Staredit Network -> Ideas -> A Defense Map...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Apocalypse_18 on 2006-04-20 at 13:44:33
Hi. I had an idea when I used to have Starforge on an old computer. It wasn't exactly originality at its finest, but my firends and I all came up with it.

It was supposed to have a story to it, about a man named Michael Stravich, who worked at a zoo. The zoo was out of town, there were too many smog issues in the large city, so it was closer to a smaller town. Micheal lived in the town with a few kids, all of which moved out, and now he is alone with a single wife.

Later on a job, he and his team were to capture a rather large python, that locals had been complaining about. Though the python was actually within Africa, Michael convinced the higher-ups to get that snake. It would be a great new attraction for the whole world. He succeeded.

Returning home, after successfully catching the snake, he was placed in a very powerful strong cage. The python had been having troubles with being captured, he broke out of almost anything the explorers tried to put him in.

Days later, reports around the world were speaking of crazed animals within Third World Countries. Across Africa to Asia, reports were coming in. Gouvernments already considered those countries to be useless anyway, they had no defense no healthcare, so what was the reason to help them and keep them alive?

More and more missing people were reported each day.

Hearing these reports, micheal thought a moment. The snake was a rather crazed animal himself?

researching earlier reports, he found that the earlier animals who had been reported insane, were all part of the python's diet. Horrified, Micheal knew that python could attack just about anything. But why did everything survive? Why wouldn't he eat his prey, rather than let it excape?

It couldn't possbly have been that intelligent to raise it's own pseudo offspring could it?

Micheal wouldn't risk it. He ran with a shotgun to destroy the animal, but too late.

The creature was no where to be found, and the cage had a hole six feet thick.

Micheal couldn't tell anyone but his family to get home, for they were all going to die soon. His children returned, and Micheal held a meeting with the small town.

"I've made a mistake," he spoke. "A mistake that would have earned me the death penalty a thousand times over. I have brought the misfortune of Asia, of Africa. I have brought here, to America."

Notifying America of a world crisis, he told them that he believed there would be a spread of death throughout the world if the animals weren't stopped here.

The army had spread out troops over a huge area, people were to evacuate, the army was tied up with al of this.

Micheal knew, the first place those animals would come to, would be around his town. Getting military caliber weapons, Micheal rallied the town, and decided that he would make his stand there.

First, he had to go to the zoo, and check if there were any other animals there. if so, they would be killed. Immediately.

The zoo was deserted.

Returning to the town afraid, disheartened, and angry, he fortified his house (the richest of them all). He received word that the army would arive whenever they could with help.

Gathering his family, friends, and weaponry, the town awaited the arrival of potential doom.

So that's the story part of it, and I hope I won't bother using all that in a briefing...but it's my basic idea, or well my story.

______________________________________________________________

Basic idea: Micheal stravich and family must hold their ground for a long time, until the army arrives to aid them. When they arrive, the players will be suggested a choice. They could evacuate, and have their lives saved, or continue fighting, and destroy the infection itself. Taking the first choice would give them the normal ending. The second, they would risk getting the bad ending** (they lose) but if victourious over the infection, they would get the good ending***.

______________________________________________________________

Now. here are some of my requisites:

-4 human players

-2 computers, one allied (army) one enmy (the animals)

-3 endings, with sub-endings depending on which heroes died.

-Human players race will be mainly Terran, as well as the army's. The Animal infestation's race will be Zerg.

-The players would be defending a "house". Various rooms, 2 entrances. Each player will be assigned a specific area. The animals would attack each area one part at a time. Areas would be: Backyard, rear part of house(P 1) Front lawn, front part of house(P 2) Top floor (P 3) Basement (P 4). P1 and P2 would be attacked simultaneuosly, and if P1 is broken throuh, the animals will attack the top floor. If P 2 is broken through, the animals would attack the basement.

-Players would get civilians automaticly through a timer, and would get them as bonus via killing enemies. It would balence out. Teal and purple won't get much action for awhile, due to them defending the final parts of the house. Therefore, they would get civilians faster via timer, than red or blue, because they would be fighting.

-Weapons: Throughout the map, there will e beacons with weapons on them. Marines, Ghosts, Firebats, are common, while Vultures, Goliathes, SCVs and Tanks may be less common. Players will not be able to build bunkers until they ally with the army. Bunkers and Missile turrets will be automaticly placed.

In some areas weapons will be limited, so when all the weapons of that beacon are gone. In other areas, weapons will be unlimited, but it ocmes at a price. I.E. Red is under attack and seriosuly needs troops. the unlimited troops are in purple's basement, so if he uses those troops, it will take time for them to reach the front line.

-Speacialty weapons will also be on the map. They will usally be inaccessable as movable units, and will be placed upon a ledge or on terrain which gives a strategic advantage. A hero will be given to each player, though purple shall have a second.

-An idea came to me. If the house defenders survive, and they choose the [Fight the infestation!] option when they reach the army...Have the army have a building where you use probes and asimilators to extract gas. Using gas, you purchase men from gateways (no DTs or HTs). Players won't be allowed to purchase probes, nor additional gateways, and building anything will take time.

Thanks for taking time to read this post. Because of a few of you guys I've been motivated to start creating again.

Questions? Comments? Please please reply! smile.gif (and forgive the spelling errors)
I may have forgotten something and I'd be happy to fill you in!

wow, that has to be the weirdest stroy i have ever read. something about the prey of the python and all of a sudden jumping to something about pseudo offspring.

anyhow, i like your idea of multiple endings, but you should keep in mind thatno one will go for the second ending unless there is a secret at the end or you have an incredibly amazing storyline, which you don't have.

Well I'm going to try for some character build-up, and I'm certainly going to review that story. I really do want to have it RPG-esque with some conversation.

I tried making it as un-Resident Evilish as I could. Anyone could come up to me and say "OMG TATS LIEK REZ EEVUL!!! ONLY WIT ANIMULS!" but Resident Evil on SC (the survival type maps stuff) didn't have as much character build-up.

Granted I might not have the "incredibly amazing storyline" but come on, this' S.C.

Personally though, I know on StarCraft, people don't read briefings much...

Maybe I could give about a five minute prep time, during then, I'll have the storyline background?

I really want to make this map a success, and I need more opinons please!

Here's something: make the gameplay change drastically if they change, so it's not the same thing. If people are bored at the end of the first half, they have something to look forward to. Also, it would be funny if when you choose the easy ending you start to fly away in a dropship but it crashes and you all die.

Your story sounds a little bit random, but it seems alright. It IS a very long intro, however... I don't think anyone would bother themselves to read it.

The gameplay sounds alright. You need more weapons than you've listed, however.

I intend to make this map hard. I'm going to try and make it so you cannot have a perfect defense. When people get the ultimate defense, they get bored, I took this into account as i was thinking, and did not explain t much. I'll get a litle more in-depth.

See, my whole idea in this map, is to make it all dependant on your men.

The enemies will definetly break through at one point, and they will all be very tough to kill.

I've thought of the map alot more lately, and I have more new ideas, but my scheme for this map is like this:

You will have some bunkers under your control, and you will not. you will have at very most, 3 bunkers able to hit a specific spot of enemies coming at you.

Using unarmed civilians, you can take on different weapons at different locations. anything you can take will have a white beacon near it. so, your civilians not only become marines ghost etc. But by using them, you command new and stronger weapons. These weapons, will mostly be in a set position (sniper rifles in higher spots, some floor traps within walls.

In places where there are barricades, I'm goiong to have trigger commands to have the melee fighters engage the barricades, so then the hydras will take on those who are shooting them.

I've made this game, so that no matter how many men you have, it's only a house, and therefore, there's only so much room. I plan to keep the house fairly congested.

As for what happens later on in endings, I've expanded on my idea:
3 standard endings: one for defeat, one for retreating when you reach the army base, and one for completely owning the game. These endings may have smaller sub endings, if one of the heroes dies during the game, then the endings may have to do with that hero as well, as a side thing to the main point of the ending.

I want this to have an RPG feel. Each player has their own hero, with their own comments. There'll be comment for alot of things, such as getting a weapon, having your hero die. Even bringing your hero to places may have him trigger memories from his past as he speaks about them.

Gameplay would change if you ocntinue to fight at the army base.

-upgrading weapons, armor.

-more units to get (Army tanks, army weaponry) However, to get to fly things or pilot tanks, you need to send your civs in and they will receive a crash course tutorial on how to operate them. This simply means, they won't be able to pilot the macihnery right away, it'll take a minute or so.

- more enemies to defend against (especially in the air)

-While defending the army base, you'll be constructing a strike force at the same time. If you want your unit to be on the attack squadron, you send him to a beacon and he will be gone for a time. You'll have a single shot with your teamates to bring down the enemy. If it fails, you lose.

-I took a cool idea from a certain video game.
Say your hero is badly hurt, and medics aren't enough to heal him (heroes have 2000 life). Bring your hero to the medical tent. From there, you will be diagnosed of your injuries, and you must choose units to heal that injury. Each hero will have their own bed for their hero.

I'm going to put this map into production. I'm so psyched about it.

Anyone elses additional ideas would helpful.

.........OMFG THAT IS THE MOST AMAZING IDEA I HAVE EVER HEARD!

I love the plot and story, there is noway you can get bored of something so random, sounds like a great idea, I mean you get how defenses get boring, once you get a good def its over, if you can pull off making it just a lil too hard then it will be perfect. I'd like to help out however i can, with ideas, testing etc.

Im Tornac@useast and I love the multiple ending thing, I for one would continue fighting after I'd seen what happens when u leave. I actually made a post a coupla days ago about if a map had multiple endings it would be great lol biggrin.gif

PS that idea where you retreat and the plane crashs is great, kinda like HAHA you pussies your still dead! w00t.gif

Mmm...

perhaps it could be randomized?

I could have a wannabe-random trigger, that would determine if your ship makes it out or not.

Though, it still wouldn't be as good an ending. smile.gif

Thanks Tornac.
When I begin to work on this more I'll inform you. I'm unable to go on Battle.Net due to my CD Drive being fragged.

Of course, I'm open to any ideas, however crazy, because they may lead me to more things to fill the map up. Even if the idea's weird, it might lead me to something like your idea, I'll try to imput it.
