Staredit Network -> Music & Sound -> Worst current band?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Slyence on 2006-04-28 at 13:51:06
Let's all unleash those dark, brooding negative energies that build up within us whenever you see little girls swooning over commercialized, neatly packaged, and well advertised bullshiz. Yes, it's nice to be positive, but it doesn't hurt to occasionally acknowledge and understand the sheer amount of crap that flies around in today's industry, so that you may someday NOT reproduce it.

I for one, can't let go of this grudge against Hawthorne Heights. A generally whiny, overproduced singer backed by a, erm, "screamer" who sounds like he is just receiving a large pointed object in his anus for the first time. These screams don't even sound genuinely emotional, and to me they come across as "hey, little girls who say they love us on our myspace like 'screamo' now so we should scream stuff more often!" Their lyrics don't ever seem to soar above "mediocre", although plenty of grade schoolers still seem willing to worship them and place them everywhere possible, as if they're the new Led Zeppelin and "Saying Sorry" is the new Stairway.

As musicians, things only seem worse. When you hear "three guitarists", you probably imagine some kickass triple guitar attacks with face melting riffs or solos made from the interloping of not one, not two, but three possible melodies, all at once. Such is not the case, though. Listen to any song and you will rarely be able to distinguish them from any standard rock band with a rhythm guitarist and a lead. In most cases, even the underlying boring bar chords aren't necessary, and they could probably be doing just fine with one guitarist and a bassist that actually plays something other than the root note of every chord.

The worst quality of all though lies in their song formulas, in terms of chord progressions. Literally every song song seems to rely upon a minor chord, and then a major chord two steps down from there, with another major chord a step inbetween. They fark with the order a bit, but in just about every song its the same. Here are the singles I hear on MTV and the radio, the chords of which I can recall from memory. If you're a guitarist/pianist/bassist, try them out and you'll see what I mean quickly

Ohio is for lovers: G# minor, E major, F# major, G# minor
Niki FM: Db minor, B major, A major
Saying Sorry: A major, B major, Db minor

I downloaded some more and it was all the same vi - IV pattern you'll see there. Very little variation.

But that's just me. What artists really grind your gears?

Green Day. It's some of the same stuff to a lesser extent, but they can't seem to make a song without using an G#5 (among other dull power chords) at least 27 times a song.

Opening of 'American Idiot':
G#5, C#5, F#5

I mean come on...I use power chords in stuff I'm working on, but everything isn't MADE of them, and I'll mix it up with some perfect fourths too. Anyway, back to Green Day sucking, they have tons of moronic teenage fans who listen just because they're hooked on the touched-up vocals.
Same thing with trash like Ashlee Simpson, My Chemical Romance, Silverstein, Death Cab for Cutie (this is a BAND NAME?!?!), Keane, Fall Out Boy, 15,000 others..

My Chemical Romance. Because it just sucks.

I agree with Golden-Fist. The worst band is Chemical Romance.
They just can't sing!!!

Green Day, Linkin Park, Panic at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and oh so many other bands.

Generally, the quality of music has been going down the sh*t hole lately...

You're thinking of Nashville country, man. Johnny Cash owns you. I guess the worst would probably be Fall Out Boy or My Chemical Romance. All these bands are essentially the same thing.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2006-04-30 at 15:41:54
I think one of the worst is Weezer. Their song "Beverly Hills" is soooo overplayed. The beat is too simple.

Yea, lots of bands might have their goods and bads, but hey, I'd MUCH rather listen to them than the crappy rap/hiphop/R&B/pop music currently played on our hit music stations.

ADDITION:
Oh and also, I kind of like bands like Simple Plan, Fallout boy, All-american Rejects. But the problem with them is just the singer's voices, ESPECIALLY Fallout boys. They all sound like little 8 year olds.

Almost every single teenager that listens to makes, has never really made more than 10 songs before and/or doesn't know the basic fundamentals of music composing. These are the people the radio is trying to impress.

That seems true, in an odd interpretation of DT's extreme isolationism tongue.gif

Most "bands", I.E. Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance, suck.

You don't refer to Rage Against to the machine as a "band". They're a "group". Just a weird interpretation of it.

I think bands suck if their lead singers can't sing worth a hoot and must rely on sound editing.

I feel pretty close to that, with the exception of a few older bands.

Linkin Park is MUCH better than most current bands right now. Chester (the lead singer) can sing REALLY well (although in many songs he shouts, but still he's got good voice.) Their instruments skills are ok, not the best, but definately not simple boring easy beats.

Linkin Park is decent. There's bands I like better than them, but then there's even more bands I hate more than them.

The shouting is one of the main reasons I hate Linkin Park. I figure that if someone has to shout through more than half the song, they generally can't sing, and the music isn't worth listening too.

Don't get me wrong, there's sometimes in songs that you just have to scream, take Fake by Allele or Downfall by TRUSTCompany. Both excellent songs, but just wouldn't be as good without shouting.

But the way that Linkin Park does it, just way too much, and IMO, not worth listening to.

Singing very loudly is ALOT harder than singing softly.

Weezer sucks, Alexis on Fire sucks, My Chemical Romance sucks, alot of people like Panic! At the Disco, but I dislike it because they have a perfectly good song going and then they ruin it with a repeditive lyric witha bad beat right int he middle.

Yes, but alot of their singles don't have shouting. Like "In the End," "Breaking the Habit," "Somewhere I belong." Many of their best songs don't have them (well, "numb" might have a little bit, but not alot.) Infact, most of their songs consist mostly of rapping. At the grammys or something this year, Linkin Park performed with Paul Mcartney and they sang amazingly well.

And the shouting by Linkin Park is nothing compared to bands like Sum41, Story of the Year, Atreyu, Hawthorne Heights, and many other bands (especially the ones that fall under the heavy metal category.)

I really like Panic! At the Disco, especially that one song called "The only difference between a Martyr and a something is... w/e." But what I hate about them is the fact that the person can't sing, thus relying on digital sound editing. Sorry, but he can't. I went to MTV.com and listened to them sing live and he was HORRIBLE. He couldn't hit any high notes.

I hate it when lots of lead singers can't sing well live sad.gif

That song is overrated. Again, they have better songs which don't involve shouting.
