Taboo Oasis v1.12

Suggested Players: 2-4

The Taboo Oasis has some visitors. Will you triumph its sanctuary or perish with it?

Okay guys, this is my first melee map and like always I'm open to all constructive critisism on how to improve the map. Apparently I still lack the knowledge of concepts needed for a balanced melee map so please point out any features I can fix, or need to address in future maps.

Hmm, meh. It won't let me attatch the map or screenshot... it says this error.

Here's the uploaded screenshot on an external site. It's late now, I'll try and attatch the map some other time and go through the layout of this map tomorrow.

[sub]Hmm, well, firstly. Purp's and teal's ramp is very close to the choke. Where as red and blue are really farther away. This gives the bottom an advanatge, expecially if their terran, because then they can easily take 3 expos while only defending one area. So you may want to shift red and blue bases down, and push their expo's back so its the same setup at the bottom. But for your first map, not bad. tongue.gif[/sub]

all things considered, pretty good. If you want, you can check out some simple guide to map making here: http://www.panschk.de/mappage/newsscript/v...e.php?newsid=19

There's plenty more, that's just one of the few that came to mind.

In the picture, teal doesn't have a ramp down, but It's pretty obvious where it was supposed to come out.

Mineral placement at the naturals might not be even distances to the minerals for each player, ie. look at purps and then blue's...

Usually, expansions have like 7 or 8 mineral fields, not 4 or 5. Though on my first map I made, they had 5 and a gas.

But gj for a first melee map. read that article and your next may be improved

It's too plain. Add some doodads, it really help making it look better wink.gif

Dont bother reading that whole article, cause thats not how you learn. Unless you would like to, of course.

Zycorax, we do that after map balance ;D

The biggest problem with this map is positional balance. Usually maps (any decent ones) have it so players in certain positions of the map dont have advantages.
Look at a map like Lost Temple, balanced map, most people know it. It is made so that each player can exit thier main base, and it opens right to thier nat (first exp). Then along the side of the main, farther away, is the next expansion. Each player has the same basic layout for thier expansions and how they can protect them. But on your map, units coming from the top attacking teal or purps main, can be under attack longer trying to get up the ramps.

Also, look where the ramps open to, the top players have a big mineral expansion and the others dont. The bottom players however are much closer to the walled in expansions.

Once its balanced positionally we can work on race balance, which only needs a little bit.

True, but, something simple like the gas placement is something you can get out of that.

...

Yen, the whole world has already determined that ain't true. It --almost-- is, if you look at the nat-choke setup, but look at top base and compare to every other one. =/

But back to the actual map. I gotta agree that the middle left and right-ish exps are not balanced at all when it comes to placement near other bases. Make the ramps empty evenly...maybe put them down into the walled exps?

Map overall looks great for your first try, but it looks rather dull with symmetric map and couple minerals around everywhere. You could use doodads to fill up the blank space. But nice job.
