Staredit Network -> Ideas -> Sc version of DotA
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kyuubi. on 2006-03-16 at 00:55:11
ok, i know that Dota is one of the most popular maps played on warcraft 3 right now...i mean people i know are practically addicted to it and i've played it a few times. i have played the ones that are supposed to be Dota or a similar concept to it is already out, but they don't seem too impressive to me except for bushido shogun wars....

so what if i tried to make a starcraft version of DotA, i mean it won't be as fancy as wc3, but the same concept and maybe the same gameplay i might be able to make it. The units won't be named after warcraft 3 units, but instead its just plain old sweet starcraft, shouldn't name something it's not.

so i'm pretty much asking would people enjoy dota for sc?but i'm looking forward to making it much more fun and balanced than the ones already out there...

you'd need a large amount of items for this dota if you want it to be close to wc3 dota
it seems possible, so go for it smile.gif

yea i know but i'm just simplifying it into starcraft terms. the idea i have about items is the once you retrieve them, it can just be fuel for upgrades, but i think it would be like something that costs a little and boosts the minerals up available for upgrades(its the if you don't want to waste it getting it or upping. or at least have an item that can make mana regenerate faster(which is simple to do). level ups will make them gain minerals for upgrades.

well im still brainstorming for ideas

i've never played DOTA, only watched it once or twice so i'm not sure of all the little specifics

but my idea is for upgrading, your unit gains money for abilites(range, speed etc). that would be the first level. the second level would be the unit converting itself into it's hero version. The third level and so on would be armor and weapon upgrades.

I just thought this would make upgrading less repetitive.

lets face it, dota has already been attempted by starcraft. as far as gameplay goes it was a disaster, and the map looks like it had extensive work. you can try, but i wouldnt be too surprised if it becomes a failure. btw, dont say 'dota' next time. say AOS-Style because the word 'dota' makes 80% of warcraft 3 players angry, because it ruined the game, and stomped out good maps like Tides of Blood because it got a bunch of nubs addicted. go figure. dota infested wc3 just like fpm infested sc.

well the times it failed was that it was trying to make a game it's not like warcraft3, no matter how much you try to change it,it'll never be warcraft 3 dota, and yeah i won't plan on naming it dota, instead i'll just name it starcraft terms. just i'm going to do everything with what starcraft has available.

probably the same concept, but i plan to improve it. like making zerg and part terran vs protoss and part terran. that would makes sense since protoss and zerg are awlays on war with each other, but my ability making is my specialty. the terrain, items, and triggers are simple. just maybe the balance of it might need work.

if i do make it i'll probably name it something other than dota. probably ancients of xel naga or something...nevertheless i'm still in the planning stages....

I think there is a dota type map in starcraft
I can think of 2
Aeon Strife
and
Red vs Blue by Legacy(U)

[Edit:]Changed my mind very possible and could be good also.

I would suggest going for a more StarWars Battlefront style of gameplay. Get rid of the heroes, and put in upgrades, a constant flow of AI men from command posts that can be captured, and different kinds of units (Sniper, Rocket, Pilot). That's a map I'd play if it was made right. wink.gif

Dota can be done... but here's the big problem, and the keys to why it's such a huge success.

1)Dota can have 5v5(10 people) that means 10 people play at one time, adds to teamwork and skill factors doesn't it?

2)Dota has soo many spells, and the wc3 spell system so making it THE SAME would be disasterific

3)The items in dota do things like: deal 600 dmg energy bursts, cyclone enemies, hex enemies, stun, increase speed, and so on. Implementing the items capabilties would be a feeble try, feeble to attempt the same thing.

Now doing something similar in SC termonology... would be a big hit in my opinion.
You could very well have items that increase/decrease movespeed
(people have mastered this feat for use in sc mapmaking)
and as long as you have effects like that you could very well make a great dota>SC map.

Try doing things like basing hp on stock of items in an inventory(like each lvl u gain an hp point, and items can give u hp points as well) same thing with movespeed, and u could always tweak attacking and whatnot, it's up2 u tho.

All in all, a complete dota replica is impossible, but a good dota look-a-like and fun game is very possible. So go for it shadow! cool1.gif

well i do know that in some projects, the more you try to make it somethings its not, the more it won't be it...something you can't turn it into no matter what...

but the concept between wc3 and sc can be done, but with sc style triggers and terms. the spells won't be from wc3 but just plain hero casting abilities with starcraft spells with extra things in them. i'm not going towards wc but the concept and idea

planning abilities and spells for sc is one of my specialties which in i try to make unique, still effective when you level, and related to sc.

lets see for this of a layout...
-6 human slots, 2 allied computer comps

-3v3 ; zerg/terran vs protoss/terran

-4 selectable heros making it 8 total for each side

-abilities and items will use the shuttle system; 4 spells/abilities to use and the
4th one being an ultimate ability(i will make the spells/abilties selectable when level and upgradable)

-there will be 30 levels for upgrading

-option to buy items to increase mana regeneration rate and one time use of potions at a cost of minerals

-i will try to balance each side as it starts out and the terraining each with their perspective defense towers(photon cannons for protoss vs sunken/spores for zerg)

thats what i have for the layout so far...
but i might use the ideas on item-dependant on max current hp.

these are in starcraft terms so what i have planned is possible...but nevertheless it'll never be like dota for wc3...just maybe the ideas and concepts for it and rewritten into starcraft terms.

oh, the current versions i've seen so far does are kind of lame excluding one i like(bushido shogun wars) and not to mention a spanish-version of it confused.gif
some of them are way imbalanced and messy with units scattered all over the place but had nice concepts in them...

so anyway i'm still planning out the rest of the layout...i

Actually, I recently started on a DOTA-style-map. PM me if you get stuck anyhwere (mostly concepts.) - I might be able to help you.

Cheers!
