Guys, have you notcied how EVERY map in the map in production forum is an RPG. What is with this? Can't you people make anything esle? The even funnier thing is that most people will spend more time making their post look pimp than acctualy working on the map.(before they give up on it(which they will)) Everyone wants to be the next Qpirate king or something. But every one is just re-using the same old things. You walk around killing weak units and you level up. FUN. Oh and the best is the people that say "Well, mine is original, I have a good story line." SO WHAT? Its like changing luke to john and darth vader to steve. BOOM new story line! If im rescuing some princess or getting revenge, it will all result in walking around killing weak units. (which are most of the time zerglings.) Shame on you map makers!
Some of them are the same but I think that there are many that are different and fun, even if it IS just killing things leveling up and doing quests. I find that fun. Although I agree many make a very good looking post and then just give up on making the map.
It's better to try ur best tryin to pimp it up, cuz I actually finished an RPG and it was horrible. Then, tried making a "different" one, then u criticized that mine was "not original" which meant u WANTED things to be same.
[sub]Who wants to be like qPirate King? I would rather be like Alpha. DK3 owns LoH.[/sub]
There are alot of maps that are just what you described, but there are certain map makers, such as Panzer_Kavalier, that know how to make the map fluxuate between ridiculously easy, and difficult as hell. Like Marine Special Forces: SE for example, you kill a ton of really weak stuff, then you go to advance and find yourself surrounded by a shizload of ultralisks.
Oh yeah, forgot to add:
P.S. - Of course Zerglings are first monsters. They are challenging (doesn't matter how much armor u have, they do at LEAST half of their normal damage at devastating speeds) and it's worth 50, a LOW kills and razings score, a convinent way for a level up system based on kills/razings.
EDIT: Why the hell did it double-post? Must've been lag.
Mastaa, why must you "gg" so many "silly noob clowns" as one of my friends may put it...
It's true, many RPG maps have something like that. And I personally don't play them for the story, or because I like killing lings. They don't need to have new original unit usage or wonderful stories. I play them because I like certain triggers implemented in them. And if people wanna show them off, they can feel free. However, I'd think it's easier to make a map without people asking you every day how it's coming along. (Not like I make maps, but...)

Yeah, that's the type that pisses me off...ie: another "kill 50 things to lvl up" is something I don't need.
But people still make nice ones. And people still try hard. You don't need to take a shiz on every map maker making a RPG in production...
Then again, your thread may inspire people to prove you wrong and finish their rpg ;P
How about a man where there's a reason for why u kill the freakin monsters?

"It's there, you kill it and magically get more skills to kill more stuff"
i agree. have you ever noticed that all the RPGs that have MANY pages 1-5 or so are Resident Evil maps? theres like 5 topics of RE.
That's because zombie maps are really fun when they're made right.

By "pimpin" I meant the production thread.
Some people really like RPGs. Try going to Hollywood and telling them "Stop making action movies! Can't you think of anything else?" Do you think it will work? It's true that many are formulaic, but in addition to the people who like to play them, some people just like to make them. I've made a few RPGs and I enjoyed myself. They're also great practice to learn more about map making.
But then, there are the ones with supreme suckage, but you'll find that in any genre.
Guess who's making an RPG that isn't anything like those... Well, I wouldn't be surprised if there were actually less RPGs in the maps in production thread than the rest of the things, because it only makes it look more common. RPGs take a very long time to be made, so people continue posting in it for a long time. RPGs that have been there for like 5 months, if it were a defence or something else it would probably be done already, so people stop posting in it. There probably aren't that many RPG threads a few pages back.
NO one takes 5 months to make a map. 5 months= they've given up.
1..i think this should be moved to the Null.
2..its more like Every map in production is a God damned Resident Evil map.
3..What do you have against RPGs?
, there the best type of map.

Some RPGs that are good and when the map maker doesn't have a lot of time take a very long time to be made.
I think it's rather a problem in any industry as opposed to just mapping. Like Doodan says, in Hollywood, we have and had too many flicks with guns, hot babe, fighting, etc.
Or like in the games industry, we have Maddens 2001, 2002, 2003, now its 2006... Then you have games like Halo 2, Tekken 5, Metal Gear Solid 3, Mario Party 7, Tony Hawk 20, and so on.
When I was a hard map maker I liked to try new things, whether you are surrounding a tank, building through crystals or bombing terrorists.
Innovation, it's what our parents had and what we lose.
Rpgs are THE worste type of map. Besides bounds.

I took about 11 months for death knights 3. But I was slacking off a lot. After you do 1 medium sized rpg, and 2 really big ones that u said you would stop making maps right after u made em, but didnt for some reason, the 3rd one just really slows you down motivation wise.
But generally, you're right. And I do agree with masta that there are too many people focusing too much on talking about their map than actually doing em. Posting your beta, or even worse, alpha map, on sen is a bad idea. Maps in production forum should be renamed Maps near completetion forum.
RPGs are not fun. Period. I don't know why everybody's making them though.

probably its your taste that makes you bitter on rpg maps.
on the other hand some people like rpg's no matter how its made.
besides i'm still working on my shadowlion map which i plan to make out of an ordinary rpg map by adding more elements to it like puzzles, efficient spell casting, decent music to go along with it, and more things that people would find enjoyable in a map.
but i agree with some of your saying that most of the time rpg maps don't get completed most of the time, because of the fact most people just get drowned out with other things in real life or other personal matters and making a huge rpg-project is very time consuming, and other times people do just lose faith in continuing on with their map so they just quit.
