sadly, many teenagers don't read books a lot. could reading help us cure ignorance & indifference. or do we need sdomething more ?

there is an interesting phrase: "an empty thought is never a holy one"

Surtenly reading is useful. But there is no surten cure for ignorance or indifference.
There is no way we can make someone read a book. Well we can but if wed make someone read a book against hes/her own will, he/she wouldnt realy be intrested about the information the book contains. Some teenagers read books some dont we are realy in a modern world but books will surtenly never 'die'. But we atleast have some educational shows on TV. But books are different than TV, if your reading a story book you start to imagine things by the text. If your watching a movie you just watch and listen to the characters. And well something that could partialy cure ignorance and indifferences and so on. Is logic and understanding and many other things.

when you read (normal literature, not those cheap detectives) you educate yourself, become more experienced in life. seeing how the heroe makes mistakes you avoid them in your life. it makes you think about philosopical questions. that is good for your world outlook, your morality. isn't high morality cure for ignoranse & indifference ?

You need a dictionary more than anything. Surtenly reading is a great way to stimulate the mind because you have to imagine the situations for yourself. I love to read a good book for hours at a time.

Since my highschool time started I have only read and finished three books that I've wanted to read. I'm starting on a fourth

Read:
1.) A Million Little Pieces by James Frey
I liked it since I was about stuff that interests me.

2.) The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
It was for school, but somehow I got into it.

3.) Phil Gordon's Little Green Book by Phil Gordon
I love poker!

And the book I'm reading now is another for school:

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
It's about Vietnam... Yeah...

The only time I read books is if it interests me. My parents are both big readers and my dad is like a reading freak. He can pick up any book and read it, I can't. I have to be REALLY interested in the book to actually read it. I doubt I'm going to read that many more books in my lifetime though. Maybe some of those Whatever for Dummies books on like LSD or something like that...

Chess doesn't make people any less ignorant, it just makes them good at problem solving and logic.

Eh... apparently you, my friend, haven't read enough. A majority of books exist for the reason of entertainment, just like television. In fact, alot of books really suck. There are also alot of books which are very good, and of course, plain old boring books. The truth is that you're not going to get smarter by reading, say, the average novel, but well crafted stories provoke thought.

You guys know you can go watch the news. Like Wilhem said, books are mostly for entertainment. Your English teachers might try to get you to believe you can learn life lessons from books, but the main reasons to read are to learn English and to entertain yourself.

I don't read books either, and I'm smart. I don't think the problem is what they aren't doing, I think it's what they are doing, like doing drugs, and playing sports all day.

I never read. Last time I read, was when I was researching the history of religions and philosophers. I personally found the non fiction book to be quite hilarious. So in a way, I got a two in one. Information and entertainment. Cha Ching.

you guys don't seem to know the difference between words "smart/intelligent" & "wise". reading literature will not make you smart, it will make you wise. yes, there are cheap detectives & other BS, but i'm not talking about them.

There is a big difference between TV and a book ( a good one that is )

And if you just hate reading well then dont do it.. But the point is you can learn alot from books

One of the greatest things reading books can do is improve your writing ability.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mp(U) on 2006-05-01 at 09:12:21
I know for a fact that reading improves a person's patience level as well as grammar. It helped me a lot when I was younger. I used to read many short novels and I had the best grammar in almost all my classes. The students who were better than me, read more than me. Books also had me utilize my imagination in many applications of life without even realizing most of it came because of the books I had read. Without books, I'd be less patient, probably bad at spelling, and less imagination. In short, books = good biggrin.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kashmir on 2006-05-01 at 12:46:45
Thats total BS, and its not fact. I've read hunreds of books (I'm 16) and my patience is mild. There are a lot of times when I have none. And some times when I have it. To name a few: Lord of the Rings trilogy + every other book J.R.R. Tolkien wrote (theres about 13 others); The Things They Carried; Harry Potter Saga; 1984; Ishmael; Lies My Teacher Told me; A People's History of the United States; Evasion; Days of War, Nights of Love; and many more.

I used a ; because "Days of War, Night of Love" contains a ,.

reading is a part of the world, but i don't think its all bad...your either reading for pleasure, reading for knowledge, or not reading at all. amazing what things you can learn from reading a book.

i am reading books and magizines often, anyway as part of my college work. i'd admit it though, i hated reading when i was younger when schools were forcing you to read, what books they picked for you.

I read too much tongue.gif. I like books because they help pass the time, and can be 'replacements' for televisions.
