Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> infinity > integer ?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Do-0dan on 2006-03-15 at 23:56:52
if i asked you which is larger, an infinite number or 1, you would automatically say "infinite number" correct?

well if i told you that 0.444(repeating) was an infinite number, you would say "no shiz" right?

now what if i asked you which is larger, 0.444(repeating) or 1, what would you say :0

i hope i didnt make a fool of myself just now blushing.gif

There is no such thing as an "infinite number". Infinity is not a number. 0.4444..... is not an "infinite number".

What's to debate?

in that thread about .99999... equalling 1, you made .9999... an actual number, no?

and doesnt infinite number mean a number that has no end in value? .444... has no end in value sad.gif

.9999.... becomes a number as you take the limit, yes. My point is there is no number ∞ such that ∞ > x for x€R (that's trying to be the "is an element of" sign).

If you define an infinite number to be one without end, than an infinite number is not necessarily greater than 1.

.999... in a base .999... numbering system.
PWNT.
j/k

Seriously though, I wouldn't 'automaticaly say "infinite number"', I would go 'o_0' and ask what you mean by an 'infinite number'.

most likely .444¯ will never be equal to 1, as some other post said it has no end value.

it might true that there is no infinite number but an infinite number is pretty much defined as an ongoing process like it never stops but not necessarily a number that keeps on counting.
well if you find a slope of something on a coordinate plane and figure out the rest of the statistics it might be going on for infinity until the end of time or else you can never find the end coordinates. while we're on statistics, we can calculate how much our saving account will hold until the next millenia or so.

Is there and end to PI? I mean, this is PI with 49980 decimals.
