Staredit Network -> Games -> How Did You Get Into Starcraft?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by mobomojo on 2004-07-25 at 02:56:46
For me, I came off a bad experience trying to play WCII for the first time. That was probably my first real PC gaming experience, next to the NES and GB emulation my bro got on the computer.

Anyway, my older bro came home with a copy of Starcraft. I was amazed by the sounds and graphics. I watched him play the Terran campaign all night and into the wee hours of the morning, 6am. Eventually, a couple days later, I got my chance to play. It was fun to play and listen to the different unit sounds.

I had picked up some quick tips just watching my bro play, so this experience this time around was more enjoyable. At some point a few months later, I found battlenet, got some friends to join me, and so on. Theres a future after that, but Im content with just saying how I got started.

My brother and mom came home from store, they had Starcraft, I wanted to play it, I had to wait for all day because my brother always hogs games when we get them, I got to play it the enxt day, then a year later I asked my mom if my computer could connect to Battle.net(I wanted to know just to be absolutely sure... blushing.gif )

I started back on my old laptop when I was looking at download.cnet.com for free games and demos. Starcraft's demo appeared to be one of the most popular files, so I went and downloaded it on the old 56k internal modem. I finished the demo campaign, which seemed pretty cool and set the scene for SC.
I heard about battle.net, so I hit multiplayer and was soon playing bbgh (badlands bgh) with the few people that played the Mac Shareware version. I made a few good friends and we had to play endless terran vs terran that usually became wraith-massing contests - which is how I developed my terrible melee skills.

About 1.5 years after getting the demo, I finally got my hands on the Battle Chest with Brood War. From there I've improved a little at melee, but I prefer the slower paced UMS where people don't constantly hound you for being noob or bad at micro or whatever.

It began with WC2. My dad bought it cause a friend of his told him it was gg.
I used to watch him hours playing and I never got bored. Until one day I said can I play and he let me.
Then he came home with Starcraft, we imediatly started playing Direct Connect after we both finished the Campaigns and it was fun. He always beat me I was about 9 years when Sc came out and I really didn't master Wc2 at all. Then came Brood War, We finished the campaing like a race against each other and then went to Direct Connect. We kept doing that until I finally kept consistently beating him, he then retired.
I kept playing single player until i went multiplayer on b.net.

Hehe well it was in like 2000 or something, all my friends played it. So first off I had a burned copy with a CD-key generated by a key-gen prog. But I wanted to go on b.net. Then I bought BroodWar, and finally, I borrowed the original SC with valid key from a friend, and never returned it. He lives right across from me, but he doesn't remember or care. smile.gif. Then I went on b.net all the time. And I used to think that going on only UMS was gay, but now that's all I do, rofl. If I played in a melee game, I'd probably die in like 15 minutes.

well, it was a normal day, and my brother came over with a game in his hand. it was called starcraft. he said he didn't like it and he gave it to me. so i first played single player mission and me vs comps. then i tried the editor out and started making maps (with out triggers tongue.gif) and later i got interested in the internet, so i started to play that. then i noticed people made there own maps and im like WTF?! so then i played around wit the editor i dunno how i started makin maps but i ended up doing it.
The End!!

I saw the battle chest in the store about 2 years ago for $9.99. I looked at it and said to my self "Myself, this is a pretty good game." So i bought it, played it, and started making maps.

I was introduced to the game when it first came out but didn't buy a copy until 4 years later huh.gif . A friend let me burrow his copy and I thought the game was awesome so I just went out and bought a copy so I could play on bnet. Best decision I've ever made. smile.gif

My StarCraft experience started in 2001. For you see me and my sister had to go to my our cousin's house for like two weeks... for reasons I'd rather not... express. =/ Anyway, one of my cousins, Tom, was addicted to StarCraft and I barely saw him away from his computer, I wondered what kept him playing. So then like a year passed and my dad had to go to Staples and get something for his office or whatever, as I usually did, I looked around at the computer games and there, in all it's glory was StarCraft for 9.99, so I got my dad to buy it for me. Then I too, became hopelessly addicted. At first I didn't even know there was a UMS mode, hell I didn't even know there was anything besides "Show All". I think one day I stumbled upon it, played some UMS map, and I became confused. I belive I was like "How was this made?"... then I think someone said "In the campaign editor.". So I made a bunch of maps, all crappy. Figured about triggers, still crappy. Found out about MORE triggers, decent. Found out about ALL the triggers, good. I made a aliens map and hosted it public and people liked it, one of them, Slayyer1000, really liked it and invited me back to the channel he and his friends resided in, aoe, on West (You see, I didn't even know about gateways). I remember, Slayyer taught me all the commands, like messaging, stuff like that. I wish aoe was still in it's glory days so I wouldn't have to hang out with all those losers in (U). wink.gif

I could have yapped alot more, but I... am lazy.

Hmm, I played at my friends house when it first came out, because he had a three computer LAN set up, so me, my brother and him would all play at the same time. Then we moved a couple years later and I bought it where I live now. That's about it.

I started playing Starcraft when I was around five years old (I'm 12 now). I saw my bro playing it and I'm like cool can i play? I bugged him constantly until he finally taught me a little bit. At first I sucked so bad I would play 1 computer and die within 5 minutes blushing.gif but I got better and better and eventually I went online. I joined multiple clans before I found one I was comforatable in but it died like 6 months later. I still own the name I had. Anyway I decided I was sick of my clans dying so about a year ago I started my own. It still isn't big but the members and me are content and thats good.

my brother got the game when it came out, but i never really played it that much, because i thought it was boring, but then i was at a friends house and he played SC, and then i started playing it regularly about 3-4 years ago.

sometime around 98-2000 i dunno, one of my friends told me about it. He also told me about a bunch of other games I like a lot now (Warcraft, Baldur's Gate). Eventually I got it and played it a lot.

Don't feel bad, when I first played whjen I was 7 or 8, I was thinking "Woah drones look like AWESOME combat units!"
I sent all my Drones on suicide missions against the computers Goliaths. I think I even managed a couple Zerglings though, and it was my first game and I learned everything on my(Damn you brother).

Got it for my 11th birthday. It was rated M at the time when ERSB smoked massive drugs. My parents bought me a 18+ game. I still have the orginal case. Yep.

I also have that original case. One of the few starcraft things that might go higher in value to collectors.

Not many "M" rated Starcraft are out there. I also got a "T" rated.

One of my friends got a copy. I saw it and I thinked that it sucks (yes cry.gif). Well, I don't know why but all my friends said that it sucks the first time, and then started playing and saying that it is the best game ever. I think that too. Its a strange game. The first time that you see it you don't really understand it (first time that I saw it I couldnt tell the diference between terran buildings, they all looked like the same tongue.gif) but then you start playing and enjoying it, and then you can't stop.

I started playing Diablo II LOD when i was very young. I thought it was a great game. Then a couple of my friends (neighbors) invited me to come to their "friend's" house. This "friend" was in his late 30's but he had a great LAN set up going. So I first started playing SC there. I was all into strategy. In fact, I still am. Diablo II was a fun game, but it doesn't compete with all the fun you get from commanding multiple troops into battle.

I am working on a map right now called Strategy and Tactics RPG. My hopes are to get further options available on strategic combat while having a unique story line at the same time. I don't just play SC because I'm bored. I play SC because I love the feeling of being victorious in a WAR.

I leave you with that and hope that you don't cease playing UMS games, but just come to realize how great Melee games are on their own. All I'm asking for is for some appreciation for the simpler side of SC.

(this doesn't exactly have a direct point related with the topic, but I see fit to submit it here as well...)

It all started when I played StarCraft 64 for the nintendo 64.. with my handy dandy GameShark giving me 9,999,999 minerals and vespene.. I was god like.. so then.. suddenly.. my korean friends call me and say "Sheki.." LmAo.. "Start playing SC with us!" they demanded "Not by the hairs of my chinny chin chin!" I replied.. suddenly winds that totaled 162 MPH started blowing upon my house and then I can hear a thunderous voice.. "Is that... God?" I though.. then I heard "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll nuke your house down!" it echoed through my head that I just had to start playing STARCRAFT or ELSE!

So there you have it.. wink.gif
