suck ass.

And Warcraft maps arnt in much variety because no one wants to screw with the world editor for a month just to get one level going. I mean they have Kodo Tags and whatnot which are LIKE Cat n Mouse on SC, defence maps that to me could use some fixing, and LOTS of madness maps like Footman Wars. Not much variety but WC holds true potential. All it needs is someone to make a much easier editor like General Mensk did for SCXE.

Actually I was on SC earlier this week and I saw about 50,000 SC players out of 150,000 total players.

You're typing about users being bots, when the topic was about games played, not users online, therefore you can't read. gg no rm.
