As you all know, in the book, fahrenheit 451, books have been banned and censorship no longer exists. I feel as though this is coming close to being our reality. Books have become minor paragraphs and some have even been burned for a specific reason (e.g.: burning of lotr books in london) Censorship is deminishing as we speak (young kids playing T and M games). I was just curious to hear others speak of what they think about these insightful issues.
I gotta read that book again...
I would post links, but I'm pretty sure RogueSci is a tad controversial for this site's content policy.
This post just raped my post count. Damnit.
Your Poll question has no logic.
QUOTE
Should books truly be shortened and censorship not be present?
Why would a book be shortened without censorship?
Or on the opposite side, have a censored book span thousands of pages.
Book cannot be censored, period.
QUOTE
The Bill of Rights
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Well, they are. What do you think an editors job is to do? Go through, and censor the book, then give it back to the author, stating that the things they censored, may not go in the book; Thus, creating a censorship.
And with the first amendment. It does not apply to books of entertainment as far as I know, because of how I just explained above.
Technically, Farenheit 451 doesn't deal with the government censoring books:
QUOTE
It didn't come from the government down. There was no dictum, no declaration, no censorship, to start with, no!
The First Amendment says that CONGRESS shall make no law. People in F451 simply decided not to read because the books were crap.
No censorship on books and no limits on books. Period.
No censorship. If you don't like the content of the book, don't read it. Don't want your kid reading it? Don't let them. Period.
BeeR_Keg, then I suppose we print out thousands of books saying how all religion is a hoax. We can write how stupid Bush is. We can do everything we want in your logic.
Not every right is going to be given out. Even when Bush himself is ignoring the rights and prisoning people for no reason.
Censorship has to exist. Without it, we will have all mature books (you know what i mean) floating around everywhere.
Yeah, it's not like rights haven't been taken away before
And I don't think books should be censored. As Kow said, if you don't like what's in the book, don't read it. But for the kids, that has to do with parenting. They'll still be able to obtain them, without you wanting them to. QUOTE(Lord_Agamemnon @ Mar 24 2006, 10:56 AM)

Actually, it was against the law to read books and if you were caught doing so, your books would be burned and you would be under arrest.
So do what that teacher did with evolution, and purposely get caught doing it. Then take it all the way down to the supreme court. Chances are you'll get stuck with a fine, but if you're up for it, go do it.
What Farenheit 451 does, will never happen.
Just forget it.
There is no problem with my logic, you have to think through it.
The editors, (AKA: Publishing House), spends money on printing your books expecting them to be sold and get profits. You are allowing them to do so, because if you don't, your book won't get published and printed. If you could pay the publishing and printing by yourself, you won't have to go through a "Private Editing" process, which brings me to my second point. That Amendment is pointed at the goverment, you see no goverment entity censorsing your books. All you see is a private publisher saying: "If you don't let me edit it, I won't pay for your printing".
don't think books will ever be banned in the u.s...they are tools for education...and if you said its in london, their laws are different, our bill of rights and laws here don't apply to them...
and besides you shouldn't believe everything you see or read like in movie...its just a sci-fi movie or a book.
i don't think books shouldn't be censored for any reason...there are certain age groups they are aimed at for...books are for entertainment, tools for learning, and business marketing for media and such...

How do you know? It seems like just about half of what the book represents has come true.

most books are just written fiction, and thats a sci-fi novel. doesn't necessarily come true. maybe its just a coincidence for some instances who knows...but for one thing you shouldn't believe everything you read or hear. reading books are primarily for learning or for pleasure whats there to stress about?
what books have you heard of that has come true?i'm not thinking right now. and some books aren't written for a fact after it happens.
and as they say knowledge is power and are they scared people will become too powerful from reading?

That is true but did you know he predicted the weirdest of things like WWII and the Vietnam war? He even predicted when he was to die and he was right. I don't believe in miracles or bad luck, but this seems to be more then a coincidence.
Books are awesome, how do you think we know so much about the past? Anyone? Cloud!
Cloud : Uh...Books?
CORRECT!
And why are books better then movies in some cases? Anyone? Cloud!
Cloud: Because they're more in-depth?
CORRECT! For a stupid kid your really on a roll Cloud!
Last question, why do people still write books? Anyone? Cloud!
Cloud: To store information and entertain people(fantasy/sci-fi/Mystery..etc)
CORRECT! Cloud you just recieved an A+!
Ok, I don't understand what your poll means.
Anyway, I don't think books should be censored or anything. What are you going to achieve from not letting your children learn about the harsher realities of life except ignorance. Thats kind of ironic because ignorance is what started it. Stupid viscious cycles...
Farenheit 451 as far as I'm concerned has already started. The books aren't fully burned yet, but I'm sure if you make a graph on how much our society is like that book its been going up at a constant rate or perhaps expedentialy, iono.

If you want to read a book that is comming true, read George Orwells 1984.
Until then, please refraine from posting.
I really don't give a crap, as it seems it's the world today. Kids are exposed to more violence and, frankly, it's going to happen sooner or later.
EDIT: But, I enjoy long books and T & M games but I really have to doubt that it's going to happen like in Fahrenheit 451.
