I'm going to start making a new RPG based on one of my favorite OldSchool games.
I'm having some problems staring it. After I started drawing the terrain on a square paper simulating a 256x256 terrain I suddenly ran out of space. I put only like a couple of the most important towns and i only put half the dungeons. I need more space for like 6 dungeons, and like 10 smaller dungeons for the side quests.
Is there any way to like make a map bigger than 256x256?

I might delete all the side quests, in-game guilds and stuff, but then the map won't be like Daggerfall...
I tried deleting some of the main quests, but i need pretty much all of them for the story line.
BTW: Don't tell me to draw smaller, I pretty much drawing as scale as posible and I still can't fit everything in.

You can't make a map bigger than 256x256. The height and width of a map are each stored in one byte (back me up, Clokr_) in a map's CHK file. A byte only hast 256 different states.

Nope, they are stored in a integer or WORD, so the max is 65535. StarCraft doesnt seem to support maps bigger than 256x256, atleast if it is your first game on bnet in that starcraft session.

Damn... is it posible to make a 3rd party patch, like the one DeathKnight is making to support bigger maps?

If not then I'll have to strt making them dungeons smaller and eliminsting the world map. It wil be a bit boring using only dungeons but... I might make more dungeons since I won't be using the worldmap.

there is no way you could fill out 256x256 with only a couple of towns and half the amount of dungeons (assuming it's not a number greater than 10) huh.gif

show me picture of map use jpeg converter thingy.. wink.gif

The towns are all quite big. Each town HAS to have a castle(each castle has a dungeaon directly connected to it), a shop, a tavern and a bank and guilds.

There are 12 main dungeons and they aren't small in the lest bit.
To finish the game I would need side-quests in order to achive or unlock the main quests.

BTW: Daggerfall is the second chapter in the elder scrolls saga. The prequel of Morrowind. Those games aren't small at all.

I only drew towns and stuff on a paper with 25.6 x 25.6 cm. And tried to be as scale as possible, and if my drawing was out of scale it wouldn't matter because i would have to fit in 6 more of them.

umm...reuse terrain somehow!!
i would still like to see the picture though

thats what I'm doing for my map ..haha...i'm using only half of the terrain for my 64x64 map biggrin.gif

By any way... Is it posibble to make doodads appear by trigger. If I could... I will easily use the same dungeons. I know changed some of the layout and made the sidequest dungeon a little smaller and only use two. I would then alternate batween each of the small dungeaons.
The last dungeon is in null terrain, you basicly teleport around the chambers. It appeared wrong on the jpeg sorry.

Where is that jpg?

And no, you cant create doodads by triggers, except the rock one that you cant remove by triggers :/

why not make daggerfall sequels? ex. Daggerfall Rpg Part 1, Daggerfall Part 2, etc.

I have an idea... have it so there are dungeon maps and then the world maps... have ppl dl the dungeon maps and then when they get to the dungoen you have a password that they must type in...

Arg... My post got deleted, I'll have to sumarize it.

I'll make several maps. One will be the World Map, when you get to a dungeon, I will use the load map trigger like in the starcraft campaings. Each dungeon will be a different map, plus the world map i expect over 13 maps. Anyway, when I finish a dungeon and go back to the World Map, is it posible to load it with ceratin conditions like quest done? Or will it load the map like it was starting form the begining?

Hey. how do you use the map load trigger I didn't see it in the tutorial/ map tricks and help areas and I'm having the same problem as you. If I could use that trigger then my map would ROCK. w00t.gif

The will load as if you loaded a new map. But you can make some copies: with quest 1 finished, with quest 2 finished, etc, and then load one or another.
That is what blizzard did in that zerg BW campaign where you starts with same plagued CCs that you had in the last game: there are 6 maps, with 1 CC, 2 CC, 3 CC, etc and it loads one or another.

For some reason I din't notice the set next scenario trigger in the effect menu should have looked more carefully.

Does this work on B.net?

Nope. It was made for single player only. Most notably campaigns. tongue.gif

Aww and i had such a great idea. Oh well I can just make it a single player Rpg.

Hmm... although you 56kers, will have hella hard time downloading over 20 maps and most DSL/cable with have some I guess thats the way to go.

Make lots of World Maps but with different starting conditions.

It'll be a hard map to make, extremely long time it'll take but I'm up to it.
If anyone wants to help with terrain/triggs/units etc..., just let me know I'll send you a copy of the map and see how it some out.

set next senerio is the trigger. but it wont work the way you want it to. what it basically does is sets that map to be next after victory on the current map. thats how blizzard did their campaigns.

ops i didntt see the other people tell u, o well

Interesting. I had never made a map where I would have reason to use it but... that is useful. Makes me wish there were "restart current map" triggers like the option in single player...

Damn, I just realized this Daggerfall will only be singleplayer... Unless I can somehow make it work on LAN or something. It would've been way better in multiplayer it's just too long to play alone.
Anyways yes you can load another map, just not many people use it.
