Staredit Network -> Lite Discussion -> Subconscious Racism
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2006-04-10 at 09:41:53
I recently heard of a study where researchers at Harvard are investigating whether people discriminate against certain groups subconsciously. I went to the site and took a test, which told me that I had a 'moderate preference for white people over black people.'

I found this quite unsettling, so I'd like to see if others get similar results:

https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/selectatest.jsp

Go to the above link, then choose the 'Race IAT' button. Follow the instructions, finish the test (10 minutes max) and post your results here, along with your thoughts on the question of subconscious racism/discrimination.

You can take some of the other tests too if you're interested.

Personally, I think that a lot of people here are going to favour white people over black people - there must be something in society which ingrains a slight preference for people of the same colour skin as you.

strong preference to european americans than to african americans.

i made a lot of mistakes when those african/american & good/bad got mixed up

allthow i cant say that i don't like them.

i think that we are all born with a bit of hatered/not understanding to other rases becawse they don't look the same & seem "new" to us. it's first impression

Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for White American compared to Black American.

I believe that this test not 100%, as I show no natural preference towards whites or black because I am none of them, I am hispanic.

I believe that, at least myself, got that conclusion because I was already accustomed to White and Good being on the left, and black and bad being in the opposite side. It was almost automatic when I hit the keys, but when they switched the categories I strugleled not because I mixed the photos and words, but because I kept hitting the keys thinking that the categories were like the previous round.

If it would've been the other way around, black and bad start at the left, I believe that the outcome would've been different.

You're probably right, Beer.

I got the same results as you BeeR, and I agree, I think the results had more to do with being used putting them on that side.

I dont need some test to tell me that I am a pretty racist guy I dont even mean to be usually just I have had events in my life that led me to be how I am

Well the link is taking forever to load so I'll just say some stuff now. I'm guessing more people would be more hesitate around black people, since (No sterotypes or any kind of offending speech intended) most black people listen to Rap music where they talk about shooting down people it's sort of hard not to point towards people who say that. Appose to more popular music with white people which is basically a lot of whining.

But I haven't taken the test yet so I don't know what's on it.

Couldn't they get a faster server? I've read the entire page and typed this post before its done loading.

Page isn't loading for me, I'm getting some sort of error.

I got an error, and then it worked for me the next time.

According to them, I have a slight bias to white people. Which doesn't surprise me.

Yay, it finally worked! It appears I have a moderate preference to African-Americans.

It's weird how the page isn't working for some people - it works for me every time.

Do you think that growing up in a very 'white' or 'black' environment (like only socialising with white people while growing up and stuff) could have something to do with our implicit attitudes?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by KaboomHahahein on 2006-04-10 at 17:10:38
Yes I do admit I am subconsciously racist. Don't tell me you aren't because there will always have a tiny bit of it in you. I don't really express it or have it at such a high degree but there is always going to be a tiny bit.

I think that so long as you're intelligent enough to look at your own personality from an objective viewpoint then you can prevent any prejudice from affecting your judgement.

I remember I've done this test before. I think there was a topic on this again here at SEN a long time ago. I tried to do it again this time but it took too long again :/

Stupid link decided it wanted to drop down JUST as I clicked.. I tried going back but it gave me an error.
I am not doing that again sad.gif

farking link.

Answer: 'The result could not be determined' means only that, for one of several possible reasons, the data produced in your test were ones that cannot be interpreted confidently with regard to automatic associations. This is different from a result that shows little or no association, which will be reported to you as 'little to no' automatic preference/association (not as 'could not be determined').

I just suck at using a keyboard. Although, I know I have a concious fear of black people =\

Or rather gangsters.

I can agree on that. I'm not around black children my age very often.

I recently made a black friend at school, me and him make black/white jokes alot.
Here's an example:
The Black Hulk, a huge towering, muscular black man who turns into a little scrawny white guy with a nerdy voice.

I try not to be, but I think I may be. I think I am alot of things, and I also think that it is because I think about them too much. That is where the word "Green" gets placed in my head. wink.gif
(I don't do anything at school except think about whatever random thing comes into my head. 7+ hours of thinking and deciding.)

That gives no justification. If you read, it tells you they are switching.. You can't justify your error because you "were used to it"

Actually, from my understanding, it's just a test to see how fast you can associate words and pictures with the choices they gave you. Then the part where they had you fill things out, is where it actually decided your preference.

But using excuses such as "i'm used to the other way" (As Beer said) is no reason to say that the test is not plausible, and is faulty.
