Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Over Population. A world threat.

As you all know medicine has advanced GREATLY in the past 5 or so decades. Infant mortality rate has dropped signifacantly throughout most parts of the world.
As you spin the globe the effects vary from nation to nation. Atheist and socialast societies are leveled population growth. However the populations of third world countries has dramaticly shift towards a climb. So people keep porkin' and their children are living longer...

That's what it comes down to.

The affects can be enormous. Out of the 80 million or so people born a year almost 90% are born into poverty... The rich countries are stable thus MILLIONS of imagrants come to various rich countries annually. The imagration fludding has casue much harm to our society and to Britains society.

Personally, I think it will sort itself out. These are the scenarios I can see:

1. Cataclysm: The population continues to explode. Humanity fails to react to control the situation and war, famine and general destruction bring the population crashing back down again.

2. Adapation: We adapt to an increased population with advanced farming methods and strict controls on resource-wasting. We will also build upwards rather than outwards (like in Japan). This will tide us over until the population growth slows down in rapidly industrialising countries such as China.

As for the cultural impact of immigration in Western societies - we'll just have to live with it or turn people away at the borders. Or maybe all first-gen immigrants could be put under the control of the State if things get really bad. The State would then be responsible for feeding them a staple diet, in line with the rules on resource wastage. Maybe we could culture plant cells en masse, give them some flavouring and start handing the gloopy product out as emergency rations. Eating plants is very energy efficient.

I see option 1 as a more likely outcome. People don't think ahead, they are for the most part greedy, selfish, and short-sighted. Just look at the crap happening with petroleum.

I think #2 is going to happen. It'd be easy for USA to do stuff like that, because it's already done in Japan.

And yes, the world is overpopulated. We should try to inhabit Antartica, we should be able to now -_-

There is no such thing as overpopulation you twit.

If we were to spread out, there would be no such things as Metropolises.

it's too expencive. who would want to live there?

the only way is up. we can't "spread" as kellimus said, cuz people want to live in cities, not countryside.

You seriously can't see a situation where there is too much people on the Earth?

And yes, it is expensive, and nobody would want to live there probably, but if we could ever find a way to make life livable there, and maybe cheap, it would help. It's a pretty big piece of land.

I think that #1 from CaptainWill's post will be true, but even then.. We could harm the earth permanently by then. Mix that in with pollution and decrease in resources, and you'll see how poor the conditions are.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by uberfoop on 2006-04-23 at 11:21:59
The problem with spreading outward is that would utilize more and more land that could have been used as farmland. The earth is over halfway to its estimated maximum of human population, 12 billion. This estimate is mostly based off of available farmland throughout the world, and 12 billion would mean that every1's life sucks, except maybe the highest aristocrats.

Farmland doesn't mean spit. We are beyond that. All we need to do is grow our food in water. It's called hydro-something angel_not.gif

Not for hundreds of years. To bad we won't be around to see it. That is, Humans of course.

Obviously you guys have no idea how nature works. Take a biology class already. When a species becomes overpopulated there are many things that happen to reduce the population. The main one is food, we dont end up having enough food for people and we starve back down to having enough food. Another is desease, with to many people to close together even small deseases become rampant and deadly.

Populations are meant to rise and fall, its just what happens (although humans are a special case).

Did you know Americans waste more than enough food that could fix hunger?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kashmir on 2006-04-24 at 09:57:42
we produce enough food every year to feed 9 billion people nutritious meals, 3 billion more than are even alive! Even so, 1 out of every 7 people is starving, including 90 million children! Why? Because the rich criminals make more money by letting us starve than by feeding us.

Stuff like natural disasters, wars, and more stuff like that eventually kills people. Im not saying that's a good thing, but there is a little result of what overpopulation comes, such as pollution which can cause bad stuff to happen.

@ Euro

Which is why I don't help the 'feed the Africans' thing because all the money goes to the rich people there anyway.

If we took the world's population and put them all in texas, the density would only be that of New York City. It's not even that of Tokyo. We have a long way to go before we overpopulate.

Today in my Math period during school, the teacher started to rant about how "overpopulation" will be a tragic problem (probably leading to the end of the world) in the next 25-40 years and I wanted to slap her but restrained myself. That's what I used my will-power of the day on.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2006-04-24 at 23:36:58
Too many people isn't the problem. Its the fact that there are too many people without brains that is the problem.

Hmm well about 70% of people who have AIDS live in Africa.. The biggest area of starvation is Africa. The most overpopulated continent is Asia. There are about 1.2 billion people living in China. The most overpopulated town is Tokyo - Japan. Tokyo has a population of 26,4 million.

Tokyo is the fastest evolving city in the world. There is no surten documented information about Tokyo's property values or population.

The 2nd most overpopulated town in the world is Mexico with a population of 18,1 million.

The biggest city in Oceania is Sydney, with a population of 3,6 million. The biggest city in Europe is Moscow, 9,3 million. The biggest city in Africa is Lagos, 13,4 million. The biggest city in South America is Sao Paulo, 17,8 million.

The most possible thing to happen is 1#

I think wel just

a) Destroy each other in pointless wars which have no real cause

b) Be destroyed by aliens

c) We will pollute the world and just die in a wave of diseases and wars practicly like a

d) We will migrate to another planet

e) Nazis will come to power again and kill every other 'race' besides the white!

f) There are hundreds of possibilities
