Allright, for all the sci geeks and nerds out there, take a look at this video:
http://media2.foxnews.com/040606/040606_fr_tobin_300.swf

and if you want the details, take a look at these links:
http://www.defense-update.com/products/t/trophy.htm
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/04/12/trophy_system/
http://www.blackanthem.com/scitech/military_2006040302.html

happy.gif So...

Anyone want to take a gander as to what the countermeasure is specifically?

If you play the video slowly, I can't see any noticable difference, other than the fact that it appears that it is launching some sort of countermeasure, but what specifically - I can't tell.

Or is it not really launching a projectile?

EDIT: Yeah, it is launching some sort of projectile, if you slow the video down enough, its ever so faint, but you can see something clearly hitting the RPG...

so the question is, anyone wanna gander on what kind of ammo it uses?

I have no clue, but that's really strange though. I thought it was going to be an actual force field, protecting vehicles from anything, though tongue.gif

It's basic science.

that is old news dude. the russians created a kind of system like that in the mid 80s. is was called "Drozd" (thrush). then, in the 90s they creaded a new one, called "Shtora" (curtain)

the method is easy. when an RPG or a missile is flying at it, it's radar spots the missile (target) (it detects the speed - all objects like birds are not understood as targets, becawse they do not fit in the speed limit). then it automatically (cuz human reaction is too slow) turns the tank turret to the side from where the missile is flying. then, a special projectile is shot in that direction (it doesen't 100% calculate the position of the missile, it just says approximetly +/- 1 meter). this projectile flys a bit & explodes in some distance from the tank. this projectile is made so when it explodes it fires like a shotgun in the direction at wich it's flying- a lot of small fast shards hit the rocket, making it explode not in the correct range. (if you didn't know, to penetrate the armour, the rocket must explode in about 30 cm from the target. this is needed to maximally form the penetrating jet, but that's a different story)

btw, if you stand near the tank you can get kileld by this system.

i can tell a lot about Chineese system of protecting a tank from missiles, but i won't make a topic for that wink.gif this is just REALLY OLD news. the Chineese made a fundamental breakthrough, i think.

Yeah I though it was actually a force field and I was saying "Yes it is like science fiction" but it wasn't really a forcefield. Pretty cool though.

Well it apparently is simillar to a force field, becuase nothing can come within an X foot radius of it. Isn't that basically what a force field is?

I personaly think this is bs. But it may be true, iono.

Perhaps they do have a technology like this but they are just way over exadurating it. The military tends to do that a lot.

that is not BS for about 20 years in other countries. the US just didn't use it, just like they didn't use the Active protection method.

Did you not hear it in the begining? RPGs are the second leading cause of deaths to US troops. Having those things to help us will save some lives.

It doesn't seem as much a "force field" as a point defense system.

I agree with voyager, it seems more like that stuff. And if the japanese got it first, was it used by them?

the Japaneese can PREVENT launching of missiles with their new system.

that's what i'm trying to tell in this topic: it's old news for the military world, it's something new only for the US...
