Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> UMS Showcase -> My First Map In Years
Report, edit, etc...Posted by -_DLD_- on 2006-05-23 at 15:59:03
Okay, so this is the first map I've made in a very long time...at least 2 years. What I've tried to do numerous times is create a campaign that portrays the post-Broodwar events (this storyline is my own and is made completely independant of any other fan fiction). Now that I've finally got something else besides Staredit.exe (Starforge), and that I'm quite a bit older (almost 19 now), I've decided to take a final stab at this. I intend to finish this project, for once.

Anyway, again, this is my first map, so don't be overly hard on me. All that I'm trying to do is create a somewhat "classic" feel for the campaign, while having a fun and interesting storyline.

I'm posting this here (yes, I've tested the map a few times and the Triggers should work perfectly) so I know what I did right and what I did wrong before I create level 2.

You should polish up the walls. By that, I mean make it so that they are consistent. Except for the doodads you placed, there are just random sections of wall up and down the halls. It looks kind of odd with random wall patterns, computer terminals and doors. I think there are programs that let you choose the wall you want, but I just sat there and clicked the section repeatedly until I got the pattern I wanted. For an example, download my campaign (The Saga of Doodan) and look at mission 2 or mission 11. I was careful to make sure the walls looked nice.

Sorry for shamelessly plugging myself in your thread. But I'm glad you're making a campaign. There aren't enough of us out there.

Yeah, you're right. I'm just afraid to touch the terrain, since Starforge's terrain layer is whack...and I have a ton of illegal units in the map, so Staredit won't like it.

Apart from the walls (you're absolutely right...perhaps I got lazy ;x), what'd you think of the map itself?

Playability? Challenge? Terrain layout (wall details aside tongue.gif)?

Oh yeah, one main reason for starting this project is because I almost completed a project similar to this one many years ago...the first half of it sucked ass, as I didn't know how to spell or anything. And I used Badlands for Char once.

I'll see if I can toy around with the terrain in Starforge.

Good Job on the map, for you returning to map making anyway.

Good luck on any other maps that you are planning on making again!

SCMD: The solution to all your problems.

I strongly urge you to use SCMDraft. For it is a very, very nice editor. The only things SF is good for these days, is fancy effects. IE: Illegal Units

And, it's ease in aligning text.

Congratulations to your new map and coming back to Use-Map-Setting map-making.

true that. Don't even screw with sf at all... Screws maps entirely. Scmd is very advanced, and even has some of the special units that sf has. As for the map, i'm not really into campain maps, but it sounds like it needs to be a little bit longer...

Wow...a plethora of replies...I'm spoilt. ;D

7-7 and DA, thanks very much guys! happy.gif I could post some of my ancient maps to use as comparisons to my current work.

Noobar, SCMD? I don't have that. I was able to finally fix my fecking end sequence thanks to getting the CUWP editor.

Ares, I'll look for the link for SCMDraft. Stardraft and Emerald won't work on my PC. I'm using Windows XP S2.

Jello, really? Ouch. >_<; Anyway, this is the first map in the campaign, so it's not meant to be that long. I used most of the 128x128 area though, and it appears to be slightly non-linear (though the path to victory itself is linear). The way I placed the units and such actually give some tactical freedom and fun situations (such as correct Infested Terran use).

Oh yeah, I've updated the upload link with the end sequence perfected. I just need to work on balance issues...as I think there are too many Infesteds to rescue. I'll fix that now and re-upload the map again.

EDIT: Link is ready to roll. The map should be balanced now.

I've significantly updated the map. I've cleaned up the walls as Doodan advised, as well as enriched the story a lot so you can figure out what's going on.

Any and all feedback and constructive criticism is much appreciated.

I finally got around to playing this map and I must say well done. Walls are still a little messy, and there's some spelling errors, but what counts most is the gameplay and that's where you got it right. This isn't a map where you can just blindly send your units to fight, you must employ strategy. I had a lot of fun blowing stuff up with the infested terrans, and yelling "NO!" when the high templars came out of nowhere to zap my guys. At first, I thought it was a little too easy because a lot of the enemies were in corridors beneath you and you can safely shoot them from above, but the tables were turned in the second half as they have the upper ground. Good going on making the player drop his guard.

8/10
Can't wait for the following missions.

8.5/10, good job. Hopefully next time it won't have the boss being uninvincible while my duran is invincible... Cough* beta.gif

This is actually a good starcraft based map. One of the very best I've ever seen. Good job, but terrain needs a few touch ups. 8/10

Doodan - Sweet, thanks! happy.gif

Lunatic - Actually, incase you didn't notice, the little "boss fight" at the end is merely Duran firing one shot at Xianou and Xianou vanishing in a puff of smoke. He's a hallucination. You actually fight Xianou (with no invincibility and in the actual game) in Z2, which I've just completed the alpha version for. I'll release it once it enters the beta phase.

nobody - Wow, thanks very much! I'm flattered. blushing.gif
