In most racing games I play, I NEVER EVER let go of the gas. Whether it's Mario Kart, Need for Speed to Cruisin USA, my thumb is always on A.

Those who let go of the gas should be shot.[/center]
That leads me to my point: Why not make "go" on all the time? Obviously, you would want your car to be stopped in a game where you need to be EXTREMELY careful. Think of a game where your car has a bomb strapped to it and one hit on the wall sets you off. I guess the current "press A to go" would work there. But since the majority of racers don't punish you severely when hitting walls, why not make "press A to STOP"?
I think holding A is rather a nuisance. Of course in real life, we want our car to be stopped, because damage REALLY hurts! A hit on a rock could be a dent on your car, which will cost money to repair. So we try as much as we can to avoid accidents. But in games, we don't care at all. We only care that hitting walls slows us down, but we don't care that it is doing damage to our car, which could affect our lives, unlike real life.
Unless there's a game where you are SEVERELY punished for driving recklessly, I believe automatic acceleration to be a better choice, especially on your thumbs.
There are some idiots out there who do brake. And only games with damage effects really make you wanna brake.
Burnout is a game that I consider that shouldn't brake. I mean drifting requires break, which is ok since drifts are the best part, but even the traffic could be punished. Keep going until you cannot no more. Aftertouch in Burnout is like holding gas.
I never let go of the acceleration...
Although it's probably good to keep manual control, because there's obstacles. (Example: one of the tracks in Mario Kart has a train that comes through the course. If you can't brake...

)
Well my favorite racing game. (Podracing) You need to keep a held all the time because of the drastic speeds, but you still need to avoid walls because a few hits and you blow up. So, who cares what game it's in. Always leave a down.
I agree.
I'm not big on racing games but i've played a handful. Games like Gran Turismo, you have to let go of accerlate, you look like you're doing 10mph but you're acutally doing around 150 and you can't stop. Which I found annoying. Mario Kart your car barely moves anyway so turning is no problem. In GTA (Which has a lot of car elements) I mostly don't let go of X but there are times when I have to let go, like when I'm about to fly off a mountain while going up MT.Chillad.
I don't really think there should be a game which only option is to always be moving, but there should be a prefence at Options screen where you can switch it to that. Or just tap acclerate to go, and when you want to stop moving forward just tap it again.
[sub]Maybe an option to turn that on/off. It all matters on the game I guess, some racing games make hitting walls really hurt you, and its a much better idea to slow down before taking the turn [ And I usally just let go of the gas, I still never hit the break ]
Other games, like Need for Speed Undergound, the different types of racing all require different things, drift and street-x both need a break.[/sub]
That's stupid. They're supposed to be racing simulators. You don't break to turn, you just slow down a little. Remember the buttons are pressure sensitive, so it really substitutes the accelerator.
I only use the break when im about to hit a seriously tight turn, other than that, gas and nos are my friends

And i dunno about you guys but the racing games i have ALL effect you when you hit something so if you scrap the wall you slow down, u hit some pylons u slow down all that good stuff. But if a game was made with auto acceleration, that game would friggin suck cause then your just sitting there moving the joystick around (or D-pad, w/e floats your boat) which would make for a dull racer if you ask me.
I let go of acceleration when I need to do a sharp turn but I'll never break. Just need to slow down a bit to make the turn.
I only let go of acceleration in the situations that Kaboom said happen.
And it's reasons like this that I don't play racing games.
I remember Rush 2 and 2049, hehe, if you didn't brake while turning you'd end up exploding on a wall, because you couldn't turn fast enough while excellerating.. Greatness.
In Mario Kart, I only skid.
As said by Kaboom, I only really let go of acceleration when I need to make a sharp turn, or navigate through hazardous obstacles, or when I try to get a powerup or boost. I really don't mind holding the accelerator down that often, though I haven't played a racing game in a while.
The point I'm saying is that unless you have obstacles that will have serious negative effects in the game that are hard to avoid, there's no reason not to have gas on all the time.
The best option would be as Golden-Fist and Valug have said, to have an option for it.
Remember, this is not comparing BRAKE to gas. It's comparing gas to coasting, as in no gas and no brake.
