There are lots of talented artists out there, but then again there are tons of untalented artists out there as well. Usually, when I think of a talented artist, they've got to be good at either singing and/or instruments.
As much I as I am not a huge fan of them, I think the most talented artists when it comes to their instrumental skills would be the Metal bands. Their drummers and guitarrists can come up with really cool stuff. One good example in my opinion would be Avenged Sevenfold. Their singing (or maybe screaming) is something I do not like about them.
The talented artists, when it comes to their singing, I believe would be the pop artists. Like Mariah Carey. Again, I am not fond with her style of songs, but I really have to admit that she can sing really really well. I'd much rather listen to the rock category, but it's a shame that many of them can't sing very well.
What do you guys think?

A friend I have is a really talented Psychedelic Trance producer.

Union Jack, Resistance D, Solar Quest and Chris Liberator all use a TB-303. TB-303s are really, really hard to get programmed perfectly, yet all of these artists create melodies with them. In my eyes, that takes talent to do such a thing.

i think the most talanted people in music (play instrumental) are the ones who play metal/rock/other style that needs good skills.

Johnny Cash's songs didn't have all this fancy multilayering stuff, but they have alot more soul than our waterdowned, digitized, assembly line crap. As he got older, you can literally hear him dieing, towards the end he could hardly sing, but the passion was so much stronger right before he died. Though multilayered, complex songs are good, you don't need that stuff to make good music. I think what I like about Johnny Cash best is his honesty. A speech in the movie Walk The Line sums it up pretty nicely:

I think all rap artists are the most talented. Especially D4L with Laffy Taffy. The 3 notes and the hand clap that make up the entire song make it unique and special [/sarcasm]

If you make a whole freaking song with 3 notes and millions of people buy it, and i freaking crap all over it, and the lyrics are freaking garbage, or you stole mine off a freewebs site and changed 1 line in the chorus and 2 in the first verse for your hit single of "lonely", then you're good, right? *cough*

My fingers are like...mean to me. They just won't work in tandum. My keyboarding is so crapty, I either need to play chords with the left hand on a melody with the right, or the same notes on both...
Making a melody and everything up electronically takes some skill, but I think it's more imagination to be able to have it in your head and then just put it down instead of needing to play it. But programming the craps are damn hard.

What about Blink 182 and Sum 41? Would they be considered more talented than most mainstream bands?
Both bands fall under the punk rock genre and IMO have some relatively good guitar playing. And especially the drummer in Blink 182; I think he is one of the most talented drummers. These are two of my favorite bands.

Well, I think the best singer ever was Freddie Mercury. I can't really get to specific with guitarists and drummers because people have their own unique style, and for the most part, I enjoy almost any guitar solo.

I've written lyrics about as mediocre as many rappers except sometimes better just for fun.

3/4 lines of his chorus were the same.
Anyway, many rap beats are really disgusting. I don't see why rappers don't use better music. Run DMC used to use rock loops, but that was before anyone knew wtf they were doing.

That's not "punk rock." Power chords and a few assorted lead bits do not equate to "more talented than most mainstream bands." They're PART of the mainstream bands. And no, Travis Barker is not one of the most talented drummers. For real drumming talent, try these:

Electronic music is the easiest to make simply because you can make many things sound good relatively easily. It is based more upon the equipment than the talent required.
One thing that I see as talent is the ability to create something original in the music world.
Artists who exemplify this:
Parliment Funkadelic (for the funk movement)
Dr. Dre (For rap, transforming it to what it is today)
Dexys Midnight Runners (For something else entirely)
Danny Elfman (Cool orchestra with new feels)
The Beatles (nuff said)
They Might Be Giants (Different material)
Serge Gainsbourg (For being the original sexy frenchman)
