Then play it. What's the point of playing Vanilla when you can play... um... Let's see... A better game?
Most of my friends play vanilla melees, and I like them more thant BW melees. In BW all three races are... hmmm... too strong. The new units are too strong. So:
Melee = Vanilla
UMS = BW

PD: Vannilla = Original
Well, most people say that Brood War balanced everything out (in fact, some conspiracy theorists believe that Blizzard deleted the "balancing" units from BW on purpose in order to intice people to buy Brood War once it came out, giving Blizz an extra $20).
However, I haven't played "hardcore" melee (aka I was never a complete pro though I was also not a n00b), so I'm not sure about the "balancing" thing. Besides, how can all three races be "too strong"? If one race is stronger than it was before, and the other 2 races are also stronger than they were before, then all three races are balanced (aka if 1 becomes 2 and the other 1's also become 2's, it really doesn't matter... does it? Unless you're talking about too many units dying/being built to be massed, in which case, there's still plenty of micromanagement in StarCraft.)
As for UMS, well, Brood War has more options, and even though the "balancing" argument that is valid for melee is not valid anymore for UMS, it's still nice to have those extra units and heroes because they can add to the complexity of the map/the overall amount of units you can modify and use for your own purpose. However, if you're not going to use those extra units in your map, don't make it Brood War-only.
Oh, and, btw, Brood War only costs young Timmy $5.
...and if he's living in a third world country, he STILL can afford it because in third world countries, the software salespeople pirate games and sell them for cheaper than retail (notice: I'm not encouraging the pirating of games,
especially SC/Brood War).
...and if Timmy lives in the USA and is just poor, I have an idea.
What if, let's say, people re-made existing maps (read: existing, not new ones like this topic encourages) from being Brood War-only to supporting regular SC? I know for a
fact that most maps don't use the extra 5 units that Brood War gives, so what's the big deal here? Sure, maps like Yoshi Da Sniper's "The Matrix" (which still hasn't come out yet so I don't know for sure) probably use all the capabilities of a Brood War map, but about 90% of the UMS maps out there could
easily be converted into vanilla format.
