There was an idea I was toying with mentally a few months ago. We have a civil service exam for SEN staff hiring. Basically, it is composed of several essay-style paragraphs, and the quality of the responses determine whether or not we consider hiring the applicant.
I'm against this. I can write pretty well myself, but that doesn't mean I certainly will make a good staff (assuming I haven't been one already). What should determine this are the actual contents of my posts (not just the pizzazz I put into the writing), my conduct, etc.
I agree with PCFredZ. Staff selection is based off of too many factors, I don't think just writing an essay would identify the right candidates.
I never intended this to be a single determining factor for anything. Just another tool to help us sort through some things. A simple pass/fail on this isn't going to earn or lose you a staff position.
I am against this too. It will attract far too many complaints about unfairness. Staff hiring is better in the quiet way we do it now. With exams, people will be spculating what to do and what tricks there are to become staff.
I would rather have some sort of test set up where they would be given certain circumstances (such as a flame; some sort of spam; a post containing a radical opinion, albiet a permitable post.)
They would write what they would do for each circumstance.
I dunno, I think it might be a good idea to try out.
Wait! this would be public? I would be all for some sort of private test with a few members who had no idea who else was taking the exam, but a public exam would be too... Weird.
Oh wait, good question! I was thinking he meant public.
This might be a good option, but in a way it may not.
If we do use this, won't it cause some sort of huge rise in Egoism?
Not if we just tell everyone who takes it that they failed miserably, but we had to chose someone..
Make a virtual job of real SeN.
Give out some circumstances and he will have to answer what he would do, much like a school test.
IE:
1) Member posts porn
2) A person reports his own flame
3) A person reports someone who flames and flames back at him

I think an exam is better off given to anyone who wants posting access.
If a topic asks for a question in mapping you're not sure yourself in, you
a) ignore
b) tell what you know and assure the person that's all he has to worry about
c) say some random stuff so the topic starter knows his topic is being read
d) tell what you know but inform the person that there may be more to it than what you responded
Add different amounts of points (in this example, 3 for a, 2 for b, -3 for c, 4 for d), and if they can't get over a limit in the end, then deny or limit their posting access.
Better yet, give that exam for the right to post.

That's what I was talking about.

I like the idea of a membership test though. No, don't do a test for membership, because 1) it'll seem to weird and 2) it's not friendly to non-English speakers.
Make it in a few other languages? (Korean, Spanish)?
SEN could use some multilingual support.
Nobody knows more Spanish than me here except maybe Clokr_
The problem with languages is that english is the main language at SeN, if you don't know much english, it's really your problem since we can't make everyone post in another language. We could teach you english, but that's near impossible on the internet.
No, taking a test just to join is still too weird.
I stick by my previous suggestion, a test for merely posting access (so you can still download maps).
Motion seconded, let's get it coded.
Not sure if that should apply to Map Making Assitance, and surely not the Welcome Forum. Otherwise I think it's a good idea.
