This guy is working on cloning starcraft for linux. You still require the CD, so blizzard might not kill it (at least not immediately). Remember to check out the source.

The site has been dugg so it might take a while to respond, and the project is still quite incomplete but it's significant step towards giving starcraft freaks like us the ability to switch to linux.

WINE's still an option, but it looks like this will be faster and easier to set up. Wish him luck.

Nm,
Wine is just as good, because there is a project that got over the no-battlenet restricition, and it's not like wine is an emulator or anything so it runs perfectly fast.

Anyway it's always faster being native...

Wishing him luck happy.gif

Starcraft runs just fine under WINE and doesn't really need a really fast computer. I tried it myself years ago.

Starcraft+Wine IS native (its the title of the project, WINE Is Not an Emulator), for your sanity, we'll say it converts Windows code into Linux code.

I know this is off topic, but whats WINE?

It is a program for running Windows applications on a non-Windows system, like Linux for example.

Yeah but in some PCs, like mine, when you run Starcraft+WINE it has a lot of bugs, specially on battle.net...

all the work - for what?

Starcraft is the single best working game in Wine. incuding sound, music, movies, Battle.net, expansion and official updates.

why on earth must you create this and not do something for a software title that does not yet run in Linux? the only thing you do is to change the dependanciy on the wine-libs and runtime with a Mono-dependancy.

what benefit does this bring to a player or why should anybody care?

This I have to agree on - what for?

Besides, that project isn't a "native" one either; it is using Mono, so it very likely won't run as well on a computer that is just fast enough for running Starcraft in WINE.

I tried it on my laptop a few months ago; no bugs at all (except the Bnet menus, but apparently those were fixed according to a previous poster).

...not to mention that the project is prone to Blizzard lawsuits.

DOS mode != text mode.
If you want to see a GUI DOS game, play Commander Keen. tongue.gif I have it.
