I have an avatar hosted at imageshack (150*107 pixels), but still cannot set it as avatar. Says its been removed because of too large size, and in the avatar settings it says:

Your avatar must be no bigger than 150 pixels by 150 pixels in size.

Does the filesize matter even if it's hosted at another site?

It's the filesize of the picture, it's the actual size.
Resize it to 150x150 and ur good
If you dont know how, get Irfanview(google search) That'll let u resize the picture.
Please thing long and hard about what u post

Aww come on, don't flame the guy, the forum IS for help.
He asked if it mattered for hosting off of websites. The same 150x150 rules apply to that.

You must just post the direct link to the image, not through a PHP file. Also, there's no way we'll let you have a 280KB 50-second animation as an avatar, so look into a different one.
