Report, edit, etc...Posted by Septhiroth on 2006-01-24 at 20:50:27
Through out Time there has been thousands of Generals who have proven themselves to be Intellgent, Wise, Valor, Determined and Powerful. But who do you think is the Greatest General through out the course of History.

Give the Generals Name, give a General background of him and explain why he's seems to be the Greatest General to you.

Note: This could also help us learn new Generals that once existed.

I Think Genghis Kahn was the Greatest General. A Mongolian General during in the 1100- 1200 conquered vast amount of land that reach from Moscow to Beijing.
As his Empire was twice as large than the Roman Empire, he was destined to conquer the World but he eventually failed as he died by Old Age.

Reasons : He Grew an Empire, forgding a myth that encouraged Soldiers during Wars, He was also brilliant on Strategic Warfare.

I could be wrong, but Rommel is the German general, yes?
If so, he was one hell of a general, but many of his failures came from Hitler. Rommel (if that is who I think I'm talking about....) wanted to build heavier defenses at Normandy, but Hitler was utterly convinced the invasion would occur on the northern peninsula (the name escapes me). Hitler also held back Rommel from counterattacking the invasion force with the inland platoons, convinced still that Normandy was a distraction and the invasion would still occur on the northern peninsula.

Stupid Hitler.....

Alexander the great.

He conquered all of the mediterrainian areas
He defeated the persian empire
He founded many cities and states that greatly contributed to our culture today
He completed all of this during his lifetime

sadly he wasnt as good a ruler as he was a conquerer. as a mongol advisor once said. you can defeat your enemies on horseback but you cannot rule an empire on horseback.

The elephant guy....what was his name.... Hannibal!

Even though he lost half his troops in the mountains, he still sacked Rome.

he didnt touch rome.... he plauged the country side though and defeated a numerous amount of roman legions. but his strategy was overused and scipio(roman general) countered it and carthage fell.

Well Hannibal is just cool. He fought against Roman forces with brute strength and strategy. I respect him almost as much as General Yi Sunshin. If you don't know about him, he was a Navy general in Korea who defeated the great Japanese army consisting of 140,000 men with just 500 ships. If you still don't know about him or what the poop i am talking about, click here.

oh the turtle ships they are pretty ingenious. the top of the ship would be covered with a shell with spikes on so it would be virtually impossible for enemies to board.

US Army Generals Courtney Whitney, Douglas MacArthur, and Edward Almond
because they fought in the korean war.

and for the Yi Sunshin, he started with 11 ships after he was released. he was sent to jail before because of his crackpot emperor. he then started building ships and made alliance with the chinese, too bad the koreans in those days didnt have guns, however Turtle ship was technically the first "Ironclad" battleships ever in history, and was built for "fighting the muskets" because you know, shields dont block those huge muskets well, and they needed a ship to protect its ship commanders and troops more easily.

everybody stole my picks already wink.gif

Rommel, Alexander TEH GR8 (Yes, I typed that with a straight face), ghengis came to mind, but...Alexander FTW.

reasons:
1: 2nd hugest empire in history (next to ghengis, hehe)
2: he was friggen 21 or somethin' like that when he was conquering the world
3: he named like 20 cities after himself because he's just that good
4: we share the same real name ;P

Emilio Aguinaldo.

Still the coolest person in history. cool1.gif

Early in his life he was exiled from his homeland of the Philippines, for being a revolutionary. When the philippines were overtaken by the Spanish, he persuaded the American army to team up with him and try to take control of the small islands. (He lead America to think that they would get a share of the territory.) He then proceded to take over the islands and rid them of the Spanish rule. When they were all but wiped out, he united the Philippine nation and ousted the American troops as well. He was made a general for a small time, and became the first president of the Philippine republic.

Louis Botha was one of the greatest generals of the 19th century, or at least the most lucky.

Botha was a 'fighting-general' in the Boer forces during the Second Boer War. He inflicted a number of humiliating defeats on the British Army and was well known for his courage, optimism and tactical genius. Unfortunately he had to preside over an undisciplined rabble and he was more or less defeated within a year (He had 17,000 troops compared to the British 50,000 as well), although he carried on a guerilla campaign.

Has anyone mentioned Napoleon?

I agree with Heretic that Hannibal was the best and the greatest general of all time... He was the general of idealistic society.... If he wasn't for Carthage, maybe he would have been more famous than Alex the Great.

I'm not very big into Hannibal, therefore I don't know a lot of the stuff that he did, but I remember in the game R:TW, there is a quote that says something like..
"Hannibal knew how to gain a victory, just not how to use it." from some phillosopher or somebody. -10 points for Hannibal smile.gif

True. which makes Yi Shunshin with the turtle ironclad ships the strongest and the best general of all time.

I am not very sure if the last part about him saying right before he died

you know i was watching a program on the history channel about biblical prophets and judges that they were great tacticians. and during the journey to palestine the hebrews had to kill off the native inhabitants. well they went through every battle and interpreted it in millitary strategy... very interesting.
