I'm pissed off with the school and the type of classes we need to take. I have to take a half year of pool and gym, and I don't see the point. First off, it doesn't matter if you already know how to swim, you have to take pool. And gym, what if you don't want to be athletic, why do you have to take it. Instead of taking something that could help me in life, like journalism, I'm stuck with pool. I don't get why we're taking it though.

It's this simple, if you don't know how to swim, stay out of deep water. It's not like we need to be able to swim to survive in the world.

And foriegn languages, if I wanted to speak spanish, then I can understand me wanting to take the class, but the fact is, I don't care about speaking Spanish, nor do I ever want to move to a predominantly Spanish speaking country.

And yes, I know it's good on your college resume, but I think that should change.

What do you think? XD

Pool = completely stupid
Gym = gives kids a time to burn energy
Spanish = proof that mexicans are a huge problem and should not be required. foriegn language is your own choice.

Courses like math should be mandatory. You basic math for 99% of all jobs, and algebra and calculus for many more. You need to know how to read and write today. I could go on but I don't have the time right now.

Gym - Useless. It only creates trauma for the kids. No wonder everyone is emo nowadays. So what if people are being obese. It's THEIR fault. Hear that? THEIR FREAKING FAULT.

Pool - double-you-tee-eff?!

Spanish - Total BS. Definantly proof of the Mexican problem. If they want to live/work here, let them learn freaking English.

I don't think gym is completely useless, just too structured. At my school, your forced to do some lame game that's just a mix of two sports. The stupid part is, the rules are always ignored by the cheating team. Of course, the gym coaches don't watch, so cheating team wins and brags about it. At my school anyway.

I have to take 2 years of science, 2 years of history, 4 years of english, and 3 years of math to graduate. Wtf is that? WHy 4 years of english? And art credits? I need amount of art credits to graduate, that's retarded. "Wellness" meaning Drug/Sexual education is also retarded. I've already failed Sex ED once because I didn't want to ask my parents about their sexual mometns as a child. Why should there be homework for that class? It's useless, I already know crap like use a condom and what an STD is I don't need to watch the entire first season of "Dawson's Creek" in order to get the concept. That class is useless.

I can definitely see how pottery will help me in life, as opposed to programming or calculus...

Gym and Spanish, I can understand. Gym is so that kids wont being lazy fat***es, and for Spanish, although not nessecary, is useful. You'll generally get paid more for knowing more languages.

But what about this. We are required to take Keyboarding, Health, Speech, Leadership and some retarded technology classes.

What also bugs me is the four years of language. For one, our language is degrading even with that, and second, if it degrades so much, everyone will still know what everyone else is saying. It's simple adaptation. I think we should have to take more in Science and Math, not English.

I think Gym is necessary, it helps you stay fit and for some kids it might mean not being obese. Plus, it's not that hard, so why complain? It's an easy grade.

For our school, we need:

4 credits of Language Arts
4 credits of Social Studies
3 credits of Math (Algebra I&II and Geometry are required)
3 credits of Science (biology, chemistry, and physics are required)
1 credit of Tech class
2 credits of Foreign Language (it doesn't have to be spanish, could be french, german, or even sign language.)
1 credit of Fine arts
1.5 credits of Athletics (Each year, Marching Band waivers 0.5 credits)
0.5 credits of Health
0.5 credits of Speech (I think debate could take it's place, i think...)
5.5 credits of Electives (meaning anything that doesn't fit in the above categories or exceeds it)

I personally think it's fine.

maybe gym & swimming won't help you in life, but will help someone else. school is a bit of everything. besides, i think it's not bad: look at the Chineese, they're a sporty country. is that bad ? ofcourse not ! if you prefer to go to the gym instead of drinking alcohol it is a big + to your health.

Spanish required = Knowledge of some Hispanic language so you may interact with Hispanic CUSTOMERS if they are ever came across.

I don't need either of them. If you want to get in shape, then take the class, but if you don't need it, why should you be taking it?(That goes for Pool and Gym.)

What if I don't want a job that requires me to talk to people, or customers?

I haven't used the language outside of school. It's not ever going to matter with me.

And Jammed, if they need to learn how to swim, or get in shape, then I encourage them to take Gym or Pool, but if you're not learning anything, or not doing anything productive, I feel your classes should go to something you'd actually use in future life.

i want to tell 1 thing to you: you never know what will you do in the future. you can only make some plans, but life can set things other way.

a good example: when i was in grades below 7 i COULD learn music, but i said to myself "i won't need it" (basically i didn't like music for 1 reason - the teacher). what i know now is like 50% of what i could have known if i learned it while i could. now i screwed myself up, cuz i started playing the guitar & i regret not learning music 2x times. morale: extract everything while you can from this life, cuz later it may be too late.

We don't own a pool so there is no pool class at my school. We only need 1 gym credit. We have to take one semester of Core-French from those people who don't speak french. I have to take french once every year. I need two french classes every year if I want to get my bilingual diploma.

By keyboarding, you mean you need to learn how to type fast? Or am I missing something?
The english requirement is what annoys me most of all currently. I read more then my literacy teacher (probably), write well, and do all that quite well. And now I'm wasting a few extra hours a week on literacy when I could be learning programming or something (Stupid Middle School. No programming or technology classes).

The education system is generally geared toward the average american child, which is 'poor' judgement. Gear it toward above average and force the average american children to work. If they can't get anything above average (actually, standards in school at in the 80%'s. Most average children get 80%-, even 60%'s.), then they're worthless to society, or if not worthless near that. Something I've never failed to say in any of these school topics happy.gif.

why do they make you take pool? that must be the most useless class of all time. but i can almost see where they are coming from.

im a lifeguard so i dont enjoy rescueing idiots thats dont know how to swim in the deep end. paper work is horrifying. sad.gif

but in our school, we choose litterly everything we take except math science and 3 years of english 1 semester of health and a year of PE but otherwise we can take w.e we feel we want smile.gif

gym is a VERY good class. idk the exact satistic but over 60 % of americans are obeise at the age 18. thats not good lol. so they made gym. and they need to keep people in line somehow lool tongue.gif

As deathhawk already said Toothfairy, its not the schools problem that people are fat. People are fat because of one of two reasons:
A. They have some sort of disease that renders it impossible or very difficult not to be (Metabolic disorders, etc...)
B. They're too lazy to get excercise.
If its the former, no amount of running at school is going to help, and if its the latter, then its the person's person decision. Running a lap every day isn't going to prepare someone mentally for the real world, if anything it makes the lazy fat people resentful of exercise, leading to even more obesity.
Summary: Its not the school's problem.

Knowing how to read, write and speak several Languages is extremely necesary in today's Globalized economy.

I'm a full bilingual, meaning I can read, write and speak to near perfection 2 Langauges. That means that if we have that same education and experience, I have a 100% chance of getting the job before you.

You say that Hispanics should learn English and stuff. I SAY THE SAME THING ABOUT YOU GUYS. You all come strolling into Puerto Rico and start talking to us in English, why can't you guys learn Spanish? After all, you are in our country and you expect us to speak your language.

It's always of politeness that when speaking to a stranger, you always speak the language of the person foreing to the country. Also, talking about business, what if you could do business with Hispanic customers, but you can't conduct it because there's no means of communication. They'll simply go to the spanish speaking competition that you have, and that means your market just got way smaller.

Ahaha that is the same thing that happens in Québec. People from the other provinces come and start to speak english to the people of Québec and expect them to reply back with english but when the poeple from Québec come to places like Ontario, they speak english. It is pretty unfaire.

Well normally people visit those places for a few days and then leave. Though anyone who tries to stay there long term and thinks they'll just "figure it out" should be shot.

I'm guessing you're going to be some kind of buisness man... People who want to be an actor or art design probably don't need to speak spainish or any other language. There's no market for them to open up to. So language is sort of useless for them.

I think what mill posted seemed pretty well rounded (the extra stuff, 4 years of history is unbearable). The idea that I have to Pass Health Class every term for 16 terms that I take throughout THE ENTIRE SCHOOL is ridiculos. So because I didn't want to do some dumb assignments I have to take it during the summer, that's just dumb.
