Staredit Network -> Modding Chat -> Doom Dragoon stress-testing
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BroodKiller on 2006-05-04 at 05:46:59
So, yesterday I was showing the BSTRhino's "Doom" mod series to my friend, and we came up with a nifty idea of checking out how much zerglings can a dozen of Doom Dragoons stand against. It was damn funny just to watch them 'lings die, but a question emerged: "Which formation is the most effective?". I'll post our results later, but here are the "rules of engagement" for those who want to join the club and verify the best formation:

!)You may place only 12 Doom Dragoons, no more, no less.
@)The "Singularity Charge" upgrade is researched, but no damage/armor/shield upgrades are used.
#)The DDs are issued the "Hold Position" order at the very beginning. No other orders (movement, attack etc.) can be isssued during the test.
$)The stress-test is done in a "constant-flow" system, using triggers: you create 24 zerglings BELOW the DDs, and issue them the Patrol order to a location ABOVE (or BEHIND) the DDs.
%)The zergling-creation trigger is Preserved, and activated every 2 seconds: no hyper-triggers here.
^)The test lasts until all the DDs are out.
&)The results are displayed as a Leader Board of Zergling Kills
*)Game speed is "Fastest".

And that's it. So far, the testing showed out that the best formation is 2x6 (2 lines of 6 DDs), with over 950 kills, and the worst is 1x12 (a single line of 12 DDs) with about 600 kills. 4x3 and 3x4 are somewhere in-between.

So, c'mon, test it out yourself and post your results! smile.gif

PS:Another stress-testing showed that 100 DDs placed in circle around a target location with a constant creation of 60 'lings can hold off over 17.000 zerglings =D

I got 1069 kills, I had it similar to a 2x6 but I had 7 dragoons in the front row and 5 in the back row.

When I got to 3000 kills, I decided that you people suck at tactical formations.

ADDITION:

At 7000 kills, I realized I had shorted myself a doom goon and decided you people REALLY suck at tactical formations.

ADDITION:

At about 15000 kills, I thought I might be doing something wrong. So I changed two things:
1. I added a trigger to constantly set me to enemy.
2 I changed the patrol to attack.

I still could get to over 3000 without losing a goon.

!)Was the speed "fastest"?
@)Did you manoeuver with the goons?
@)Instead of lauiding yourself and talking us down, share your "ingenious formation", pal.

Yes, it was on fastest.
No, I didn't move the goons at all. I set them to hold position.

My formation was like this:

|X XXX X
||XXXXX

Hmm...are you sure you were creating 24 zerglings per each trigger activation?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Demaris on 2006-05-08 at 13:51:12

Yep. 24 every 2 seconds.

Hmm...I can't get it. Something MUST be wrong here, because the formation itself (or lack of thereof) couldn't create such big differences...

Wait! Where did you draw the Zergling-creation location and what shape it is?

I can just post the map. :o_0:

It was about 3 squares out of the range of the goons, to the bottom.

Lemme find the map to post.
