Now, whoever owns one and uses it regularily, I'm very curious as to how good they are for graphics and web design, programming, and other things. I assume the monitors on most new ones have good color resolution and what not correct?
Are they worth buying for the reasons I have said? Do the batteries last for a reasonable time when not plugged in? Do the batteries ever die out and cause me to buy a new one? Thxs for any answers/advice!
If you're not going to travel, don't get one. Games like SC usually don't lag at all because of low requirements, but more advanced games can be nearly unplayable. Everything loads slowly compared to desktops (2 times slower?). No comment on the battery thing.
The monitors usually are not good for FPS, and fast moving games, since their LCDs and stuff. If you're looking for a gaming computer, I'd recommend a PC, they're cheaper and better.
It depends on the laptop, you'll want one with a good battery though. But if the battery life is like 6 hours or so, you should be fine. It's not like you can't plug it in and charge it, and use it.
I own a laptop and I'd only reccomend it if you're going to be doing low-demanding tasks while on the road. They're usually very difficult to impossible to upgrade, meaning they get obsolete fast.
By the way, avoid Dell laptops at all cost. Their batteries start losing their charge
just after the warranty usually expires. What a coincidence...
Not all laptops are teh suck. I have an alienware and it has HD monitor and it rox graphics wise. 1 or 2 gigs of RAM.
There's no advantage of having one over a desktop unless you're on the go a lot.
thanks guys, quite helpful. I suppose I don't really need a laptop, just thought it might be neat, so perhaps I'll stick with desktops. Been thinking of setting up a real nice workstation with 2+ computers.

You have no clue of wtf you're talking about.
I have a Sony Vaio, and it runs most games flawlessly. The only game that lagged a lot was AOE III (And that's because I had trojans up the wazoo)
My laptop is faster than my mom's comp at home.
My laptop is a Sony Vaio FS VGN-FS660 with 1.7 GH and 1 GB RAM. DVD-Burner & ROM, Nvidea GeForce Go 6200 128MB Memory.
Mine is specifically for games, graphic design, and software design.
Mp, if you can afford it, I'd go for the laptop. I LOVE being able to take it places and easily use it.
Kellimus, I was generally talking about the not very expensive ones. My laptop was decent, good for work or whatever, but sucky at bad games. Laptops can be as good as desktops, sure, but they can hardly be upgraded and cost much more. How much did your cost, Killimus? I assume more then $2000? Much more?
Pfft, that's like 600 dollars more than the desktop equivllient :\
And what computer is your mothers? A 1 GHZ Pentium III with like 128 MB RAM? -_-
An E-Machine. So it has tons of extra useless things added to it, to slow it down.
I have more RAM than her, too.

Problem with that is lots of alienware laptops have a dead pixel problem. You got lucky.
The thing with Alienware is to find the problems before the warranty expires.
Labtops are fine and useful in many situations. You just have to be willing to pay twice the price for the same specs of a normal computer.

Then hope you live close to Florida. My computer was shipped in June, and we got our rebate this Febuary.
$1200? Really? I expected it to be much more. Sorry about that. Anyway, it is a great waste of money if you don't move around a lot (I have experienced the waste of money thing firsthand) and gets obsolete fast. I'd still stick with desktop for sure.
As said before: If you don't plan on using it on the move (car, metro, places other than home) or you dont' go to a lot of lan parties (providing you get a good enough computer), it's better and cheaper to get a desktop. The only advantage for the laptop is size and portablility.

I don't move around a lot, and my Laptop is still considered top of the line (I got it in August)
It will be handy though when I am out of college.
1500 for mine and the only thing wrong with it (anymore, the previous problem was my fault and it got fixed) is the fan needing to be jumpstarted with a puff of air or a toothpick when it has been off for any amount of time greater than 5 seconds. It's our only computer worth turning on and it rarely gets moved. It's top of the line and I can play most any new game with ease at max settings.
