Some of you know, some of you don't, but I've been working for quite some time on a movie. It's animated, and its in the anime style. Don't bring that "I hate anime" crap here, cuz that is a matter that's beneath my notice. I want to know what you think of the movie itself.

Now, the quality will be compromised because the file has been significantly compressed from its original version. The original, uncompressed file is 1.45 GB in size. Obviously too big to be practical over the net. The file that I'm showcasing here is only about 11 MB in size. As you can imagine, the image and sound quality is quite muddled (seeing as this file is less than 1% the original file's size). With that in mind, try to give me a good review of the animation quality, the sound, story, etc. It won't be anywhere near as crisp as the original and you can see the white edges beyond the frame on the left and right sides (which would not be visible on a TV or projection screen). By the way, I'm the "Jack Patchell" that you will be seeing in the end credits.

But anyways, to view the movie, go here: *Link removed*

It's a Windows Media File, so I hope you either have that player or know how to convert it to a useful format.

Easter Egg: I don't know if you'll be able to see it, but the teacher's nameplate says Mr. Doodan. Just a little shoutout to my internet friends.

I had forgotten about this, looks pretty impressive though.

What age group is this targeted towards?

Wow, that's pretty awesome Doodan!

The quality is suprisingly good for the amount of compression that had to take place.

You can't see it.

Great movie, I didn't think that anyone on SEN would be able to make this, hehe

Very good Doodan. Only things I would really comment on would be the background people and the proportioning. Try to make the people in the background move. For instance, if there's somebody who's walking, don't freeze them, let them walk by, or if people are talking, lik move their mouths, eyes, and head very slightly. Sometimes the proportions of the bodies are off, so watch out for that, but I know that some of it was intentional. I do know that it's really hard to fix all those in an animation, and you probably had a time limit. Overall though, I really enjoyed that. It had very good expression of emotions and movement of the main characters. The sound was good, not necessarily the best, but still very good compared to most animations out there. This probbaly took a really long time, because looking at some of my work and knowing the process, animation can be very tedious. You deserve this for actually making an animation of that length and quality:

I know what you mean about the background people. I do wish I'd given them more movement, but the foreground characters had to take priority over them (cuz I did have a time limit). And I hate how bad the sound is on this compressed version. I spent weeks working on the sound design, and it payed off. When I screened it at my college during the annual screening of all student films, my sound easily beat all of the other movies. But the compression does not do it justice. sad.gif

But thank you everyone for the comments. I'll be sure and let you see the second half when I finish it. smile.gif

As far as compressed sound goes, you should try asking egoraptor what he does/uses. He is incredible as far as sounds and voices go since that's all he really focuses on. I believe he's in deviant art.

Sorry I couldn't host your movie. I suppose they have a limit per file, and the max limit is 50 MB. Mind if I still link it on my site? I'm gonna fix up my site so it's not such a piece of junk.

I just watched that... my favorite is the talking pencil. The sound quality is very poor, but it's pretty damn cool. The drawing... I must admit, looks pretty low quality, but it must be much easier to animate. You didn't do the old anime "50 minute still-frame of just mouth movement" stuff too much. My favorite was the talking pencil.

Also, are you gonna put this on DVD/sell it? Then you could make an imdb.com page for it, which would be pretty awesome. By the way, you wrote, animated, and directed, correct?

Yeah I have DVD/IMDB plans for it, although I plan on using this movie more as a showcase for my ideas rather than trying to make any money on the movie itself. I imagine I'd have a better chance of getting a TV or movie deal if I actually have something to show instead of just talking about my ideas.

It's a shame the sound did not transfer well, because I put a lot of love into it.

And yes, I wrote, directed, animated, edited, and co-produced it. I did a number of other things too, but I chose to go uncredited for them because I didn't want for "Jack Patchell" to show up in the credits a hundred times, cuz I think that looks amateuristic. For instance, I recorded a lot of the sound effects, drew the storyboards, and I even did a voice in the movie (see if you can guess who). Long story short, I did most (or all) of the work in many of the departments. Thank you for the comments.

And sure, you can still link to it if you want.

Oh and Wilhelm, I'm cool with how you shot me down the first time I talked about this last year. I was being a cocky, arrogant jerk. I needed the lesson.

Your main character must never stop working out, he's more muscular than Gohan.

It was very good. I wasn't expecting the animation to be that well drawn and animated. Just the walking and hand movements were a bit stiff but it was very well and the mouth is done well for a cartoon.

Its good, I like its bizzare sense of humor, and the animation is great, especially for a one person project.
Is there somewhere where the full 1.4 gig file is available?

It was around then, lol. Like I said, I needed the lesson. A few months afterwards, I encountered someone in the film program with the exact same attitude I'd had, and I couldn't take the guy seriously either. Shortly afterwards, I heard he was betrayed by his crew on a movie he was working on.

Thank you, and no, it's not online, but that's not a bad idea... I'll have to see about that, although I'm sure I'd have to pay (unless I uploaded it via Kazaa or something).

Now what program did you use? Macromedia? And if I remember correctly, didn't you say you drew the sketches on paper, then edited them on the computer? I'm probably thinking of something different.

I drew EVERYTHING by hand. I scanned them into Photoshop, where I polished, colored, and put the frames together (the backgrounds, character poses, mouths, and sometimes certain body parts were all drawn seperately). Then I exported them to Avid, where I edited the movie together one frame at a time and synced the mouth movements up with the dialog tracks. Once that monstrous task was over, I added the music and sound effects where appropriate. Recording the sound effects was a blast. The teacher of the sound class let me borrow his students for a week so I could do this. He got a special thanks credit (Bart Vleugels).

You should just make it easy on yourself and buy a wacom tablet. That would save you months.

You could make a bittorrent for it, that would be better than using Kazza.

I was going to ask how you did that... Wow man so I take it your a film major or something. Where do you go to school? I'm currently finishing up an Anime Music Video that I’ve put alot of work into hopefully alot of people here will watch it. Although you defiantly put more work into that and I don't have a staff lol.

Here is my review, I don't really have the qualifications to review it but I’ll tell you what I think anyways.

Sound:
I really liked it, the voice acting was a lot better than I was expecting. (another words it wasn't really lame). I take it you got some drama people to do it for you.
The quality was really low cause of the compression I wasn't able to understand a lot of the stuff they said. I liked how when you had the view in the locker it was muffled.

Animation:
First off I think the animation is amazing considering it is all hand drawn. How many images did you draw? The characters have really big hair for some reason. Becky is pretty ripped. You did a good job showing there emotions and natural body movements when they were speaking. When Becky waved good bye it looked kind of unnatural, like she waved her hand very fast like she was in a hurry or extremely hyper but she wasn't walking off when waving or anything and she wasn't hyper excited judging by the voice acting.

Story:
How did they get in the school on a Saturday? I'm not much of a story person.. looks like you thought it out with the whole weird talking pencils. Would there be flashbacks showing how they came to life or something? As far as the first part it doesn't seem like much happens, Maybe you should have a little more character development.

Overall:
Well I think its just really incredible, I know its better than I could do. I just felt that I should make some comments about what I didn't like. Cause lets face it you want to improve and I don't want to watch it every day so I figured i would tell you why.

Good Luck in the future.

Very nice. I never could imagine people drawing these things frame by frame.. Nice sound effects and all, though muffled, and nice animation, though the characters had wierd eyes and eyebrows. And the hair was huge, as said before, but that's probably just an attribute of anime movies. 10/10.

Some of the things you mentioned were intentional (like the big hair, which I found much easier to draw than hairstyles like this or this). Other things weren't, like the weird wave. I thought it looked weird when I made it too, but I was under a deadline to finish the first half before the spring semester ended. For now, it's passable. I DEFINITELY plan on polishing up some of the sequences.

I'm proud of the voice actors I found. A couple of them were indeed from drama programs. But many of them weren't. When I first started it, I casted the characters with a bunch of my friends from the film program. But I soon came to regret that because none of them are actors, and it showed. So I fired all of them (yes, fired ALL of my friends) and I had a huge casting call and I advertised like crazy. In all, about 60 - 70 people turned up for auditions. I got a wide range of people. For instance, Led the pencil was voiced by a radio DJ for the local oldies station. Pearl the eraser was done by a news anchorwoman (who actually isn't southern). Sycro (who wasn't seen in the first half) was done by a well-known (and one of the best) movie director in Oklahoma. And the girl who did Becky's voice was only 12 years old at the time. Some of the others had no prior experience, but had natural talent.

And thankfully (I stress THANKFULLY), every single one of them worked without pay. I DID have to pay for the studio recording time, though.

Regarding the story: Maybe you can't get back into schools over the weekend in the city, but I grew up in the country and kids would occasionally come back to school on weekends. Perhaps they broke in? LOL. This is also just a short little movie. I have a much grander storyline with alot more characters than what's presented. I wanted to condense as much as I could into this little time frame, but I'm hoping for the chance to make it bigger sometime in the future.

Thank you for your comments!
