Hello community. I am new to your website and would appreciate some feedback on how and what tools to use to create a map I have been thinking about for a while.
The map design is not really the important part. I want to make a map where units gain defence as they get closer to buildings and vise versa. So to achieve this would mean changing the units actual stats during game play. so is there any way to do this???
Yes, there is. Use protoss units and constantly set their shields to a certain amount based on their proximity to the buildings, so that the shields function as a kind of variable armor.
How do i go about that?
Do i use triggers in the plain ole' staredit or do i have to DL another program?
And is there any way to use the same kind of comands on terran and zerg units?
Sure, you can use staredit for that. It can do more than you think.
And no, you want to use Protoss units, because you have the shields to be constantly set AND hit points, whereas the onthers only have one kind of health.
The trigger is "Modify Unit Shield Points".
I like the idea of gaining defense when near buildings but do you have any more information on the kind of map this would be used for?
RPG's probably. You would want like 1,2,3,4,5 shield. Nice idea if it was used.
Yes more of an upgrading unit rather than switching units as you go.
It would make game play alot more easy.

That won't work..
If you set the unit's shield to 90% over and over and over then the unit will be invincible duh..

Test that out and you'll see that you're wrong.
He means you wont be able to damage it, but what you should do is have the shield points be low. So 1 attack from an enemy will take out the shield + some hitpoints. So like let's say you have lvl 1 armor. Max shield # is 5. So you would have 1 shield point to act as your armor. So when an enemy attacks you [Enemy damage is 5+] it would take out your whole shield and some HP. So your shield's arent invincible.
Start a tactail warfare map.
It is possible, the way i see it u have to use multiple location layers over lapping each other. Setting each location set to 1 shield. Also use switch to turn on and off the shield so a player wont have invinsible sheild.

once the shield reach zero.. the remaining dmg is dealt to health..
so it does exactly like armor..
Heh that's a good idea.
I was using it the other way, with 255 ups for shield and 3 shield points so it took seven hits before damage was inflicted.
Sorta simulating a "bullet time effect" you can avoid taking damage for a few shots but not indefinately...
You could always try making it so that there shields refresh every 20 seconds, so that people have to dedicate more to killing them as they approach closer.
