Are there really too many subcatagories to rock music? (Heavymetal,Deathmetal,Grunge,Punk,Ska, etc etc etc) Or is it fine the way it is?
There aren't if you don't believe in them. There's a number of definite metal subgenres (and under those are more subgenres) that are hard to go without using, but a lot of other things don't need specific titles for their 'sound'.
Who really cares?
People care more about their entertainment, then their own selves.
It's pathetic.
I have
Rock
Metal
Alternative
Punk
Ska
for my catagories. Its not that many.
they need less.
i only listen to metal, alternative, punk, and hippie songs lol. =/

What about Indie?
I have as many metal subgenres as you can think of

Rock 'N' Roll
Classic Rock
Heavy Metal
Grunge
Hard Rock
Whatever genre the Violent Femmes and Blind Mellon are.
And walla. That's all there should be.
[sub]Classic Rock, Progressive Rock, and Hard Rock; anything else does not deserve 'rock' in their name.[/sub]

What about Indie?
Indie is wannabe punk. I consider most stuff in that catagory to be either alternative or punk.
Um.. This is stupid. There's a perfect amount of sub-catagories. I mean, classic rock is classic rock and hard rock is hard rock. That's just how it is.
And metal isn't in rock. Metal is metal. Deathmetal is deathmetal. Stop going so technical, it is what it is.

Acid

Emo
Indie
Screamo
Death Metal
Rock and Roll
There isn't really too many categories for rock, but I do believe there's too many subcategories for some categories of rock (for instance, metal has too many subcategories IMO.)
But anyways, the only types of rock I listen to are Alternative and Punk.
Part of the reason for metal categories is the much greater variety in metal (a few examples):
'Heavy' metal
Death metal
[sub]Florida/Tampa DM
Grindcore (verging on death)
Melodic death[/sub]
Black metal
[sub]NSBM
USBM
Scandinavian BM (old school and otherwise)
Black/death
Viking metal[/sub]
Thrash
[sub]Bay Area
European/etc.[/sub]
Speed metal
[sub]European/80's
American versions 'n such[/sub]
Progressive
NWOBHM + variants
Industrial metal
Doom metal
[sub]Funeral doom
Stoner doom
Drone doom
Industrial doom[/sub]
And so on..
Pffft metal music all sounds the same to me -_-
But then again, metal music isn't my type. The only metalish band I somewhat listen to is Slipnot.
I've said it before and I will do so once more: Slipknot is not metal, and they never will be.
WHAT ABOUT CHRISTIAN ROCK!
Doesn't deserve its own name, unless that name is "garbage."

WHAT ABOUT CHRISTIAN ROCK!
[right][snapback]436765[/snapback][/right]
I believe it's called Contemporary Christian Music or something. Most of it is more pop style rather than rock. The more well-known type is called Gospel.
Just a little bit less. I mean I see no difference between speed metal and trash metal. Well, thrash is a mix of speed metal and death metal. But then whats heavy metal? Oh god im so cunfused!
I really don't like christian music. 'cept worship songs, newsboys, and dc talk before they split up

LORD I LIFT YOUR NAME ON HIGH!!!!!!
Just kidding.

YAYEZ!!
Anyway, punk isn't rock, people. Punk is punk. Rock subcatagories include the word "rock" in them. Like "hard rock".
And like I said before, metal isnt a subcatagory of rock. It is a main genre, where there subcatagories may be added to it. ("Black metal", "Power Metal")
[sub]I would consider Punk from the 70's and 80's rock. [ New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders, Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses. ] But not anything recent that call themself punk rock.[/sub]
