Most scientists say that the universe goes on infinitely.

How do we know that??? question.gif

Space photos can only show so far.

I would like your opinions on this matter. mellow.gif

.. AFAIK most scientists DO NOT say the universe goes on infinitely.

The Universe is expanding, and basically the edge is what the Universe was at the beginning of the expansion.

It's very complicated, but you cannot see through the edge. On more information relating to the edge of the universe (READ THIS NOW OMG OK):

no. the universe is everything there is no end.

Yes the universe as we know it will end. Simply because that will be the day all humanity ends and we no longer can determine if it does or not. The universe will probably crumble into an unhospitable place for us, and when it does, I don't think we'll get to see what happens. Anyway, things will probably still be around, but we won't be able to detect them (because we won't be around) and anything undetectable does not exsist. In this simple minded way, the universe will end.

As me and Kellimus, along with Durk-A-Dur have theorised, is that the Universe is a very large and vast, round object. We believe in the big bang, and with our logic, since the big bang blew out everything (Since it was all in a small round object) it must mean that the universe is round; Thus, there is an end to the Universe (In my opinion) We also believe that eventually the Universe will get so fast, it will collapse on itself into a Neutron star like state, like a Super Nova does sometimes.

That's a pretty arrogant thing to say.. But I guess it's your opinion, and you're entitled to it

Haha! Yes! Let us turn to the all-knowing scientists for this question! I mean... we've seen what percentage of the entire universe? Oh wait, they can't even tell you that (perhaps speculate?). Sure we could blow ourselves up tommorow, but we are just one little planet (Or so the Scientists say... ). Don't get me wrong, I'm glad scientists are trying to advance our knowledge and technology but they don't even have enough evidence enough about this matter.

Who knows? Maybe one of those space probes will bump into the edge of the Outer-Space marble one of these days (Men in Black tongue.gif )

Don't think there is an end to the universe. I'd agree with mindarchon though. If you've taken astronomy, they universe is expanding and stuff is being created as it is. They use the rubber band analogy, stretching and shrinking.

I'd say is true...maybe we think that there is no end because it's so big and we can't see everything but there is a limit. galaxies are created by hot gases and stars clashing with each other.

if the universe is round, could it not be that the universe itself is what could be considered the "surface" of that "marble"?

so that its a spherical type thing, with nothing in the center, you would just travel round and round and round, this would show that there is indeed no end
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kyuubi. on 2006-02-27 at 19:20:46
i think what your saying is a theory though...there isn't very much proof of that. No one really has traveled that far...i still believe in the rubber band theory that its just still expanding..they believed that the birth of the universe started with violent events and merging/clashing hot space gas/dust together and creating what we now of today. Well all these are a theory though, no actual proof but they think this is how it began logically...

It ends. Infinite CANNOT be created.

I agree with Castaminator. There is no infinity. There is always end to something... with exception to Bush's arrogance

The Universe i THOUGHT Anyway is shaped like an O, you Keep going then you'll End up at the same Spot where you started (Not like you can go AROUND the intire universe anyway) But Yea it should be Shaped like an O, if you leave Earth in a Space Shuttle and it Actually had enough fuel to go on for about 800 years...you'd end up back at Earth again. or at least this is what i Believe.

Space photos can only go back about 13 billions years. But for the universe to go on infinitely wouldn't make sense. How could the universe expand an infinite amount in an finite amount of time? Bascailly, I cant think that the universe goes on forever, but I find it hard to believe that it just "stops" somewhere as well.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by EdAi on 2006-02-27 at 23:09:51
i agree, i mean it couldn't just STOP could it??? would it just be like a wall??

THE UNIVERSE IS SHAPED LIKE A DOUGHNUT, because, well its hard to explain, but I though it out...(I think) But, if the Universe stared as the 'Big Bang' maybe something existed before that??? So, the Universe never really 'started' and I bet my life that it will never end. It may, in theory, go back to that infintisimly small portion of mass that was at the exact moment in which the 'big bang' occured, but, I bet that it will expand again and life will be recreated and they will call it the 'A_of_s_t'. (One can wish, can't they?)

So my answer is a no.

Guess I'll have to be more blunt with my sarcasm happy.gif I was just making reference to the movie. I could actually care less whether the universe was in the shape a Marble, a Loop, or even a Question Mark!

Oh cmon, wouldn't that just be great to read in the papers, Scientists discover universe is literally a giant question mark! Then the the question would have to be, "How do you get to the dot of the question mark?" blink.gif Or maybe... we ARE the dot of a giant question mark! (Now THAT even complements many of your opinions!)

I guess I didn't make it clear last time but, there's no way of proving, most of the stuff said is based on speculation, I could sit here and make stupid speculations like the one I said above all day (although that one above DID take me 10 seconds of my brainpower to come up with).

I truly don't think that there will ever be an end to the universe, and I don't think there was really a beginning to the universe. If you think about it, if everything were to just die or disappear, time would continue on with a void, though empty, still the universe. As long as there is time, there will be a universe. I believe it's safe to say time is infinite. I don't think suddenly, time and the universe were created, just seems silly (another reason why I don't like the idea of origin given by religion). Pretty awkward, but I think that the universe has been forever and will stay forever.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kyuubi. on 2006-02-28 at 02:42:01
what we all saying are just theories or what we predict they are...they are the still theories until we can prove if its true or false...but no one has ever seen the whole universe before so it cant be explain but theories are still being created...even though i'm being taught what they observed in astronomy...but right now the logic of it expanding and shrinking like a rubber band is still what i believe in...i think that the universe does not go infinite but just expanding like how you stretch a rubber band and then condenses back later(maybe in a few million years).

I belive there is, I mean if there are millions of planets... there has to be plenty of galaxys, but it has to end after that... Then... What at the end of the universe? many questions we wont have answered, In some time soon tongue.gif.

......why what exactly? Why there is an end to the universe? Assuming that's what you said:
The topic question was directed more towards a law rather than a theory. Law would be, there is or is not an end to the universe. Theory would be explaining why there is or is not an end to the universe.

As I said before, this topic is gonna go no where. Leave this discussion to REAL scientists.

But they haven't said anything so far, so why don't we just step in? If they were to, let's say... come to this forum, talk a bit and leave, I'd still think what I said before and I'd still be talking using theories.

perhaps the universe will end after an infinite amount of time??? that would be never, but its still a possibility right??? ending after an infinite amount of time would be stretching out the end, like taping more and more rubber bands together
