Staredit Network -> Lite Discussion -> Apple Unveils Software to Run Windows XP
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TERRAINFIGHTER on 2006-04-05 at 14:06:59
Mac users ever wanted to run windows programs?, windows programs don't run as well on macs?

How about now?

QUOTE(yahoo news)
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Apple Computer Inc. unveiled software Wednesday to help owners of its new Intel-based Macs run Microsoft Corp.'s rival
Windows XP operating system, despite the computer maker's insistence it won't assist such efforts.

Apple's new "Boot Camp" software, a "beta" test version available as a free download, lets computer users with a Windows XP installation disk load that system on the Mac.

Apple shares rose nearly 8 percent in midday trading.

"It makes the Mac the most versatile computer on the market," said Tim Bajarin, a tech industry consultant at Creative Strategies.

Bajarin said the move should lure Windows users who "had their eye on a Mac but knew they could not run their favorite Windows programs on an Apple-based computer."

When Apple introduced its first computer based on Intel Corp. chips in January, the company said it had no intention of selling or supporting Windows on its machines, though it has not done anything to preclude people from doing it themselves.

Apple said Wednesday that stance remains true, yet the new software will ease Windows installation "by providing a simple graphical step-by-step assistant application."

"Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple's superior hardware now that we use Intel processors," Philip Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said in a statement.

Indeed, for months, hackers have been diligently working on programs to let users of Intel-based Macs switch between the two competing operating systems.

Apple turned to Intel chips, the same ones used to power most PCs using Windows, after saying its previous suppliers, IBM Corp. and Motorola Corp.'s spinoff Freescale Semiconductor Inc., couldn't meet Apple's needs for faster, more energy-efficient chips.

But the Intel-based Macs continued to run Apple's own proprietary operating system.

Because Windows is much more dominant, Mac users don't have access to many software programs written only for Windows. The switch to Intel chips lets users load Windows onto a Mac computer, without the need for emulation software that slows performance. But until Wednesday, the user needed some technical expertise to pull it off.

The Boot Camp software makes it easier to install Windows and lets users run either Mac
OS X or Windows when they restart their computer.

Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore said in a research note that Apple is likely to grow its worldwide market share beyond the current range of 3 percent to 4 percent, while American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu described the announcement as a "significant game changer."

A final version of Boot Camp will be available as a feature in the upcoming Mac OS X version 10.5, code-named "Leopard." Apple said it will preview Leopard in August, but it hasn't yet disclosed a release date or price for the upgrade.

Apple shares gained $4.77, or 7.8 percent, to $65.94 in midday trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market, while Microsoft shares rose 4 cents to $27.68 and shares of Intel rose 3 cents to $19.33.

I dont have an Intel-Based Mac (Believe or not, Im not really sure how it works or what it is), but that is pretty damn awesome. (Im fine with my Mac, but if these Intel-Based Macs are still as damn good as the regulars, Ill make sure the software is the first thing I download)

This officially makes Mac better than all of your damn windows, haha... What do you have against Macs now?

plenty of things, if a virus gets into one of those macs a mac virus OR a windows virus could pretty well destroy it

too portable, I like my computers nice n limited maybe forced to be at 1 wall constantly and use more power, but don't need recharging tongue.gif

There are no such thing as Mac viruses, and Windows viruses wont affect a Mac, smart one.
ANYWAY, even if there was, Windows get viruses too, oh great wise one.

And what do you mean portable?! It doesnt have to be a laptop.

Stop trying to come up with ideas to bash Mac. Admit it, we won.

What I meant is, if they run on windows wouldn't macs suffer from the same virus's windows has? (like software corruption)

okay...fine, macs win cry.gif crybaby.gif

So...
I can play Windows games on a Mac?

The only thing that Macs don't have is a low price, and replaceable hardware.. (They do, I think, but no stores around me sell it sad.gif)

And I want an AMD based Mac!

I hate the setup of Macs, its horrible. But if Macs were the winners here, how come they had to install their COMPETITOR's software to their computers? Seems more to me like Microsoft is taking over Mac's. tongue.gif

Im lost by what you mean, layout? You mean the icons on the right and the dock?

And their using a program to use Windows programs on Mac just so you guys can shut the hell up. Stop bashing Macs, it's useless. We have better graphics, we have better programs, we have more features, were more secure, we dont crash, and Im damn sexier than you.

Excuse me? You didn't know? Didn't get the ole' news flash?

Windows sucks. Unless you want a machine that crashes (Most of the time, alot) and gets viruses.

But you know what, you're right! You're so right! I'd love a machine with the dumpiest graphics that ever crawled out of Bill Gate's, or any other fat b-st-rd's ass! And don't forget the amazing (and convenient) features it has, with the um... whoops, wrong system...
That's okay, I'll always feel safe roaming the internet worrying about a virus, or my computer crashing on me. And don't forget about the great speed of windows! I almost feel like I could put this thing in a race (In the seinor center)!!
And I love making lame and envious insults that make no sense. I mean, "Gay fancy graphics" is the reason I hate Mac! Don't forget that "Mac sucks", that puts up a VERY good argument!

Windows is a sin.

Yeah, but now there is more people who will buy Macs, because there is more reason to. People who were reluctant to buy Macs because they want a Windows OS can now do what they wanted tongue.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by warhammer40000 on 2006-04-05 at 14:49:42
Exactly. Its just to encourage the people who would miss their Windows programs. (Why you would miss them, I dont know, but eh.)

How can you tell us to stop bashing Mac's when you've been bashing Windows this whole thread? tongue.gif

When I was talking about the layout, I meant like the desktop and such. I'm not sure though, it might've changed with newer versions of the Mac, because the Mac's in our school are very old.

What other features does Mac's have that Windows doesn't?

This is interesting. I wouldn't mind being able to run the majority of games on my Mac. Too bad I have a G5 and not an Intel-based machine.

Of course, with Windows comes all of Windows' security holes, memory leaks and the like. Hopefully Apple's robust hardware can cope with the strain...

Just remember - the OS X partition would be for anything Internet-related, while the Windows partition would be for gaming.

Just to some up the discussion about virus,s macs doesn't have as many,

windows computers have a bunch since most virus makers target windows with them being the majority, but mac virus's do exist

ADDITION: don't talk too much about windows, their not nearly as bad as your claiming they are

Windows sucks. Unless you want a machine that crashes (Most of the time, alot) and gets viruses.

1. windows does not crash alot, I'd know cause I've only had this one crash only a few times, and thats when I made some software changes (like buying the wrong kind of ram, it didn't work with the system)

also, you dont get virus's very often with windows, its pretty rare tongue.gif

Mac OS X has 0 viruses, if I'm not much mistaken. Previous versions of the OS had some vulnerabilities.

There is 1 trojan, but it has already been contained and only affects OS X 10.4.

Windows has thousands upon thousands of viruses.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathawk on 2006-04-05 at 17:01:13
As long as you have an up to date anti-virus, and know what you are doing, you're pretty safe. And I get all of my up to date anti-viruses for free smile.gif

And for Macs, yes, they run better, but they cost MUCH more than what a PC costs. And again, not much hardware is compatible with the Mac.

I'd still rather have a Mac, though.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by dumbducky on 2006-04-05 at 17:07:00
It may now be possible to get a virus on a mac with the windows software. Did you ever think of that?

Basically, you just said that that macs are better completely based on opinions.

My windows never crashes. Its cheaper.

I've never actually used a mac so I won't say that windows is better.

It's too bad that both GRUB and LILO pwn it.
(GRUB if you want functionality and LILO if you want nice interface.)

The reason theres no viruses for OS X is because there's too few computers running it to efficiently produce a botnet. I dunno why everyone thinks macs are invincible.

And for the new intel based macs, all you need to run windows programs is Darwine.

I am aware of that - I could quite easily write a UNIX executable in the Terminal which would wipe all the files off a computer running OS X. That wouldn't be a virus though as it wouldn't be able to propagate or infect other computers.

Besides the average mac is overpriced by at the very least $200.

Methinks to mention that a Mac running windows isn't too much different from a PC running windows. Same windows software bugs (if not more due to the hardware), same susceptibillity to viruses. Plz tell me how this is better?

No.

Viruses work like this:

Virus walks in, finds system32.sys. MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH.

Game over.

In my opinion, Macs are good to run programs on (Word Processing, Digital Media, Digital Animation, ect...) while PCs (Windows) are used to run games.

Well, except one thing Kellimus said. I think a virus would have a hard time finding system.sys when it doesnt exist. Macs are built differently, get it? They're secure, and they're way different than Windows.

I meant for a Windows based computer. I've really never heard of a Mac crashing, or getting a virus. Only the software being run crashes ;p

I tested out that Mac today. Strange shiz. One button. Right icon alignment. Left side of the window to close shiz.

My school computer lab has mac's but I dont think those really count as a computer because they are so shizty!

I really wouldnt know which is better but it seems like mac's are that doesnt mean that because they are better you need to go buy one I sure as hell am not

It still is kindof cool that they are crossing paths but how did Windows let mac do that?

Mac + Windows = Mandows
