Staredit Network -> StarCraft Editing Related -> My problem with reviews
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Daedalus on 2006-04-30 at 07:26:47
Hello everyone. Most of you will not know me, I've recently 'returned' to SEN after having a loong SC map making break. To 'update' my knowledge I decided to give the review forum a visit and I read quite some reviews, without any succes.

This is an example of a part of a review:
"Gameplay: I love the gameplay, it was greated and it made me play it again."
End of gameplay review.

It may be because I've written a lot of reviews (on other subjects) but in my opinion that is most certainly not a review but just an opinion of a random player. I am of course also interested in opinions but what I really want is a review about the specific map.
So what do I expect from a review? Just a little more info then the tileset, number of players and how great you thought it was. When you write a review tell the readers what the gameplay is; do you have to go through 6 steps just to cast a spell, are you driving a car or flying a plane, is it easy to learn the controls if they are different then usual, etc.
No, you don't have to write four paragraphs on every subject, just a couple of lins about what the gameplay is, what you thought of it and (most important) why you thought it was great/bad.

In short, this is what I am looking for in a review:
1. Basic information like creator, map size, tileset, players, size, etc
2. Some lines about every subject (like gameplay, difficulty, proffesionality, etc), what you think about that part and why you think that
3. Possible improvements, useful for both the map maker and the readers of the review
4. 'In short', an end line which repeats what you think of the map ("Very interesting map, I recomment it")

Who cares?

The last time I looked people did care about this forum. If someone says he thinks the average level of certain aspects of the forum are way below anything else then I would care (which is not necessarily the same as agreeing).
Do you think the reviews are worth reading?

This is why you request official map reviews:

(may be biased since only one person does it)

Thanks MillenniumArmy, that are reviews I'm looking for :-).

Anyway, I hope there are others out here who do understand that I don't care if you don't care but that I just want to get your opinion about a subject... which should be quite ehm, normal?

Well, I try to give detailed reviews about the positive and negative aspects of the maps that I tried before. Personally, I like breaking down the map into categories, so the player will understand each aspect of it, and the mapper (if (s)he's around) wil also take notice of what to do, or not to do on the next map one produces. However, I never thought of introducing the gameplay to the player, as well as the basic information on the map (such as tilesets), since most maps hosted on SEN already have those on the downloads parameter.

I'll add in your suggestions to my future reviews. I'm glad to see that there's more supporters of the review section than I thought.

I usually don't look at professional reviews, mainly because I probably don't know where to look for them, so I don't bother. However, every once in a while I do look at the peer reviews, and it's good to see it when people explain why they gave such-and-such reviews. It's also fun to make silly remarks. smile.gif

Your options are Deus Ex, Greek Mythology and the Freelancer mod Asgard. I'm bussy with a mod which has a lot of things in common with Deus Ex, I like Greek mythology and I've helped creating the latest major update for the Asgard mod tongue.gif (no scripting, only stories/histories/etc).

By the way, I noticed that only MillenniumArmy, High and a few others have reviewed maps in the 'official' review section. Now that's a great thing because it ensures quality reviews. But I assume that when others (like me in the near future) submit a quality review they will get placed there as well?

I want it so that people can submit map reviews like they can with tutorials and files (and have a database keeper for it too.) But we'll see how SENv5 turns out to be.

MillenniumArmy writes good reviews. I'm very satisfied with the one he wrote for my campaign. But I agree with Daedalus about the vast majority of user reviews. I've gotten some reviews that say "this is good" or "cool", but that's all they say. I really wish more people would take the time to write a decent review. Not that I don't appreciate such things, but I wonder just how much they enjoyed it (or didn't enjoy it, for that matter) and if they noticed some of the little secret things or funny little twists I added.
