Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Fight in Ontario

All over the news lately (in Canada), there was a story. Apparently, a few weeks ago, a builder from the Capitol region of Ontario (where I live) moved to Northern Ontario and started to build houses on Indian land. The indians started to protest because, obviously, he was invating their ancient tribal terriotry, but then again, they hadn't used that land in over 100 years, so they had no need for it. Just today, thousands of officers surrounded the area trying to stop any fighting. Who's land is it? The indian's, or the builder's confused.gif

If it's a sovereign nation's land then it's their property, or I would assume as much..

Canada has a relatively large proportion of its land area set aside for natives, doesn't it? Nunavut and everything.

Indians win, no doubt about that. If I recall correctly, the Canadian law system is similar to that of the US, which means if there was already a law to set that land apart for Indians, then under violation of that law, that guy is screwed.

IMO, land belongs to no one-its simply who controls it and who doesnt.
everyone worries too much over stuff and add certain places 'official rules' to the honour system. but what it really comes down to is (quoting Pirates of the Carribean because its acualy right) what a man can do, and what a man can't do. so much indescision comes out of cases like this that it could easily lead to 'who has more money and is cared about more by the government'. and its not like governments always go with what they say. corruption has been a problem ever since the first kings of ancient Sumer came to power. there are so many possible outcomes of this situation, its hard to say.

it's the indians land. nomatter did they use it or not. if you didn't use your car for a month it doesen't mean that someone can take it away.

It's the Indians. The dude is trying to annex them. And I do believe that Annexing is illegal now days.

If the Indians own the land, they own the land. Someone else can't come in without their permission and start building stuff on it.

That's what we did to Hawaii, and most the Western States.

It's called Annexation smile.gif

Annexing is not illegal, hell, Puerto Rico is still an annexed territory of the US, we're still a US commonwealth.
nobody can tell you that you can't annex this or that, the problem is that the general public would be mad at you because of the supposed "Inhumanity" and "Broken Civil Rights" going on. It's only a wonder that nobody has claimed Antartica and it's oil rich fields. Basically WWI halted this process and the great Depression made us loose all interest.

There are no laws stating that a country can't annex anything else, but there are laws stating that citizens cannot do certain things, and this is one of them.

IT belongs to the indians. Just like Jammed said, if you dont use your car for a month, that doesnt mean someone can just paint it with Rabbits and take of the wheels.

I'm assuming the land isn't actually owned by the natives, its just the land they used long ago. If so...
Its the builder's.
The economy and the people who will be living and working on that newly developed land are more important. I'm not saying the natives are unimportant, I'm just saying they are big winny babies.
"OMG MY LAND THAT I DONT REALLY USE OR HAVEN'T LIVED ON FOR 100 YEARS IS BEING DEVELOPED AND WILL BOOST THE ECONOMY AND PROVIDE HOMES AND JOBS FOR OTHERS! I MUST STOP THOSE EVIL WHITE MEN!"
Basically, thats how I look at it.

A month is one thing...
If a car was sitting on the side of a road, and every day I passed by it, and after 100 years I haven't seen it move or anyone go it in, I would take it.
