So, what do ya say? I think its all about the groove. I love funk charts, and I love bands that have some knowledge of jazz theories such as twelve bar blues. Quite possibly the one redeaming thing about some emo bands is their knowledge of jazz blues.
Vocals. Especially in older songs like from the 50s and 60s. They felt every bit of heartache and pain that we do today, only they were so much smarter with the phrasing. These days, the music is as raw as the feeling it describes. But with the older music, it's spoken so much better. If they made a song now that describes what was being felt in the song "Just My Imagination (Running away with me)" by The Temptaions, it would be like "I THOUGHT SHE LOVED ME!!! BUT I WAS WRONG!! NOOOO!! WHYYY!!!! PLEASE LOVE ME OR I'LL KILL MYSELF!!!"
Words can be so powerful.
How it sounds? That falls into groove?
I'm not a big fan of lyrics, might be one of the reasons why I strictly listen to lyric-free music. Honestly, I don't really care what instrument it is, as long as I can hear the music. I tend to like fast paced music over slower music, so I guess tempo too?
The closest thing for my answer is all of the above; I listen to a lot of metal, and in metal those various aspects are all important: riffs upon riffs, bass, insanity on the drums, overall sound, vocals (not a large extent, but they still matter), solos especially, and technical complexity.
It can also vary widely within metal and other genres, but this is the criteria for about 80% of what I listen to.
I enjoy music for the way it sounds put together, but I constantly find myself picking out one part of the songs beat and analyzing it. (Like if theres a barely audible chime going on in the back, I instantly pick it up and basically determine whether or not I could play it...
) I also spend time listening to what instruments they choose, and how those instruments fit together. Vocals on most songs are pretty lame, so I pay attention to them, but not fully. I listen to rap though, because I picture the lyrics used in the genre to be treated the same way an instrument would.
I have many feelings in music. At some times I could listen to relaxing music. Other times I'm in the mood for ear-bleeding rock. Some times I could just listen to light rock. One thing I don't like is guitar solos with no other music or lyrics, freaking tics me off.
i love teh speed shift speed in guitars its ka
I look for rhythem, how the song is set up, and the way it sounds. I only listen to certain music, not all music im drawn towards.
I dont lisen to music, I lisen to whale calls, the sound of spring in the morning and the cool waves crashing on the rocky shore.
Everything is important!
Besides vocals, when the song is instrumental
Moral objection: why does this poll only apply to the junk that's popular in modern days?

As a global moderator, you have the ability to modify the poll, which leaves your objection baseless.
Pwned
For me, it isnt all of the above.
I listen to many different to genres, mainly Electronica / dance, but even in that there is a huge difference.
IE: in the genre Drum n Bass, it has fast drums and complex basslines, so you would be looking for the drums, and/or bass. In Happy hardcore (or hardcore) its more happy, with many different layers, often with helium sounding vocals. So there it would be vocals and the groove..
And im sure it changes between rap, techno, metal, whatever floats your boat.
I listen for everything in that poll in the music i listen to. i listen to alot of new stuff, but i also listen to the classics like Lynyrd Skynyrd. i think the beat is what ranks first on my list, then the message, then everything falls into place after that, the only music i try to avoid is Techno and Rap. they just tend to annoy me
mostly i listen to music for: beauty, heviness
so i look for: the guitar, te solo's, the drums, overall composition & for vocals, but taht comes last.
I just listen to the whole thing. Mainly what makes me like the song is how well the intro/instrumental is in the beginning is (since it gives off the feel for the song,) the chorus, and the bridge leading to the final chorus (aka: the build-up.) If I like all three of these components, then I like the song (in most cases.)
And also, any cool guitar solos I like em too.
It really depends on what type of song you're listening too. If it's a comedy one, I'm looking for the lyrics. If it's a country song, I'm looking for the power button.
The groove. How it makes me feel.
And the tech part. How it's put together.
I saw some useless styles
it all. its the mix of it all that makes it sound good
if you like the groove, it means you listen to something like techno. & how can you have solo's in techno music ?
Synthesizer/keyboard as lead instrument.
