For everyone that hosts maps on this site (which I'm sure that quite a lot of you do), please stop using map protectors...

I understand that you fear you're maps might be stolen, but think about this. What are they going to do if they attempt to steal your unprotected map, draw their name in the corner? Write "This is mine!!!" in the map description and list the map name as "MINE!!!". Please... If you leave it unprotected, it will be easier for people like me to more closely observe you're map. I never make my own personal changes, I just use it to get a closer look. I can't count the number of times that I've DL'd a map that sounds cool, but I can't take a quick look at it in the editor because it's protected. Please, for the convenience of others, take off those protectors.

ADDITION:
Ugh, I accidently posted this in "Maps in production". But I guess this is somewhat relevant.

Could an admin please move this to "Melee general discussion"

Protection is everything. Copyrights are everything. We are human beings, we yearn to grasp on to every single thing possible and claim it as our own. Map protection is just like planting that flag right there in the center of the tallest hill. Humans are greedy, selfcentered beings that seek only for their own benefit and gain. Why would humans as a whole want to comply with your whole "let's give out our hard work for free" deal? It really isn't a good deal in the end. Just about every person has been scandalized by someone. They all know how it feels to be robbed of their pride and don't want to take the same mistake again. If you feel as though you need to know something, there's always one thing that you can do... ask.

It isn't too hard. If the maker doesn't tell you how or what they did, you can always ask other people. Its not like they are the only ones who invented or did something like that.

What did you need to see?

Red2Blue, I just lost a ton of respect for you.

If their map is truly good enough to be stolen, then they can post it on a good map making site, and claim it as thier own first, then if its good enough itll become pro, and then protect it cause everyone will know the map. Otherwise it doesn't matter.

Don't protect your melee maps.

Okay. Nearly everything you said is wrong.

I still have a map unprotector that used to work when i made UMS maps and i wanted to see triggers in protected D's.

I haven't booted it up, but if I really wanted to, I could go load it up and steal every damn map on the site if I really gave a shiz. The thing is, I don't.

And I would even respect you if you said something such as "Well, people stole my shi†, so thats why I use them." But no. You even take the bullshi† further, by saying

"Map protection is just like planting that flag right there in the center of the tallest hill."

What the fu¢k is wrong with you? Sure, I'll admit, I even agree about the self-centered human thing. But do I somehow manage to work it into everything that I say? No. Not to mention, sure it makes you feel great, no one can steal your shi†. I still can. I don't. Because I don't "yearn to grasp on to every single thing possible and claim it as our own". And yes, I've been "scandalized", (if that's even a word...) many times. But I'll be a dumbàss and use some emo comment like you:

"Isn't it better to trust and to lose, than to never trust? Spread your wings...be who you really want to...People will accept you more if you just open up..."

*pukes*

And I also noticed...you didn't actually say anything about your own opinion. Everyone, re-read his post...he just mentioned humanity as a whole.

Secondly, It's fu¢king STARCRAFT!

If anyone seriously takes pride in this goldmine pile of shi† from '98, please, go get a life. (Feelin' the flames, boo ya! But really, I can't bash starcraft right now, too many things I hate about it. But so many things I love about it ....mmm...)

But come on red2blue...the metaphors made me puke, but the message that you put across made me release the built up shi† in my body.

Anyway...I completely disagree with you, and people should stop protecting their maps. No one is gonna make money of your map. And I doubt there's people that are gonna steal anything on this site. And if they do, good for them. Both of us would know that we're better people and seriously, I could steal everything here, but lying isn't fun in the end. And it doesn't make anyone feel better to say they made something when they didn't, or did something they didn't...and maybe we all have had a phase like that, but who knows. I know that right now, I couldn't give a damn about making maps anymore, stealing anything, or lying to anyone. But that's not what I was saying. Basically...I think it isn't as serious as you claim it to be, and if you feel that way, fine, protect your maps. No one is going to steal it anyway.

Allow me to take a step backwards from these statements, for these statements don't really pertain to me. I was talking about everyone else. I was trying to show to you why people protect their maps and failed to give you my standpoint.

I don't fully protect my maps. I only use guedit. Anyone with a hex editor can crack that with ease. Secondly, I never protect my melee maps... thats just stupid...

I used to think the same way you did. Until that day when someone stole my map. I was never the same, I almost quit. But you see... it actually made me stronger. I would have never made the maps I did if it were not for that experience.

Maybe one day you will experience it too and understand the majority's ways of the protection.

My real reason for protection is to prevent people from rigging the map in their favor. Thats just wrong to make someone have cheats...

Whoops... *frowns*

Then again... it doesn't really work that way for all cases... Ive known some friends that did what you say to be true. Unfortunately... it never really worked out for them and their maps were stolen and "hacked" so that the players can cheat.

Heh. If its only starcraft then why are you getting so worked up about it?

And your chat filter dodging makes me puke too.

alright , that i'll agree with.

for melee and ums. (Well ...ums melee, such as i think its LT obs and they show up with 24 BC 30 seconds in)

but i'll be honest. no one stole my stuff.

no one wanted to steal my stuff. For mannnnnny reasons. and i dont care if they did, i mean, i dont care. deep down, i know i made the map and they dont need to know.

and i'm only worked up...because im worked up about others worked up. i dont mean to be so serious...the whole issue can suck my balls. closedeyes.gif

i just dont think it matters at all. but you might as well not do it so its easier for people to look at the maps.

But i havent had any maps stolen, so i guess i dont know how it feels.

ADDITION:
forgot about the chat filter thing.

it's because i want to say something somewhat harshly, but if someone reads the post and all of a sudden it says "bullshiz", they start laughing and cant take anything i say seriously.

happy.gif

i really dont mean to be such an meanie <== if that's censored to meanie, i'll laugh.

ugh..im editing this because i dont deserve minerals for forgetting all this other stuff. What i wanted to say was...i see the other side of the arguement and i dont really agree with it too much. as in..i'd rather you say what you feel, rather than always take the other side of things. sad.gif No matter, it's only forums, and it makes sense since i know i cant see every side of every issue. such as the map cheating thing, didnt even think about that when i posted.

I agree. Its way easier to look at maps...

then again... thats like someone working on this super hard trigger for days on end... and someone just swooping in for the easy steal.

Its really opinionated...

Its good to think before you react. Its also good to accept both sides before coming to a conclusion. It saves you alot of spam and flame wars that happen rampantly around here.

Go mods.

What do you mean hacked? Melee maps can be hacked? so people can cheat? What does that mean...?
QUOTE

Well, the thing is, melee maps won't be stolen, because the way you get it out is by posting it and playing it. It will have your name on the map, and the post so people know its yours. If someone takes a map of yours and changes the map info or spams thier name on it, they wont get any credit for it.

I'm assuming by "hacked" he meant that they give one base 340234092309042 minerals/gas nodes and the other base gets 3 mins and no gas. But that's stupid considering games played on the melee setting require random start locations...

I was referring to UMS cheats mostly...

I was also talking about neutral players and unrandomized players.

You can literally place neutral units all over a melee map for one player and choose toss during the melee game and mc the neutral workers.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yenku on 2006-01-16 at 08:46:52
Couple things wrong with that:
1. People could do that on a map they made.
2. Why would it be worth it to MC workers?? Maybe heros or something..
3. You have too many huge paragraph spacings. Just press enter once or twice.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Falcon_A on 2006-01-16 at 14:33:06
well...they might want to mc other races workers...

if that works melee, it could make for an interesting toss vs toss game..
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Red2Blue on 2006-01-16 at 15:47:32
Sorry, I guess I hit too many enters (was trying to get away from that quote).

That does work in melee. It sure isn't a burden to mc an opponent's worker when you are protoss and they are a different race... but its a great deal easier to mc a worker when its right there next to you. Sure heros are even better, maybe some flagships like carriers or bcs... it was just an example.
