instead of reformating does your computer have an option that you can system restore it?
Sounds like you have a spyware infection.
Download Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/) and HijackThis(http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html).
Run Adaware, remove all objects that it finds. If you're still having trouble, run HijackThis and post your log.

He might not have... there are trojans/spyware that exist for the sole purpose of dialing 'adult entertainment' sites to rack up huge charges.

if it doesnt show an error... might as well system restore. all its going to do is give you more problems in the future than it is right now.
just put all your stuff in document and setting and yourstuff would still be saved.
