I've been wondering for a while, why do buildings that have build/research animations use overlays, rather than just animating?
maybe first presumption of reason is Blizzard Dev staffs were divided into Building design Team / Effect creat Team
so they each teams were worked separately
(many graphics staff of GameDevelop company are work independently)
Of course, that is could just animating self but if graphic structure be variety
then would be rather separately
Well, you need to remember that at the time SC was out, the amounts of memory available were not very large. If you're animating - you need to repaint the entire graphics, if you just put an overlay over it - you save a lot of memory necessary to repaint the original graphics.
when appears building grp on screen then fill memory as that much and when creating unit or reseaching , then add memory but if when cancled that work then return and save memory as that used much
so, other actions graphics had better make another grp and just put an overlay over that
because if animating all by self in grp frames then use that as much as amount of memory, right ?
