Alright, I plan on getting a computer sooner or later. (When the time is right.)
I was thinking of buying one from eBay. Anyway, I've got a few questions.
First, does anybody here buy from eBay?
Second, ow does eBay work, I mean, I know it's an auction, but what are some bidding habbits that people have?
What happens if I get jipped?
If I were to buy a computer, should I bid on single pieces, or an already put together computer?
What if you buy something worth 600 dollars for like 1 dollar because nobody bidded on it, can the person decline the auction?

Will I save money?

Any tips?
Any answers would be nice.

Yes, I have bought things off eBay.

Bidding habits? If it's an important item, people put bid sniping programs on it that bid in the last ~5 seconds. Just throw your lot in at the last second.

Gipped? Too bad. If you use a credit card that supports a policy where you can void charges that are fraudulent, it helps.

Put together. If you order individual pieces, there's a 40:1 chance at least one won't work.

Dunno if seller can decline the sale.

It's cheaper just to use a qualified company and order parts, such as NewEgg (www.newegg.com)

I just won't trust Ebay. I could just run over to Target, BestBuy, or CostCo and buy stuff there. All the stuff I will ever need is really within 3 mile range of my house.

You can if it never hits a mark you set up before bidding starts. After bidding starts, you'd have to out bid everyone else to get it back.

Boy did I learn that the hard way... pinch.gif

Do not buy off ebay. I know people personally who sell expensive items on ebay and send a toothbrush to the buyer, not pretty lol.

Also, I have seen numerous occasions where people receive faulty/damaged hardware.

Just buy stuff from a local computer store, do not buy premade computers (they usually suck). I think another computer thread by you or someone similar was made and I made some good suggestions in that, refer to it for some good hardware choices.

I have bought some things off of Ebay, and this is all you have to know: Sometimes you get ripped off, sometimes you don't. If you were to buy a computer off of Ebay, have it put together. Either it's going to work well, and it should work insttantly, so no put together, or it might not work, so why have to throw out a million little pieces. But make sue you actually LOOK at the computer. If it's older then 4 or 5 years old, but it for under $300. I bought my friends current computer off of Ebay, so I would know about this stuff cool1.gif . Oh, and I was ripped off when buying it. I paid $550 for a $120 computer. ranting.gif

I have never had a bad eBay experience - but I've only bought and sold a few things (PS2 games, ancient laptop/word processor). My mum is an experienced eBayer and she has had very few bad things happen to her, and she buys and sells regularly.

Make sure the person you're buying from has 100% positive feedback before you bid if you want to be sure you're not getting scammed.

Make sure you bid at the last minute or someone might beat you to it.

The only things I usually buy from e-bay are swords and weapons. I myself find e-bay is pretty good, just be careful what your going to bid for and make sure you read the fine print.

Do you buy swords and weapons on eBay because they're illegal in your state, by any chance? tongue.gif

Nobody is stupid enough to jip you. Paypay is very secure and nobody has the guts to do something like that.

There are some good computers on Ebay and you can save alot of money.

I recommend Falcon computers. Theyre simply the fastest.

I have, once.

Highest bid = Win. >.>

Make sure you know what you're bidding on. I bought what I thought was a PS2 but in reality was just information on getting a free PS2 (luckily it was only 5 bucks)

Put together

For large items, there's usually a reserve price (usually denoted by the 'buy it now' price if there is one). The price must meet or exceed the reserve price for it to be sold legitamately on eBay.

The way it works is a person bids the max amount they wish to pay and it auto outbids others who bid, so basically it's whoever wants to pay the most, unless everyone just manually bids.

Looking for something a bit cheaper, but thanks. I don't think I'll be buying from eBay now -_-

I can't wait till ~June when I buy my computer XD Thanks for the input guys.

I usually tend to stay away from Ebay. Newegg.com (what DTBK posted) is what I use. It has great service and quality and also prices. That's where I buy all of my computer needs.

lol I made a 16,000 dollar computer on that Falcon site.

i tend to stay away from ebay fto buy things...it's only if you collect something or looking for something you need...too many incidents on ebay, espcially the issue about buying online game items off ebay...people get jipped and scammed doing that.you can't say you bought the item because it doesn't exist because its a virtual item and its not your property because it states in most online games is the company's property.

You know that it's hard to get scammed these days if you use PayPal on eBay? You can use a 'chargeback' facility if you've been ripped off and get your money back.

Stop lying -_-. We live in the same house, remember? You don't have a paypal account and you NEVER used e-bay.

No experience, sorry. I tend to stray toward safer buying places (and they haven't let me down yet!).

Tell your brother to stop being a dumbass. =\

And it's hard to get scammed on eBay?

Well if I ever come across 1gb of RAM for 10 dollars maybe I'll take it.

Otherwise, I don't see me making that big of purchase on eBay.

If you're looking for a good gaming computer that can handle most games, try this link
Click me!
It's the computer I have. $550 after mail and rebate, 1GB, AMD 64 Athlon 3500+ Processor (good for games), and plenty of other nice stuff.
I don't think it'll do if you want a server or anything like that, though.

(Seeing as you're looking for a good computer).
You can buy it at places like Circuit City as well tongue.gif.

On Ebay you can save money, but you can get ripped off, things like that.

If you're buying something, READ THE FINE PRINT.

People, as dragon was saying, sell PICTURES of things trying to pass it off as real, but it does say 'This auction is for the picture only' somewhere in the text.

My friend bought a camera on e-bay for about 600$ last september. E-bay said they didn't get his money. After a few weeks they found his money. The person selling it didn't send the camera. E-bay said they couldn't do anything. The bank is currently "attempting to retrieve the money".

Don't trust them.
