One thing about Notepad, though: you can't tell it to "save as" an .ral file in a different location because Notepad doesn't recognize .ral, so you have to open an existing .ral, then just select "save" when you're done.
If you want it to have a different name, you have to click the icon and choose rename.
or you could just change "Save as type" from "Text documents (*.txt)" into "All Files" in the Save As dialog, and then write in marine.ral as the filename...
