The reason I say time and resources is because many teachers ONLY focus on one thing: Preparing for standardized tests. I'm against standardized tests, because we aren't standardized people. What I'm saying is that we don't all perform on the same level on every subject, so why have tests that force us to? I'll stick some proof links in here on a later edit, I'm supposed to be writing an editorial on this for Language Arts class right now.

P.S.: Please don't just vote and go, post a reply! Go ahead, say what you think!
If they gave us tests that were more on our level of education it would take more time and resources... or something like that.. I'm hungry

I fully agree with you and rodent but itwould just cost so much money if u could make an ideal test for each and every student right?
Fatal, are the initials of your school HHS?
ADDITION:
and I luuuuv standardized testing, for I DONT HAVE SCHOOL until noon this week! Go seniors!!!
06! 06! 06!
Standardized testing is very useful for being able to compare scores with other people.
That, and getting the day off from classes and homework.

No, but they will be in 2 years, and my brother's school is HHS. And what I'm asking in this poll isn't if you like standardized tests, the real question is do you think that they fairly and validly assess us.
P.S.: You wouldn't happen to live in Washington, would you, Kame?
damn. No. Ya see, my school right now is doing standardized tests...
I think they're stupid. There is no right. Standardized tests don't work unless everyone takes them. I mean, I applied for a school in Chicago, they don't give a shiz about my test, because they don't take CSAPs. Further more, its a waste of resources. I'm in a college class, and the guy that sits next to me is a teacher at one of the poorer schools. He says that because of the money involved with standardized testing, they had to cut the Teen Parent class. He says he has five students who are pregnant right now, and he teaches as young as 14.
That's sick.

Wrong. They have a test out called MAP, I have no idea what it stands for, but you usually take it on the computer and answer multiple choice questions. Based on how close to the correct answer you were, the computer would get a question with a higher, lower, or relatively same difficulty level from a database of thousands of questions. They have that program on every computer in our school.

HHS here is Highline High School...

Anyways, I agree that standardized tests shouldn't be used, because it mutilates the curriculem into stuff that you probably won't end up using in reality, it takes up to a month out of the school year, and worst of all, they're starting to make EVERY GRADE take a standardized test, even if it doesn't count for anything.

thats not what im talking about sure i know about the "MAP" but there not making
a test for each and every one of us just the standered for that grade level.
Standardized testing is a measure meant for the lowest common denominator. Logically speaking, there will always be a percentage of people at the bottom. You can't have everyone finish a race 1st. So if a test is meant to gauge the lowest portion, but they can't do anything to adjust that portion, aren't the tests futile?

Ok, I don't really get what you just said, but I'm going to guess that you don't think standardized tests are good. Something else about these tests: They are stereotyped on race and gender. For example, the new SATs are tilted towards females, and all standardized tests (or at least it seems like it) give an advantage to caucasians.
The test may be necessary, but it extremely inaccurate. Maybe someone sucks at english and at math, but is an absolute genius at something not there.
I think there should be many different tests with many different subjects, with the students choosing what they wish to be tested on. English and Math will probably be mandatory for a more complete accessment, but at least then they can improve their scores and possibly send them to specialized schools for their talent if they wish and the test is a getting-into-a-school/college standardized test.
Well, I think it's sort of dumb, because every year, at least for the last three years, instead of learning NEW stuff, we went back on RANGE, MEDIAN AND MODE!
Anyway, I like standardized tests, but I don't like taking a month to review stuff I already knew for them.
How else is the State supposed to measure if any of their new education laws are working?
I think that standardized tests are actually doing a pretty good job to measure someone's intelligence or knowledge. ACTs, for example, is pretty awesome, although I hate the 36 point scale they put here.
But this standardized testing is immoral. It is placing a number value on a person. So I will have to say I don't like standardized tests, but it is doing a pretty darn good job in America.
Standardized testing is a way to make people suffer. For those of you who didn't study before probably needs to get going. Because every test shows "ranks" and I don't think if you're in the lowest one of the 20%, I don't think theres a future for you except for McDonalds.
I took like 3 of those "MAP" test things.. one for Math, English and Science.. took a whole class period and I live in Washington... my schools initals are SFC
I really dont care whether there is Standardized testing or not. I dont need a number to tell me whether I'm smarter then anyone else or stupider then everyone else.

Again, the question is do you think it's a good use of our time and resources. Go look at Deathhawk's post, it's a good example of how someone thinks that it ISN'T a good use of time (since they're reviewing the same thing over and over).

I don't think it's doing too well... If you look at average test scores for different races, genders, and income rates, you'll see that non-caucasians generally do worse. Why, you ask? They are generally in low income areas, which means they don't go to a very good school, which means that they don't do good on tests because they don't have the resources, so when they get older, they can't get into a decent college because of test scores which lands them in a sucky job that doesn't pay much so that their kids will have to go to a sucky school too. It's a vicious, never-ending cycle that these tests are causing. The test isn't just a gauge of how smart you are, it's also a gauge of how well you're taught.
ADDITION: Also, like I said before, the new SATs are biased in favor of females.
Yes, but just barely. And for standardized testing, I don't completely agree that it unfairly labels "stupid" people with a number.
They're set up simply enough so that you do, lets say, 100 practice tests (and consiously working through them), you WILL get quite a high score. They don't require "intelligence". It's not an IQ test.
even though i'm already passed high school, i'd kinda be against the standarized testing...we should just be learning things our professors/teachers teach us instead of having them require to schools to test the students...
i just think its another part of the no child left behind thing, a way to sink public schools...on the upside of it we would like to compare scores with other schools/students...but the government wants to check how the schools are doing...if the school doesn't score in the satisfactory level, they'll turn the school into a private school with no government funding...its like blaming the teachers/professors/schools that the students failed or something like that...
if they say a school has fallen below the level they expect it puts a school to shame...
something like that puts a huge pressure on everyone...sometimes i think the government is trying to choke us...
back on topic, i'd say its useless...
well. now that i think of it standardized tests are useless. Teachers should teach us and make quiz/tests for us. There is Finals/Midterm finals anyways. Standardization is not a very good idea.
Not saying they aren't but...
How are the new SATs biased in favor for women?
I think SAT's & ACT's are good enough for standardized testing, all these other state and school standardized tests are retarded. Unlike school and state tests, SAT's & ACT's:
- Are paid for by the student (in most cases) so it doesn't cut into a school or state's educational budget
- Actually hold some difficulty (the state standardized test I took was a joke)
- Not only determine a person's academic level (which school/state tests only manage to do), but they are used for college decision-making and scholarship selections
well the SAT and ACT testing is optional if you want to take it in high school, as scoring high in it is a requirement for some college universites or something so thats not to much pressure...where no one except you gets effected.
well from what i've heard they also just reinstated the high school exit exam around the schools as if all that standarized testing ain't enough...i took when i was still in high school, but it was quite easy.
