Chapter 1: Cleansing
The year is 1933. My name is Erik Kohn, and I am Jewish boy; I am 13 years old and my father fought in World War I. My family and I live in Berlin and I am told that our family has lived here for many generations. Father claims to have fought with the Chancellor in World War I; Father calls him a crazy man and a half-decent soldier. I don’t believe these stories because how could a crazy person become a leader of our nation? The Chancellor has been talking about cleansing Germany; I don’t know what this means but I believe it has something to do with our golden stars. Maybe we are the purest of Germany and this is our way of showing so. Though I highly doubt this, I still believe that the future is bright for my family and me.
Chapter 2: From Chancellor to Fuhrer
Hitler has a new office, he is now Fuhrer, his campaign shows him with children and they are always smiling. I never knew that people could be this happy. Not many actions have been taken in order to “purify” Germany. The last thing that happened was that he moved the Yellow Stars to parts of the cities to keep “Us” together. Germany is headed for disaster, many families are leaving to England or France; some went to the homeland of Zion, but I never knew why they ran, or why they were in such a hurry to leave. The year was 1934.
Chapter 3: “It Ain’t Our Business” (I know the English is incorrect because he talks with slang)
Hey, the name’s Anthony Smith, just call me Tony. Me and my friends ain’t stupid, we just don’t care, we know what’s going on in Germany. With that dude with the moustache, what’s his name Hiltrer? Something like that. I feel bad for all the Jews in Europe, but hey, it ain’t our business. I mean its like 1936, what’s the worst that can happen? Lets just have fun and not worry about it.
Chapter 4: Kristallnacht: Shattered Glass and Distraught Hope
November 10, 1938: Me and my family fear for our lives. Last night, many delinquents had gone around and destroyed places of business. The attacks, however, were not random, for all the businesses attacked were owned by Jewish men. Being the eldest son, I had to help my Father restore his book store. My sisters are nervous and no longer sleep at night; it is terrible what they must go through at their young age. The worst part is that their birthdays are coming up, Tzipi and Golda are going to be turning 12. In these times of darkness, I look towards the twins for strength.
Chapter 5: Living in ’39, Drafted in ’40, Killing in ‘41
Dear Log Book, it’s been a while since I put an entry, but I was too busy workin’ my butt off for FDR. I mean there I was, I had just turned 21 years old; I got the best present from Uncle Sam, drafted. A bunch of guys go out and party on their 21st, I get shipped off. I spent most of ’40 in a boot camp just outside Boston and eventually I left for England. The year is ’41, my squad and I are fighting the German War Machines, we don’t have a chance. We met up with a Red Squad, but I don’t trust them one bit. Those commies are good for nothing and so is their leader. If they stay away from me, it’ll be just fine getting shot at.
Chapter 6: My Crime? Being a Jew
Auschwitz, 1943: I seem frantic writing this entry, but I do so because I know not how long I have to live. The Nazis imprisoned us in these camps where we are forced to work. Many who are lucky enough to be alive are dead on the inside. All that we can do is try to fend for ourselves. Today is the twins’ birthday and I have no idea on whether or not they are alive but I pray for them, my mother, and my father. All that I ask from God, is that we can survive through this ordeal and that we are no longer punished for our crimes. What are our crimes? What have we done? Why has the He chosen to punish us? We are punished because we are Jewish.
Chapter 7: Born Red, White, and Blue; Now Fully Red
I’m once again writing in my log, it is 1944. Why haven’t I been writing so much? Cause me and my friends were too busy killing Nazis. Alexey Kosygin and me have become great friends. He has taught me much about Communism. We’ve talked about what we were going to do after the war. Alex actually thinks he can become a Premier of the U.S.S.R. He told me that it was like a President. After learning about Communism, I realized that it wasn’t such a bad system; I mean, in my head, equality for everyone is great; there would no longer be competition and everyone can live in harmony. I don’t know how the guys at home will feel; I don’t even know if I should go back home. Russia sounds like such a great place, I feel that I should go there after we liberate some more of the Death Camps and the War is over.
Chapter 8: Freed by Reds
Auschwitz, January 27, 1945: Tragic day, for we are freed. We know that our families our dead and that Europe is aflame. Destruction is everywhere and my people are scared. I do not know why, possibly because we weren’t freed by Britain or France or even the Great America, but we were freed by Russia. They took us to hospitals and are helping us regain strength. I met one of the soldiers and he is a strange person. Though he fights with the Russians, he barely speaks their language. He claims he is from America and that he does not know if he could go back home after what he has learned here, but then again, can any of us go back home? Can any of our lives be restored to how it was before this war? The American and I became good friends; we talked for hours about what we had both gone through and how much we had suffered through this war. At least something good came out of this entire ordeal.
Chapter 9: A Traitor and A Hero
May 1945: I was feeling much better and Tony’s friendship with me had grown. We had become the best of friends and while going through Berlin, I felt like showing him my old home. We went through the streets and witnessed the destruction caused. Hitler had killed himself several weeks back and there were still small Nazi resistances. We arrived at him home, but what I had not known was that my home had been turned into a Nazi hideout. We walked into the house and I gave him a tour of what it used to be. When we got to the basement, there was a Nazi hiding there and waiting because he had heard us. He jumped Tony and they began to struggle. All of a sudden, the Nazi had pulled out a gun and fired. It hit Tony in the chest. I then snapped, everything that I had held in throughout the entire war erupted. I beat the Nazi to death and avenged my friend. He had killed Tony Smith, A War Hero, A Communist, and A Friend.
