Staredit Network -> Staff Lounge -> DLDB: where do we go from here?

As we all know, there are a lot of quality control problems with the DLDB right now. Poor maps, pointless sounds, broken links and such.

Should we still bother with the little things if the DLDB is going to be made over from the ground up in SEN v5?

Here's a recent PM chain for a DLDB denial. I wouldn't care to pursue it any further.

Dear Koopa,

Your submission Elves Child RPG V1.9 (Gold) has been denied and deleted from the database. The following reason(s) and comment(s) were given.

Just edit the existing version in the DLDB, you don't need to resubmit it all over again tongue.gif

Deletion preformed at the time and date of this message, by PCFredZ.

Thanks for your cooperation,

It´s other difficult Level !!

Merely a change in difficulty doesn't make it a new map, would you reconsider?

But new Difficult Level means, need new dl? Or should noobs play xpert version? rofl.. you think like a 12 year old girl from the middleages..

and now plz, dont answer this.. cuz i wont answer any more.. my hobby is not spamming around with noobstylers..

For senv5 I plan on implementing map groups... So Diplomancy 7.5, 7.6, 7.7 (or whatever the most common versions are... been awhile) would all be under "Diplomancy 7.x". That might solve the problem up above.

As far as the poor quality and such, I'm planning on going through a lot of the old files to recheck them. I'm hoping to motivate some other people to do the same smile.gif.

I've always hated pointless sounds or 5mb+ wavs. I don't know why they get accepted happy.gif.

Well I like submitting large wavs so that people can compress them themselves, for varying levels of quality, depending on how much space they wish to waste. And there are also people who don't know how to compress sounds.

Overall though many of the sound files in the DLDB could only serve for one specific map (If even that) and should most likely be removed.

One thing about map quality that I've seen is that people see them differently. If we were to reformat the DLDB, I would suggest having a committee of members with differing views about game types. I have personally loathed some maps, yet admitted them knowing that there are those out there who love them. (Many bounds for example)

I suppose the question we want to ask, is do we want to have many respectable maps or be a resource for everything. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

One thing I've seen before in the DLDB is that when you look for the top rated maps you can only see the top 100 at most. If you click the next page button it reverts back into the most recently submitted maps. I suppose to go along with this is the fact that rating maps properly is somewhat of a hinderance. It's almost bothersome to have to download the map, then reopen the page you downloaded it from to rate it. If only there were some quick rate buttons to rate maps you've downloaded, or something of the sort to make rating maps you've played simpler. It might improve the rates of people rating maps, therefor distinguishing the maps people like more.

Exactly.

The current DLDB already tracks what files you downloaded. I was going to set up the new on the same way, but actually use this information more. That idea you posted would be another excellent way to do that. Combined with AJAX, rating maps would be something very, very easy.

On a more immediate note, what do y'all think I should do with the mapper who tried to submit another Elves Child RPG (see original topic post)?

I'm unsure of the amounts of changes that was done. Like Diplomancy 7.x, people perfer some versions over the others, even though a new version is, hypothetically, releases to fix bugs, balances issues, etc. Other maps have the same name, but are almost totally different.
If both his maps are seperate entities, I would go ahead and accept them both. It would be hard to tell without extended playing of them both.

I don't like his attitude though. Use your discretion.
